I didn't realize how many random characters are in utf-8, the encoding used to represent the text you are seeing. Of course, due to keyboard limitations, we typically only type latin characters like these. But with the magic of cut and paste, you can add all sorts of fun stuff to your posts.

Here's a fictional story for (my, more than your) amusement:

Thursday night is ♻ night, and I ♡ the environment, so I do my civic duty. It's also garbage night, and I don't want my house to become a ☣, so I empty that as well. As most of you know, I'm a ♂, and I'm in a ⚤. Well, my wife (a ♀, duh) usually helps with this chore. But last week she was all "☞ do it!" And I was all, "what do you think, you're ♕ of the house? I'm the ♔! This is my ♖!" ⚠ to others, that line of reasoning doesn't work. In the end, I took out the garbage and ♻ myself, then bought her some ⚘, and she forgave me. I'm just a ♟in her game.

BTW, EarlJam is a ⚧.

Happens to me too....I have never figured it out, but on certain webpages, punctuation marks appear as black diamonds with question marks in them. I'm using Firefox with XP and have the Default Character Encoding set to UTF-8, but they still don't all render properly. Anybody know why this could be?

For example, all of Duke Blue Planet's article haves this problem on my browser. (e.g. http://www.dukeblueplanet.com/blog.asp?bid=16&pid=191).

Note that it does render properly on IE, but I refuse to use IE unless I have to. And the first post by BB doesn't render properly in IE either. The question marks become rectangles.....So it's not solely a browser issue, I suspect.

Not 100% sure about the first two, but the (?) following K is probably because the person typed this up using MS Word, which transformed the apostrophes to a more neat-looking character, and just copy-pasted this. My guess for the (?) after commas and periods, is maybe the person used double-spacing in those places, and Word changed those as well? I don't know if it does that, but that's just a guess.
