If you keep posting these reviews, Mrs. dd is going to become suspicious why I want to make a trip to Hawaii later this year or early next year...

Great review of a great beer. Fuse and I would've double your money back had you not like this one :p.
New Glarus stopped distributing outside Wisconsin a decade or more ago as they got tired of the "pay to play" scheme in Chicago.
Were you fortunate enough to obtain any of their other fruit beers like Raspberry Tart or Serendipity? Those are superb, too.
Fresh Catch-Narragansett Brewing Company (Rochester, NY *but* write or visit us at 461 Main Street Pawtucket, RI )
0318 1313:34 (so not really a "Fresh Catch" :p)
Last beer from my gifted birthday 6er last week. This was a pint can with a bright red lob-stah on the can, obviously an upstate NY variety )
Poured a golden-yellow with faint citrus aromas emanating through/from a foamy head. Writing on the can says "A refreshing golden ale dry hopped with Citra." I guess there are some traces of grapefruit and orange flavors present along with a light caramel sweetness and minimal bitterness. I'll guess 30 IBUs with the stated ABV at 4.2%. Not a stale beer but this likely was somewhat better a year ago. Meh. Happy to have tasted but certainly not search worthy.
Looks like a long, sordid corporate tale, with stops in Fort Wayne, IN and the Supreme Court, and an appearance by Curt Gowdy: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Narrag...rewing_Company
... not to mention Dr. Seuss and "Jaws" ...
Honolulu Beer Works Cocoweizen. Yep, a coconut Hefeweizen. Pours cloudy gold with a tinge of brown. The coconut flavors are pretty subtle, and do not overpower the banana and clove. A refreshing, quaffable beach beer.
About to board the long redeye flight home. 😔
You're welcome. The "Jaws" link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JsMqZ9uX4Sc
[QUOTE=accfanfrom1970;1169726]Advertising itself as a brewery and urban winery - back to Garden Grove.
2nd up - Death
Belgian Quadruple. Another part of their Trappist series. Aged 14 months in Cabernet Sauvignon barrels. Really brings out dark fruit flavors. 10% abv, 41 ibu, 1.086 OG. Aromas of dark fruit, fig, red wine, vanilla. Toasty malt flavor, taste the fig, red wine and oak. Listed as a two time award winner and I can see why. Just another exceptional and unique brew.
So, I drank the bottle of “Death” I purchased, at the visit above. Truly a unique and terrific beer. I looked at the bottle closely after finishing, you talk about limited - they made 100 bottles. And I finished one without even reading the fine print. So I bought two more, and will be aging them. Maybe a 2020 tailgating offering...man it’s hard to age good beers.
Its been at least 5 years since I have been to Allagash.
Wow.
Ymmm, beer, indeed.
Novare Res in Portland ME is a legit awesome beer bar.
Crazy global and local list.
Tripadvisor's top 10 beer experiences: https://www.tripadvisor.com/Traveler..._Mode.expanded
Let's see, I think mattman has been to the Czech republic and actually reviewed some of his tastings (). OPK was in Belgium recently and promised some beer reviews (har-rumph) and I've visited several breweries in Asheville but it has been a few years. Other than those, I got nothing. :o
Más Agave-Founders Brewing Company
I had my doubts about this one but they've all been dispelled.
It's an imperial lime gose brewed with agave and then aged in tequila barrels and is superb.
I sort of equally divided a 12 ounce bottle over two nights and was rewarded with a mildly hazy, amber pour with a small, off-white head that quickly disappeared. "Wasted Away Again in Margaritaville" comes to mind with the aromas of freshly squeezed lime juice, followed by dark caramel/sugar syrup and a gold tequila. It really tasted like a freshly made margarita with plenty of tangy/tart/sour lime flavors, to accompany the caramel/brown sugary sweetness, a modest amount of salt, wet wood and a good quality tequila (of which I know very few :o). I'll guess the IBUs about 10 and the ABV is 10% so a rather high octane gose and there aren't many of those I've tasted either. I guess it could be paired with almost any fresh seafood or some flip flops, a beach chair, an umbrella and a generous slathering of SPF 50. Three remain from the $18ish 4 pack for sharing/trading. Worth seeking out.
I believe it's davec's turn now...
Auto Correct (draft)-Ancillary* Fermentation
Who the heck are these guys? Here ya go:
"A pop-up fermentation experience, and a partnership between a bunch of Raleigh-Durham beer folks, centered on the idea that beer should be more experimental, more experiential, and a hell of a lot weirder. Each month, we host a pop-up taproom and launch a single beer in a different location throughout The Triangle, each centered around a theme, exploring everything from fancy felines to used goods to time itself."
What'd they brew this time?
Attachment 9568
And my, was it tasty.
Half pint pour that showed up raspberry soda purple-red with a very short-lived pink head. Berries to start, berries in-between and berries to finish. Mild sourness/tartness with some lemon-lime pucker, too. Untappd claims no IBUs but I'd guess 5-10 and the ABV was 6%. I'd happily grab a 4 pack of this if I saw it next week to share/trade.
Cease to Resist (draft)-New Anthem Beer Project
Almost local (from Wilmington, NC)!
This was a mango-infused Berliner Weisse so it appeared as a cloudy orange yellow pour (8 ounces) with a small, off-white head. Pretty subtle mango/tropical fruity scents followed by a mild tang/twang/pucker with more citrus and tropical juicy flavors. Untappd claims no IBUs *or* ABV but I'll call bovine shenanigans on both with my semi-trained palate sensing 5-10 IBUs and the ABV on the electronic beer board at Bottle Revolution yesterday (June 27, not the new movie :p) was 4.6%. Quite the pleasant sipper under a shaded umbrella on the patio last evening. I liked the Auto Correct a bit better.
Another beer for you to try and not admit on DBR Ymm Beer. Yep you guessed it:
Wicked Weed Funkatorium - Black Angel - 6.8% ABV - From Bottle - "Black Sour Ale aged on 1.5 pounds per gallon of tart Montgomery Cherries. Nearly 10 months of Bourbon Barrel Aging and artful blending reveal a dark, complex, and erapturing sour ale."
