OUCH! This article does a number on him. Deservedly so. Especially since the mother was only 13 when Karl impregnated her (and he was a college sophomore.)

The articles say she was 13 when Demetrius was BORN. That means she was 12 or close to it when when Malone consorted with her. Yucch.

This is the article that the wires picked up and have generally quoted:

Bell is the son of Malone, but the Mailman had no role in Bell’s success except passing along athletic genes.

The two have had very little contact during Bell’s life. His mother, Gloria Bell, reportedly was only 13 years old and Malone a college sophomore at Louisiana Tech when Demetrius was born. Malone might have served jail time had her family asked the district attorney to file criminal charges.

Bell didn’t even know Malone was his father until after graduating from high school. When they finally met, Malone told the 18-year-old Bell it was too late to be his father, and that Bell would have to “earn his money on his own.”

Was Malone one of those guys who had to redo school? The article says he would have been a soph at the time he impregnated Bell's mom, but their bdays say that he was 20 at the time (he was born July 1963, Bell in May 1984).

No matter what, it's still very wrong to have sex with a 12/13 year old.

I think they said sophomore in college. most people are 18-20 as a sophomore.

While Karl Malone deserves every bit of criticism and scorn people have expressed over this there's a better side to the story. That Gloria Bell could have a child at age 13 and raise him into what by all accounts appears to be a remarkably well adjusted young man despite all the difficult circumstances is simply amazing.

Bell was unlucky that he ended up with a father who is a scumbag. But what he got from his mother and those who helped support her and her child is something greater than whatever athletic DNA that the Mailman delivered.

I hope he is able to stick with the Bills and enjoy an NFL career - he certainly deserves to succeed.

Where does it say that?

The article reports as follows:

Roger Clemens' alleged seedy indiscretions -- including a possible sexual relationship with a 15-year-old -- are nothing compared to what Malone has done. Malone reportedly impregnated Bell's mother when she was 13 and he was a sophomore at Louisiana Tech. Malone is lucky Chris Hansen wasn't around and he didn't have to answer to the authorities.

The article reports as follows:Right. Impregnated at 13. Not delivered at 13.

Thirteen is way to young for either. Malone is like the title said, a pig.

Right. Impregnated at 13. Not delivered at 13.

Another article - perhaps the Buffalo one - said that she was impregnated at 12 and delivered at 13.

(Does the difference really even matter?)

I know it was in college, although most people aren't 20 at the beginning of their sophomore year (which he would have been). As we've seen recently with Hansbrough or USC's team, that's not always the case with basketball players.
