Thanks. How do these numbers stack up with previous UNC games ? Obviously not the Zion effect, but curious to compare ! Thanks for your effort.
Do you know what the viewership numbers are for Kansas, Kentucky for their games on ESPN/ESPN2? Wondering how they compare to our games.
Based on this article, the Duke-UNC ratings were low for that rivalry*, but still the most watched college basketball game of this season. Second on the list is Duke-Kansas. So we can conclude that Kansas and Kentucky's own games are not as heavily watched.
*The article lists games in February 2014 and February 2018 that were lower-rated, but both of those games were competing with the Winter Olympics.
Yeah, I think that this came in lower than they hoped, but it still beats everything else. Given that one team is down and a lot of the game was not close, viewers tuning in late did not do enough to bump up the entire ratings.
With the Raycom deal over, there was more flexibility this season and I think we will be able to read a lot into how everyone felt about the result when we get the schedule next year and find out if the first game is on a Saturday again or moved back to a weekday.
ESPN was much more powerful back then, and could afford to put Louisville-Kentucky and Duke-UNC on ESPN2 in order to increase customer demand and force cable providers to add ESPN2 to their lineups.
Nowadays ESPN comes from a weakened position, and it needs Duke-UNC on its main network more than it needs ACCN to go national.