If you like Boubon Barrel aged, Tart Cherries, and a great sour, try this beer. OMG it's amazing. I rated it 4.5
Also last night I tried the Mother Earth Lemon-Blueberry Berlinerweisse recommended above by fuse I believe. I agree with everything he said.
Cheers!
Reviewed before, but this years version of Hardywood’s MaMaw’s Mean Cobbler is out. Belgian style ale with peaches and spices -mostly cinnamon. Tasty. 8.2%.
I just tried one from New Anthem too:
New Anthem Beer Project - Soggy Purple - Sour, Brliner Weisse - 5.4 % ABV, 1 IBU -
This beer pours red/purple like pomegranate juice. It's interesting - the bartenders at Jugg Heads really like it.
It's very heavy on the raspberry - actually a little too fruity for my taste. (My wife liked it which is highly unusual for any beer). It's tart, and the sour does cut the raspberry nicely at the end of the taste. I'll rate it 3.75
If you really like raspberry, sour, and Berliner Weisse style it's definitely worth a try.
But the Black Angel is definitely on a whole different level - pretty incredible.
My stepdad just got back from a beer run in Richmond, and he was super excited about it. He said the breweries there are much better than anything in NC, including Asheville.
His favorite was the Veil Brewing Company -
He rated one of their Beers a 5, and he's a tough rater. We Ded Mon - IPA Triple
Some others - Hot Chocolate & Ancho Chili Hornswoggler - 4.0
Dirt Nap - DIPA - 4.5
PRBLMS - Triple IPA - 4.5
Keepz Building V2.0 IPA - 4.25
White White Ferrari Ferrari - IPA - 4.5
Never Gonnagetit - Sour Fruited Gose - 4.0
all from Veil
He also tried Stone Brewing, Ardent, Lickinghole Creek Craft, and Heist.
Anyway, it sounds like I really do need to make a beer run to Richmond and Veil. Gotta time it right though. He said people were waiting in line for 90 minutes to buy beer, and he waited 20 minutes to get in when they opened the store. Must be good and the word is out.

Glad he enjoyed the trip and Veil is typically rated #1 or #2 in town. #1 for ipa’s. They also can or bottle more varieties than most, but not in volume. So people stock up, especially on release day.
Lickinghole Creek Tap room downtown shockoe bottom, downtown Richmond. Three Chopt Tripel, Belgian tripel. 9.3% abv, 39 ibu’s. Clean, crisp, bit of hops on the finish. Nice beer, drinkable but probably dangerous at 9.3%.
Supreme Leader, imperial stout BBA with a mole added for spice. Nice kick. Doesn’t have the cinnamon of the hardywood Caliente, but a really nice chocolate type stout with a kick. 13.5%, 60 ibu’s.
Two excellent beers at a tap house I will revisit soon.
[QUOTE=accfanfrom1970;1171853]I assume you mean the top 2 are Ardent and the Veil?
Who are your top 5 and in what order? Trying to read different reviews online I'm seeing lots of different opinions.
I'll get up there one day, and excited Devildeac's landing is imminent.
[QUOTE=richardjackson199;1171903]Formulating plan of attack and discussion with Quartermaster (perhaps my Supreme Commander would be a better choice of words/rank :o) as I post. (I've been reading waaaay too much Revolutionary and Civil War books recently. :o
I'm interested to see what you think of the New Anthem Soggy Purple.
I would recommend tasting a small sample before you buy it. I'm not completely sure what to think about it. I could see somebody loving it or hating it. I was more in-between. I don't think it was a bad beer. Definitely interesting, and not subtle. But I don't think they got it quite right. Bottom line I think it was too heavy on the raspberry, too fruity on the initial taste. But it finishes with a nice, very gentle sour and the raspberry is more tart than sweet. I'll stick to 3.75 rating. It's not a beer I'd tell you to run out and buy (like I would Burial's Sixth Passing or Wicked Weed's Black Angel).
I don't think saying it tastes like a really good wine cooler is right, but not too far off either. It definitely has a nice Berlinerweisse finish. And purple as hell. Very nice, tasty aromatic head on the pour too.
Have a great week!

I’m partial to three - Hardywood, Ardent and Veil. Hardywood has the bourbon barrel Cru and their gingerbread stout line. Ardent has their Honey Ginger and a great dopplebock, both of which if you can get their BBA version are great. Veil has a whole lineup of ipas and their hornswoggler stout variants. I also highly recommend Garden Grove in Carytown, but they don’t can or distribute. Lickinghole Creek would be my 5th. They have some high octane BBA beers, and they’re not cheap. But some really interesting and unusual beers.
[QUOTE=devildeac;1171923][QUOTE=accfanfrom1970;1171910]Don't worry, fortunately for you, there are finite limits on my stomach volume, alcohol tolerance, and bank account beer budget.
I'll happily accept and appreciate whatever small, surprise sampler pack can be assembled based on availability.
And I'm good for it. I assume you accept payment in cash, check, credit, consult fee IOUs, and/or pie, right? :p

From 6/27:
KBS-Founders Brewing Company
This was only a 2 ounce taster but always worth a BTTT post to remind folks how good this is. A pint would have been $12. I'm still happy with the two 12 ounce bottles in "storage" obtained from Ohio for about $6 each.
Pinehurst Brewing Company Hawaiian Delight. If you can’t actually be in Hawai’i (still), this could be the next best thing. A Berliner Weisse, it was just what the doctor ordered after walking No.4 today (as a practice round for the boy). Bright gold. Nice and tart. Citrus flavors, but they weren’t overdone. 3.9% ABV. Mega-refreshing. Another hit from PBC.
I am shocked that fuse has not yet provided us with this July 4 beer list:
https://vinepair.com/wine-blog/the-1...icial-holiday/
7th Sun Round Corners Lager
Pretty much a beer.
Went well (as intended) with shisito peppers.
Maine was very, very kind to the beer fridge.
Allagash and the Bier Cellar should have been very happy to see us.
Deschutes Fresh Squeezed IPA
Smells faintly of pine.
Good mouthfeel, orange pith bitterness and flavour.
