I have been craving a BLT and I cannot get one thanks to salmonella (http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-tomatoes9-2008jun09,0,4911758.story). I could've made one a week ago (I had pre-salmonella tomatoes) but I wasn't craving it and eating your own sandwich just isn't the same as having someone else make it for you.

sigh.

The Mexican place I go for lunch took the pico de gallo out of its burritos. Grrrrrr.

Me too! I was going to write about going to get carne asada as a substitute, but realized it would've started a serious rant.

You *do* realize California tomatoes (http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/2008-06/12/content_8350718.htm) have been cleared, right? We just ate at Sweet Tomato yesterday, and I've had tomatoes in my sandwiches this week :)

Sure, but that has nothing to do with the following fact: my local eateries still don't have tomatoes.

No fair. You torture me. Your punishment?

Take the 5 South until you pass the Hwy 78 East exit. Look on the right hand side of the road, you'll see me there, emaciated and malnourished hobbling around under a Duke flag. Please bring me a nice MLT, a mutton, lettuce and tomato sandwich, where the mutton is nice and lean and the tomato is ripe.

I'll see in you about eight hours.

I've never had mutton in a sandwich before... Your ideas are intriguing to me and I wish to subscribe to your newsletter. I do like me some goat tortas when I'm in Houston, so maybe I'll try this "MLT" some day.

You'll have to scale the Cliffs of Insanity and survive the Fire Swamp by battling the Rodents of Unusual Size in order to get the best MLTs around.

Coworker of mine in Costa Mesa got salmonella. He couldn't resist the tomatoes. Bummer.

You keep using that word. I do not believe it means what you think it means.

My parents got salmonella from a seafood restaurant in Laurinburg NC in 1980. My dad was sick for about 3 weeks I think and my mom was sick for 4 months. While pregnant with my sister. I was only 3.5, but actually have a visual memory, in the kitchen of that house, of my dad having to drink an entire bottle of Pepto.

I escaped because I hated fish when I was a kid and my mother brought me along a cheese sandwich.

So um, don't screw with salmonella.

I had salmonella once, and I felt mostly dead. Nasty.

I have never been sicker (well, except for when my appendix turned gangrenous) than after eating at a Captain D's. "Great little seafood" place my puhtooke! To this day I will not touch Red Lobster, Captain D's, seafood at Chinese buffets, any of that junk.

I am deeply sorry that you had to learn that lesson the hard way. A high school girlfriend and her family were freaks for Captain D's. That should've been my warning sign.

I'd say seafood, esp. shellfish, at ANY buffet is highly questionable... though I do occasionally go to Todai.

I love Todai...go there whenever I get a chance. Usually the one in Woodland Hills but I started going there(well, the parents took me) starting back in the 1980's.

No buffets, salad bars, etc. for me. I've seen WAY too many kids sneeze all over their hands and then touch the tongs for me to ever go through that again.

As for seafood specifically, I'm a total snob. If I'm not within 200 miles of the ocean, or at a HIGH class restaurant that can afford to fly it in fresh, the seafood is strictly off limits.