A good beer for sure.
More beers for your July 4th consideration. Fifteen to be exact:
https://www.mensjournal.com/food-dri...a-brewing-bfd/
Here's a shorter list of July 4 brews:

Some are repeated from prior lists :o.
YABMUARBC
(Yet Another beer meet up at RBC)
First up...
Peach Bell Tower Berliner Weisse
Smells and tastes mildly of tart peach.
Evokes nice memories of DFH Festina Peche.
RBC Current Kolsch
As a sidebar, I really enjoy brightly coloured or beers of unusual hue.
(Provided, of course, that the beer is good.)
Looks like cloudy grape juice.
A bit of an odd flavour, almost raisin-y (which I guess could make sense).
Probably won’t revisit this one, not my favorite collection of flavours.
Bravo to RBC to choosing a fairly bland palate of kolsch to allow the currant to shine through, for better or for worse.
RBC Sunswept Lemon Saison
I think the currant taster has wrecked my palate a bit.
I always enjoy this beer at RBC.
It’s pretty mild/flat/just ok today.
Won’t keep me from ordering in the future.
RBC Grape and Funk
No clear indication if this is new, or a rebrand of Grape & Grain.
There are Grape and Grain bottles in the cooler, so I am sticking with new and different.
Clear amber pour, no head, smells “wine-y”.
Labeled a 2017 barrel aged brett saison.
Pretty mild flavours for a big beer.
Low carbonation.
Alcohol kick on the finish with some heat.
Allagash Darling Ruby
Farmhouse style ale with grapefruit zest
Has the sharp (acrid? But not in an unpleasant way) smell of freshly cut grapefruit.
Several shades darker than Allagash White, with a taste profile similar to Allagash White with a bitter grapefruit finish.
A delightful drop on a hot July day.
Cheers! 🍻
Always an enjoyable and costly (;)) meet-up with fuse, no matter where it might be. This time it involved 26 beers of the brewery only/limited availability/Maine only variety from his recent beer-cation. A mouth-watering cornucopia of local delights! Thanks!
Yea, I really can't "complain" about the costs after the devildeac's 2016 Midwest Duke football, err, beer odyssey after which we spent $650ish on beer and you graciously/happily/enthusiastically split the $$ with me:D.
I'm not sure who's going to enjoy the beers more, you by reading (and drinking the same ones) or me by sipping all of them over the next several weeks. ;)
Tampa Bay Brewing Company Double Coast Lager
Not a bad beer by any stretch.
Meh beer?
Tasty for a traditional lager.
Continuing on in the Raleigh Brewing Company theme from a bit earlier today, we have:
Grape and Funk 2017-RBC
This is Grape and Grain, their 2016 chardonnay barrel-aged imperial saison that was incarcerated for yet another year in red wine barrels and forced to co-exist with some Brettanomyces yeast characters. I don't think I ever tasted Grape and Grain but I'm pretty sure fuse reviewed it here at some point.
This half pint pour ($4) was a reddish-purple hue with very little head. Nose was quite vinous and tastes were berries, apples, pears, red wine vinegar and some (Uptown) funk/wet straw. I'll guess IBUs about 10-tart/sour but not bitter. ABV was 8.8%, a bit lower than expected as the Grape and Grain is listed at 9% on the bombers I bought today ($9 including tax; I swear it was $15-20 when I saw it in stores 2-3 years ago). I liked this one a lot.
From 5/6/19:
Tell me, dd, did it take you too long to re-visit this fine ale?
Damn Yes, Ma'am!
Worth a re-post/re-quote. I'd have had a pint but it was too stinking hot to have another half pint of this high gravity ale and expect to make it home late this afternoon:o.
Beers are better with friends, so a tip of the tulip to fuse for the suggestion to meet here again, enjoy some fine RBC products and make an exchange of some fine Maine beers for some US currency.
Prim Looking Stargazer-Hardywood Park Craft Brewery
Singing accfanfrom1970's praises again with a loud shout as he was kind enough to include this 750 ml bottle as one of my possible choices for a trader for the large format $10 Allagash Curieux I delivered to a tailgate last fall. Thanks!
Gin barrel-aged mixed culture saison
I had to do a bit of research about gin barrel-aging and found our there aren't many GBA beers because there apparently aren't many gin barrels readily available as gin is generally not barrel aged. I can recall one other GBA beer I've had before and that was sharing a crowler of Haute Raute, a tripel from New Holland Brewing, with the nearly famous budwom in the fall of 2016 after we returned from our Midwest beer odyssey, err, Duke football trip.
I divided Prim Looking Stargazer over the last 2 nights, each time sipping from a small Allagash tulip, no doubt anticipating/celebrating fuse's delivery of his Maine beer haul yesterday afternoon. Pour was a champagne color with a small, fizzy head that laced the glass marvelously each night. Nose of gin/juniper with fairly strong gin tastes along with wet straw, sour/tart apples, underripe pears and a pinch of black pepper. I'm guessing the "mixed culture" description means it was fermented with yeast and/or bacteria characters named Brettanomyces, Pediococcus and Lactobacillus, but, I have no suspect list from the brewery, nor can I find one on-line. I'll guess 20 IBUs and the ABV is "only" 5% but this tastes/drinks/feels like an 8-9% ale.
This was a highly unusual creation that I greatly enjoyed sampling and publicly thank accfanfrom1970 again who has been patiently inquiring when I'd sample and review this.
Another 4th of July beer list featuring a couple Maine beers:

Hitchiking on your post, this list was found at the end of the article you linked:
https://gearpatrol.com/2019/05/10/mo...es-in-america/
How many of these breweries have y'all heard of, let alone sampled one of their products?
We'll be visiting The Veil Brewing Company this Saturday and they have brews listed (drafts? bottles/cans? both?) from Other Half, Trillium, Tree House and Monkish in case anyone is interested.
First world beer problems- when you have so much new to you beer in the fridge that you don’t know where to start. 😳🙄
7th Sun Sakura Obscura
Cherry Pomegranate Berliner Weisse
Pours a beautiful cranberry color.
Frothy head, thick but fleeting.
Smells like tart cherries.
Might not give New Glarus a run for its money on Belgian Red, still right up there among the best fruit beers I’ve had.
Tart gives way to some bubbly effervescence followed by a sweet and still puckering cherry finish. Really, really nice.
Cheers all! 🍻
Orono collaboration with Novare Res
Gonzo Gose
Persian Lime and Blueberry with Himalayan Pink Salt
5.2% ABV
Pours a beautiful pink trending toward peach hue.
16 oz can split two ways.
First pour had a decent brief head, the other, none.
Bottoms of can :
High and Tight
Brewed 5/28/19
Nose is lime and simple syrup.
Salty finish.
Blueberries may add the colour but not much flavour.
This is a lime and salt dominated beer.
Does not call to mind margarita flavours (perhaps due to lack of tequila 🤣 ).
I’m not familiar with Orono, since we had beers at Novare Res, this seemed like a fun purchase.
A tasty beer for a hot summer day.
Cheers! 🍻
As a not big liquor or cocktail drinker, I have zero reference to what an actual Moscow Mule should taste like.
With that out of the way, the nose is bitter lime.
This is a very smooth ginger beer with a flash of lime on a big boozy finish.
Many thanks devildeac for setting aside a Moscow Mule for me. I am enjoying the kick!
Cheers! 🍻
Haw River Short Crust
Apple Oatmeal IPA
Smells of apple, cinnamon, and vanilla.
Tastes like a citrus fruity hoppy apple pie, in a VERY good way.
Again, a tip of the cap to devildeac! 🍻
When there is no dessert in the house and one doesn't feel like driving to the store/local ice cream shoppe because it's just too damn hot outside, liquid dessert will have to suffice/satisfy.
Attachment 9585
Last one from the beer fridge in the devildeac abode.
:( Attachment 9586
That looks better than seven-layer chocolate cake, Dr. D!
Raspberry Tart Shandy
One part Simply Lemonade, one part Raspberry Tart, mix, gulp (after an hour walk at 90 degrees), enjoy.
I did share about 4 ounces of the Raspberry Tart with Mrs. dd before my Shandy, saving the last 4 ounces of Raspberry Tart for myself after the Shandy.
Liquid Riot Tropical Storm
Sour Wheat with loads of tropical fruit
Another new to me Maine beer, courtesy of a recommendation at the Bier Cellar.
Super hazy, looks like watered down orange juice.
Smells like pineapple, mangoes, oranges, and maybe lime.
Tart, and fruity.
Another Del Monte fruit cup in a glass kind of beer.
Heavy on the pineapple.
A nice way to start of celebrating the 4th.
Cheers! 🍻
Battery Street Brewing Endless Ride
Blackberry Mandarin Orange Kettle Sour
3.9% ABV
Pours the colour of a blackberry smoothie- deep purple ruby red, completely opaque.
Thick pink head does not last.
Nose is absolutely indeterminate.
Thanks, allergies and clogged sinuses.
Loads and loads of blackberry to start, with a finishing mandarin orange kick.
You could likely pass this off as a very well done sour sangria.
I guess the Tropical Storm (wheat) could pass for white, and certainly this beer is red. Pretty sure all the blueberry beers in the fridge (save perhaps the bottle of Allagash Pick Your Own) are gone. Guess I should have planned better to do a red, white, and blue beer tasting.
Cheers! 🍻
Allagash Tiny House
A 3.4% ABV version of Allagash’s house beer.
Can description says melon, grapefruit, and malt.
Pours lemon yellow.
A brilliant grapefruit nose.
As much as I enjoy high ABV beer, I enjoy well done low ABV beer even better.
Tiny House would be an excellent all day sipper.
Really well constructed, fantastic mouthfeel.
Finishes a little sharply with grapefruit.
The power of suggestion being everything, there is a faint cantaloupe flavour at the start, followed by an bubbly bitterness ahead of the grapefruit finish.
I sure hope Allagash expands plans to bring can distribution to NC.
Cheers! 🍻
Fuse has turned into a one man wrecking crew today with new beer reports. I'll resume tasting/reporting again tomorrow once I'm off call duties.
Well you would expect the fuse to get lit on July 4.
I tried Grove by Brewery Bhavana - 8% ABV - 58 IBU - DIPA:
Of course, this is a good beer. It has a very nice, subtle mixture of grapefruit, peach, orange, papaya, and mango taste. It's citrusy, but for me it was too bitter and the bitterness didn't fade as much as I'd prefer. I'll rate it 4.0 and can't wait to try more beers from this brewery.
Happy Fourth!
Allagash River Trip
session Belgian style ale
Maybe the biggest beer of the day so far at 4.8% ABV.
Can says Belgian style table beer featuring melon, citrus, and stone fruit notes.
If we didn’t have such good beer locally, I might have to find a gig closer to Allagash.
Another beautiful lemon gold pour and dense head.
Nose is lemon and straw.
Another super mild stunner.
Surprisingly balanced and yet a challenging amount of bitterness.
Definitely melon on the finish, with a twist of lemon.
There is a biscuity dryness as a top note offsetting the hops.
I may like Tiny House better, not by any meaningful margin.
A grand day for trying new beer so far.
I’m in Spokane for the evening and am going to sink a pint of Black Butte porter. Happy 4th! TT
I'm pretty sure someone upthread has mentioned this already (forgive me for not giving personal/proper credit) but the Pack now has a new beer brewed just for them, Old Tuffy:
https://www.newsobserver.com/living/...232245637.html
Saw something yesterday, I think from Joe Ovies, crediting Wake with being the first university in the area to serve beer. UNC and State will be serving to the public this upcoming year.
Duke remains a holdout where, whether Duke football club suites/press box or basketball Champions Club, you’ve got to be on the order of a $100k/year donor to enjoy beer, wine, or booze at a game. 🤬
Definitive Brewing Company
Peels & Pits
IPA w/ lactose, tangerines and peaches
7.5% ABV
Super cloudy orange juice like pour.
Smells like orange juice, and Del Monte canned peaches in syrup.
Surprisingly hoppy, although the bitterness is mild and attenuated by the fruit.
If you threw hops in orange juice, you might have an approximation of Peels and Pits. There is some peach, maybe coming through as a bit of sweetness and density of mouthfeel.
All the sugar hides how big this beer is; no real burn other than a bit of vodka booziness on the finish.
Another fine find from Maine.
Cheers! 🍻
Banded Brewing
Charms & Hexes Sour Ale with Passion fruit & guava
5.2% ABV
Pours a pale gold, no head.
As more brewers use passionfruit, I am learning I love how passionfruit smells.
The nose is dense, sweet passionfruit with something else.
Maybe guava but I’m not certain how guava smells.
Drinks like a tart passionfruit soda.
Really fruity and a great drop for a hot day.
Cheers! 🍻
I'll tell you a great summer Berliner Weisse to try this weekend. I'm sure this was reviewed above so I'll second:
Double Berry Milkshake Berliner Weisse - New Sarum (Salisbury) - 4 % ABV - 8 IBU - This one is great! From the can - "Brewed with a massive amount of blueberries and blackberries, in combination with lactose and American hops, this tart creation is a ...distinctly smooth and perfectly blended, refreshingly crsip, clean tart finish"
Yes it's a whole lotta berry flavor. But this is perfectly blended and the gentle sour berliner weisse finish is one of the best I've tried. It's rich and bold in blackberry and blueberry for sure. But I like blueberries and blackberries. And I really like this beer on a hot July day. I'll rate it 4.5. It's simple, not overly complex. Untapped has it lower at 3.89. But I think they got it just right and would highly recommend a try if you're not opposed to berries. They have it at Stella
I had dinner at River Birch and they had Burial Surf Wax IPA on draft. What else can I say? Loved it. Rate it at least 4.25. 6.8 % ABV. 70 IBU. Not too bitter. Piney in a great way. Gentle and complex like Burial always is. Mosaic. Citra. Centennial. Columbus. Lots of barley. Touch of wheat.
I got lots more at Stella, so more to come... Have a great weekend! Especially Devildeac on your Richmond run.
A milkshake Berliner Weisse :eek:. I'm easily able to say I've never tasted that style, nor have I even imagined that style. Sounds delicious.
Good start to the weekend so far. A new Allagash beer, an evening out with the lovely Mrs. dd and now another brand new Maine brew.
Darling Ruby-Allagash Brewing Company
The first of 26 () new brews from Maine from fuse. Well, there are actually some duplicates there but I will perform magic in a couple weeks and turn six of them into new Ohio beers ;).
Pour from a 12 ounce bottle into a small Allagash tulip (2 servings after dinner) appeared a light, yellow-gold with a thin fizzy head. I caught hints of apples on the nose but it's almost all grapefruit zest. The Allagash White reference is a good one with hints of orange on the palate, but again, more grapefruity and zesty. I'll guess IBUs about 20 and the ABV was 4.5%. A very pleasant start to a Friday evening. This might be the only beer in the delivery that is available in this area.
The first of many thanks to fuse for sharing his Maine beer haul!
Off to Richmond in the AM with some art, local craft ales, maybe some baseball and a meet-up hopefully with accfanfrom1970 in the Scott's Addition area...
WTH?!?! No posts since last PM?!?!
Tessellation-Lone Pine Brewing Company
Second of a Maine series from fuse. Thanks!!
Pint can of this single hop (Mosaic) IIPA poured last PM with vigor into a pint glass (two 8 ounce servings) last PM.
Mildly hazy, golden-yellow with a creamy/foamy off-white head. Juicy scents of pineapple, grapefruit and orange with tastes of the same with strawberry, guava and melons. I'll guess about 60 IBUs and the ABV was 8.1%. High quality stuff here in a very crowded field.
Note to richardjackson199 and fuse:
Your Veil Brewing order will be in Raleigh sometime tomorrow afternoon. Send lawyers, guns and money :o.
We'll get 6 pint cans each of the following:
Dusty Roadz
New Son
Eager to Bleed
HMU
Never Never Found Found
Yellow Ferrari
Damage: $29 each.
I tasted Eager to Bleed and Never Never and they're both unusual but excellent.
We'll make private arrangements;).
Accfanfrom1970 sends hearty and hoppy greetings to all Ymm, Beer readers and posters:D.
Sorry I never made it to any other breweries-too damn hot and late.
Falcon Smash (draft)-Triple Cross Brewing
We're local!
Twelve ounce pour with lunch of their "flagship" IPA. Appearance was hazy yellow with a small, creamy head. Lots of pineapple and grapefruit aromas with some orange, guava, strawberry and melon on the tastebuds. No fruits added and despite its American IPA claim, it tasted more like a NEIPA/West Coast IPA hybrid with some dankness from the Falconer's Flight dry hop brewing and "rotating hop varietals" in the tun, too. I'll guess IBUs about 60 with the stated ABV at 7%. Bartender really liked this brewery and I'd certainly have some of their other brews when visiting again.
From 10/21/18;
From yesterday at The Diamond watching the Flying Squirrels hack up an acorn against the Reading Fightin' Phils:
Peach Tripel (draft)-Hardywood park Craft Brewery
Yep, still local sipping!
Both versions were excellent and not sure which one I liked better, the bottled one with tailgate friends or the draft variety with Mrs. dd.
(Wait, I *think* I know the proper answer here...:o)
Pretty similar impressions except the draft was a bit creamier, for lack of a better word, with a bit more foam to the head. Maybe a bit more peachy as it warmed up at the ballpark. Pretty impressive to find Hardywood with their own booth and have more than an IPA and pilsner on draft. This was $8 for the pint and would have been $13 for a 32 ounce serving, which I would have ordered if my wife was more of a beer drinker. She took one sip and politely declined any more with her usual, "Tastes too much like beer." ("But, I sure like those New Glarus fruit beers that we ran out of last week!" :o)
From 1/7/18:
From tonight:
Hatchet-Booneshine Brewing
Stamped on bottom of can:
Brewed on
10/08/2018
Stolen from our older daughter a couple weeks ago for dog-sitting fees :o
Pretty similar impressions to above but betterer fresherer.
There was a small amount of fine sediment at the end of the pour but not unpleasant. Not stale but a bit "old." Made a nice pairing with a 1/4 rack of ribs, some homemade Asian slaw and half of a fresh NC tomato.
Never Never Found Found (draft)-The Veil Brewing Company
Still local! (from last PM :o)
Two ounce sample before purchase of a 4 pack of cans.
"Gose with double red papaya and double mango."
Pour was an orange-tinged pineapple-yellow with a small head. A juicy gose () with the above aromas and flavors and a pinch of salt. I'll guess IBUs about 10 and the ABV is listed at 5.1%.
The recipients of the above will have to provide more info after tasting their own pint can...
;)
Eager to Bleed (draft)-The Veil Brewing Company in collaboration with Angry Chair Brewing (about which I know nothing-yet)
Another local two ounce taster, this one was their first imperial Berliner Weisse.
"... brewed with blood orange, raspberry and sweet cherry"
Appearance was orange-pink with a sweet and tart/sour nose. Berries and orange scents and flavors caress the senses with a bit of pucker along with some lemon/lime (not added). I'll guess IBUs of 10 and the ABV is 8%, rather high for the style but not quite in the same zip code as Southern Pines' Moscow Mule at 12%.
This is another that will have to be seen and tasted by the recipients fingered upthread. :o
There is quite a selection of breweries in the Scott's Addition area of Richmond with what felt like a brewery every couple blocks. Was fortunate enough to visit one of these and sample beers from two others on Saturday:
https://www.hopculture.com/best-craf...mond-virginia/
Really surprised Ardent is not listed.

Yeah, I would have rated Ardent ahead of Vasen, Triple Crossing and Answer.
From Garden Grove Brewing and Urban Winery in Richmond and used to describe their Career Suicide IPA:
"This IPA is part of that tradition even though the rule in Richmond is… Don’t make an IPA that doesn’t taste like fruit juice."
Just returned back to the office after our week in Northern WI (over 8 days, only having two people say some iteration of "F9fck Duke" in the presence of my myriad of Blue Devil gear is somewhat of a win). Checking in with my Official Brew Devil ReportTM:
Friday, 6/28
Founders Brewery on the way up through MI. Would have loved for it to have been just me and the wife, as the kids were antsy from the car ride and the lunch rush left the service level below acceptable levels. One and done, so had to make the one a good one... 12 Feet Under- 14.3% ABV Double BA (?) Triple(?!) IPA - Founders Brewing Co. - A blend of three of their IPAs, twice barrel aged and then dry hopped. Very, very good, very sweet and oaky without being unbearable hoppy.
Before pulling out of Grand Rapids, we stopped at The Knickerbocker (New Holland's GR location) and picked up their newly released Maple Oak and Orange Chocolate variants. Another cool location I wish we had more time to enjoy.
After pulling into Mackinaw City for the evening, we walked across the street for dinner to Rusted Spoke Brewing Co. Service was remarkably better than Founders, despite having a packed house as well. So much better, than instead of getting to try a few different beers on the menu, our server instead brought me, unrequested, two refills of their Flat Tire Baltic Porter - 5.4% ABV which was a nice smooth, smokey porter. Knowing I only had time for one more, I swung for the fences and went as heavy as I could; Daddy Boy's Rootbeer - 13.8% ABV Imperial Stout, which if I was a terrible father I might have allowed the kids to take a sip... It was that rootbeer-y. Maybe next time ;)
Saturday, 6/29
Finally rolled into town and stocked up at the local grocery store... SERIOUSLY, if you ever find yourself in Mercer, WI, stop in at Snow's Family Market and check out their beer selection that covers 1/3 of their store. Mark Snow has a Three Floyds mind in a Deliverance location. While the new purchases were chilling in the cabin's fridge, I drank copious amounts of Spotted Cow that were previously left in there.
Sunday, 6/30
Cracked a Dragon's Milk Reserve: Orange Chocolate - 11% ABV Stout - New Holland while fishing. Bugs were bad, but the amount of orange was juuuust right. Followed up with a Serendipity - 4% ABV Fruit Beer - New Glarus... Apples, Cherries, Cranberries... Oh My! At such a low ABV, I contemplated hydrating myself with this nectar of the gods the rest of the trip, but I decided to share the other 5 bottles instead.
Monday, 7/1
Group went into town for lunch, so I snagged the only two beers on the menu I hadn't consumed previously: Todd - The Axe Man (Surly Release) - 7.2% ABV IPA - Surly Brewing/Amager Bryghus Collaboration & Scream IIPA - 9% ABV Imperial IPA
Tuesday, 7/2
During the USA v. England match I drank 6 or 7 Busch Lights with the locals to fit in... then drank a bomber of each after the kids went to bed to wash out the taste: Wisconsin Belgian Red and Raspberry Tart - 4% ABV Fruit Beers, both New Glarus
Wednesday, 7/3
Nitro S'Mores - 10% ABV Imperial Stout - Southern Tier Brewing Co - Made a fire for the family, drank this chocolate, graham cracker and vanilla nitro while they made real S'Mores
Thursday, 7/4
Drank a twelve pack of #MERICA! - 5% ABV Lager - Surly Brewing Company and then lit off fireworks on the lake like a responsible adult.
Friday, 7/5
Breakfast - BA Imperial Pajamas - 13.5% BA Oatmeal Stout - Begyle Brewing
Lunch - King Sue - 7.8% Double IPA - Toppling Goliath
Dinner - Blithering Idiot - 11.1% Barleywine - Weyerbacher Brewing Company
Dessert - Creme Brulee - 10% ABV Imperial Double Milk Stout - Southern Tier Brewing Co
Any of you who have kids and have vacationed with in-laws know that I needed Every. Single. One. of these drinks.
Also, New Glarus should use this picture for an ad... I accept cases of beer as payment
Attachment 9591
Another classic report. Thanks!
Some fabulous beers listed above. Would you take me on your next family vacation? I'd promise to keep my eructation, flatulence and swearing to a minimum and would help you look after the kids without asking for *too* many extra beers as compensation or plying them with extra candies, cakes, cookies and/or adult beverages.:o
A NEIPA from Southern Range Brewing Company in Monroe, NC:

Made me chuckle.
Beer name of the day?
Founders Brewery on the way up through MI. Would have loved for it to have been just me and the wife, as the kids were antsy from the car ride and the lunch rush left the service level below acceptable levels. One and done, so had to make the one a good one...
Fantastic report, made me thirsty and jealous reading it. But your first stop reminded me to check the fridge and yes I had a Founders bottle. Purchased 2018 - Founders Curmudgeon’s Better Half, old ale brewed with molasses and aged in maple syrup bourbon barrels. 12.7% abv. Poured a dark orange, I was expecting darker with the molasses, light foam. Get the bourbon up front, nice spice to the ale, hint of molasses on the finish. It is delicious. Would definitely buy several if I could find it. It is up there with the BBA honey ginger and the bourbon barrel cru, excellent.
Here's the remainder of their barrel-aged series for 2019:
https://foundersbrewing.com/beer/barrel-aged-series/
Compass Rose Scott’s (?) Scottish Export Ale
Low ABV, 5.5%.
Pretty thin and light, not memorable for my first(?) Compass Rose.
Hi Wire Rose Ale
Looked like Rose wine in the glass.
Subtly fruity.
Really tasty and worth picking up if you see it.

We Ded Mon (draft)-The Veil Brewing Company
Locally consumed Saturday evening.
An IIIPA-see prior post
Twelve ounce pour into a Teku glass with a cloudy, yellow-orange hue and a foamy, meringue-like head. Amazingly fruity nose with pineapple, grapefruit, orange, mango and papaya and a thick, almost puree-like mouthfeel bursting with more juiciness, rind-y/pulpy bitterness and a slight alcohol burn. I'll guess IBUs about 70 ("hopped entirely with massive amounts of Citra") based on the style, maybe 80-90 even that balance well with the dangerous 11% ABV. Well worth the $7 cost. If they had 4 packs of this, one would have been included in the assorted case I brought home to share/trade and I'd have likely left out the pale ale which I'm going to guess will still be very good.
Curmudgeon is one of my favorite Founders Beer (only behind Lizard of Koz, CBS & KBS)
When you have a two year old that wakes up 3 times a night, sometimes breakfast is just a continuation of the previous night's drinking... I'd say there was a 36 hour period that began at the 4th of July parade where I held a steady buzz. I was like a chemist with my water, Gatorade and Vitamin B intake, and I feel like the mere mortals around me at the time didn't fully appreciate my greatness. ;)
They need to fix their heading; still shows up as their 2018 Series, even when they clearly mean 2019. Mas Agave was a really really great sour gose and has been my beer buddy's wife's go to all summer for our parties.
Thinking back to the Imperial IPA I had from New Glarus last week (which I now understand is just a fancy name for a double IPA) and then looking at the list of current IIIPA's out there... I guess the next evolution would have to be creating a IIIIPA? Or would it be a IVPA? An Imperial Triple IPA? Might have to sneak into the brewmaster's quarters at 3F and pitch the idea to somehow take their Permanent Funeral blend and age it again in a used Dark Lord Malört barrel to take the strength and bitterness to an uncharted plateau?
Oxbow Brewing Cherry Jackpot
Barrel Aged Farmhouse ale with cherry juice
Bottled 12/2018
Production time : 14 months
Enjoy within five years
7.5% ABV
Collaboration with Oxbow, Mikkeller, Stillwater Artisanal, and Omnipollo.
Pours like pink grapefruit juice, or like a very pale rose wine.
Very sour vinegar nose.
This is a mouth puckering sour beer up front and finishes with a cherry fruitiness and some barrel aged dryness. A liquid super sour cherry sour patch kid.
When I talked to a few Maine locals independently, it was funny to hear a consistent opinion on Oxbow. Apparently Oxbow is unorthodox and no one knows what to think about their beers because they don’t conform to even general farmhouse ale style expectations.
For me, beer styles are useful guidelines, and don’t generally affect my enjoyment of a beer. I recalled Oxbow was brewing great beer several years ago.
Revisiting Oxbow, I still think they are brewing great beer.
They are on the pricey side, $14-17 for a 500ml bottle.
I only hope their eccentricity is not their downfall.
I’m in Friday Harbor, WA, and I found a bottle of Abyss! I shall crack it this evening with the salmon chowder from yesterday’s catch. TT
Two days ago I was in Victoria, B.C. visiting a friend who is part owner of Twa Dogs Brewery. My favorite Scottish ale he brews is a barrel-aged, smokey-flavored ale named Parting Kiss. The brewery is also a scotch whiskey distillery. Caught a bit of a buzz tasting the beers and whiskey!
From 7/6/19:
From last PM, its cute, baby sister:
Tiny Tess-Lone Pine Brewing Company
0smudge/09/2019 on bottom of can
Third Maine beer with another "well done and thank you" to fuse!
Pint can of this single hop (Mosaic) IPA poured in a similar fashion to above.
This was a pale, pineapple-yellow with more of a fizzy head. Think "Tropicana tropical juice blend light" with less strawberry, guava and melons from the aromatic and palate perspectives. The ABV was 4.05% () so I'll guess they used half the grain bill, therefore, half the hop bill so I'll guess IBUs about half of the above. It was a session IPA and competes very nicely in the field and is a rather understated beverage that I enjoyed a lot. It doesn't have to be highly hopped, barrel-aged or high ABV to be good.
Canopy Door - from Grimm Artisanal Ales - DIPA - 8% ABV - description - "spotlights the extremely rare and highly sought after Australian Enigma hops, sister to Galaxy. With our dry-hopping elixir of Enigma, El Dorado, Simcoe, and Citra hops, we've coaxed flavors of berries, stone fruit, and tropical delights - Raspberry, Peach, Strawberry, Grape, Mango, Nectarine, and Melon topped off with Cinnamon."
I'll rate it 4.75. Just outstanding. It tastes like the perfect IPA. Just the right mix of hoppy and flavor. Probably better than Burial and I don't say that lightly. Too complex for my palate to fully explain, but also simply refreshing. It's on draft at Stella brew, and well-worth it if you see it!
And really looking forward to tasting my purchase from Devildeac's Richmond run!
My intention is to do a side by side tasting.
The guy at the Bier Cellar said that they did justice by both beers, big and small.
Looking forward to the Tesselation and Tiny Tess tasting.
I wish more breweries would investigate the concept of scaling flavour and alcohol in balance.
Imagine if you could buy a beer series where the flavour profile was the same up and down an ABV spectrum. A properly done 4%, 6% and 10% mosaic hopped beer done right would be a fun thing to taste.
Out of time and typing skills tonight but there'll be two outstanding beverages I'll review tomorrow night while contemplating weekend travel and tasting plans...
Ymm, Seltzer?!?!
https://thefullpint.com/dans-blog/cr...a-real-bummer/
It’ll fizzle out quickly!
Bubbling with excitement!
I can’t firmly grasp the essence of effervescence.
Which is analogous to a 100 kiloton Jager Bomb!
First 6er/mixer from Veil Brewing delivered minutes ago to the lovely and vivacious Mrs. richardjackson199. DevildeacII will get #2 next weekend with fuse getting the 3rd at our next meet-up and I'm keeping #4 myself :p.
Your beer side manner is improving exponentially!
Singing loud and long public praises for richardjackson199 who is a man of honor, integrity and generosity with pies as well as beer and "business/consult" fees who just minutes ago had his lovely and vivacious wife/beer goddess deliver cash for the Veil Brewing assortment, a special gift for my beer selection/delivery service (past and present) and 3 selections from his gal Stella (no worries/secrets as his wife already knows about Stella;)) that included the following:
Funky Buddha-Key Lime Pine
Haw River-Saxy Machismo
and, one of Tripping William's favorites (both in name and liquid pleasures),
Unknown Brewing-Attachment 9596 (no wankerization needed:o)
Thanks!!
It’s come to a head.
Okay, my bubbles are burst! I’m past my expiration date, it appears.
Quite a day of activity and fun puns today.
https://www.fastcompany.com/90374573...tm_content=rss
It’s tangential since it is referring to distilled spirits.
Like Beyond Meat is pea protein based, the article explores the idea of if alcohol made from peas would be palatable as growing peas is more environmentally friendly than grain.
I wonder if you could make “beer” from peas?
We’ve tilted at this in the past unsuccessfully.
Would anyone be interested in a DBR beer review day?
The goal would be to get as many people as we could (optimistically even ten posters would be an amazing start) to agree to drink and review a particular beer on a particular day.
Given regional preferences, it might be easier to suggest a style.
That said, it would be pretty interesting to read a bunch of reviews on Dogfish Head, New Belgium or even a Sam Adams beer just for the community camaraderie.
Any takers?
I'll play - sounds fun. I'll probably have to drink my beer (and post review) on a Saturday or Sunday due to work, as my weekdays are unpredictable or predictably long at the office. But do it whenever it's best for the majority.
DD I hope those consult fees are tasty. Thanks again for the Veil brew - I can't wait!
If a night or weekend is selected that I'm "on call," I'm still "in" but may taste and post a day early or a day or two late.
I'll definitely share the Saxy Machismo with our son, perhaps as early as next weekend. The other two will be for personal consumption and the key lime beers are certainly great summer choices.
Gunner's Daughter-Mast Landing Brewing Company
Another winner from fuse's recent draft and stash from his recent Maine beer-cation. Thanks!
Pretty much a peanut butter, chocolate, latte milkshake (oh my!).
Pour from a pint can into a standard pint glass (two fairly equal half pint aliquots) brought forth a dark brown-hued elixir with an combination latte/milkshake head. Nose was a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup whilst sipping a medium roast iced coffee. Tastes? Well, simply drop the candy into the java, blend thoroughly and sip. Rich coffee, milk chocolate, cream (it's a milk stout so it's made with lactose) and Peter Pan creamy. IBUs? Who cares? It's dessert! The ABV was 5.5%. I think this would make a great beer float if a scoop or two of your favorite vanilla bean ice cream were plopped into the pint glass with 6-8 ounces of this brew.
Bearwaters Mountain Mojo
Need to do more research, but not a great beer and perhaps a brewery I’d avoid.
Billed as tasting like Italian sweet bread with a splash of mango and cascade hops.
Either I have been poured the wrong beer, or I am drinking a poor man’s Fat Tire imitation. Intense dislike.
Here it is on Untappd:
https://untappd.com/b/bearwaters-bre...n-mojo/2688693
Perhaps your problem/understanding was mistaking it for "Italian sweet bread" instead of Hawaiian :p:rolleyes:.
"Features a malt profile akin to Hawaiian sweet bread along with a splash of mango."
Boundary Bay Brewing,Bellingham, WA, Scotch Ale, extremely smooth and deliciously suited to my taste. I found it on my last day here. Have you ever heard of the brewery? TT
Bearwaters does not make good beer. They are probably Frog Level bad.
On a positive Haywood County beer note, Boojum Get Off My Cloud IPA is very tasty.
The lovely and talented Mrs. Tripping came home with a sixer of this beer, declaring it “hers.” Until she realized it wasn’t a dark beer, but instead only a little darker than golden brown. So, it became shareable. To my benefit. It has a little sweetness to it, but the coffee flavors are terrific. Not high-gravity at all. I’d be surprised if ABV exceeded 6.0%. If you want coffee in the summer, this wouldn’t be a bad choice.
Hop Rooted-Brewed and canned by Bearwaters Brewing Company for 7 Clans Brewing
Pretty average American-style IPA brewed with lots of Centennial hops giving it moderately bitter notes of pine and resin with its estimated 60-70 IBUs and 6.5% ABV.
This was included in my June 4 pack and for about $1.75, I'm not too upset but wouldn't buy any more of it or visit the brewery.
My favorite, and maybe Fortnight’s best.
http://fortnightbrewing.com/#Beer
I spent a bit of time there when Fortnight was new, and got to know the staff a little bit.
They are very proud of the coffee amber flavour, particularly because there in no coffee in the beer or brewing process.
