I for one thought that Duke had a very good season, albeit a fairly poor tournament. In todays USA-ESPN Coaches poll they are ranked 16th...probably a correct ranking.

That said how many of you at the beginning of the basketball season ever thought that at the end of season Duke would be ranked number 16.? I know that I certainly did not.

If by beginning you mean preseaon-first few games, 16th sounds about right. After the Marq, Wisc and Pitt games, I was thinking top 6 or 7. By the last 1/3 of the season I was thinking top-20.

^pretty much agree with the above. I woulda put us a few spots higher, say, 12-14.

what were you expecting? duke started at #11 so finishing at #16 shouldn't have been that much of a shock.

If you go by the late-year 'slide' then we were playing like the 16th best team or so. Not a horrible slot at all. I dunno if a top-3 slot was ever really deserved.

All in all it was still a good season.

16th is a great ranking for us seeing how we finished off the year 6-5

I realize I am sounding like a pessimist, but #16 in the post-season does not appear positive to me. In the preaseason this year we were ranked #11; in short, we performed below the coaches' consensus expectations. Maybe that's because the coaches have a lot of respect for Duke -- more than we deserve this year at least -- but nevertheless a #16 final ranking does not fill me with glee.

Personally though, the team ended up where I thought we would end up in the preseason. I thought we were a #15-ish team who would reach the Sweet 16 and then lose out to a team we didn't match up well with.

Next season I expect us to be a #7-10-ish team and again reach the Sweet 16, and perhaps even Elite 8 if we get a decent draw. But if we can't get past the first weekend again I would be disappointed (assuming no major injuries of course).

based on the tournament. if we had lost to west virginia in the regular season, we wouldn't have dropped nearly this much, even disregarding the fact that nelson, singler, and scheyer were sick and henderson, thomas, and zoubek were in need of surgery. if we had defeated west virginia, we probably still would be ranked in the top 10.

viewing the year as a whole, we were clearly a top 10 team. 6 losses all year, solid wins over unc, wisconsin, clemson, marquette, davidson, and miami. top 10 final ranking in all the computer rankings.

in reality, we had a top 10 year, which is a little better than our preseason ranking of 13.

Nice to see Davidson in Top 10.

And WVU ranked in top 20 after being picked to finish 10th in BE.

yea i like davidson there, especially with the schedule they had with a team like that. I was pulling for them but knew if they beat kansas I could see north carolina as the national champs now. So I'm glad at the way it worked out and they still got the national attention. With duke's ranking I would say that is fair the way we ended the season which is how they will judge.

This is a good reason that the final AP poll -- which comes out BEFORE the NCAA Tournament is a better gauge of season-long success than the USA Today poll, which is always skewed -- good and bad -- by NCAA Tournament performance.

To my mind, Duke finished ninth (its AP finish), not 16th, on the season. That's a truer picture of the team's season long performance. Yes, the team fizzled in the NCAA Tournament, which is a different measure of success.

Take the Duke-Davidson comparison.

Duke ended up 28-6 and No. 7 in the RPI
Davidson ended up 28-7 and No. 35 in the RPI

Duke ended the season with seven top 50 wins and 14 top 100 wins
Davidson ended the regular season with zero top 100 wins .... ZERO. Their only top 100 wins came in the NCAA Tournament. They were 0-4 against top 100 teams going into the event, so they finished 3-5 against the top 100.

Duke beat Davidson head-to-head at Davidson (actually at Charlotte, but that was officially a Davidson home game).

Davidson deserves credit for a great NCAA run ... but does a great three-game stretch (okay, four if you give them the close game against Kansas) determine a season-long ranking?

Anyway, that's why I've always believed there are two ways to measure a season's accomplishment. The NCAA Tournament is the most important and by that measure, Duke didn't perform well. But it's not so important that it overshadows everything (as it does in the USA Today poll). That's why the final AP poll is a better way to look at the entire season.

Duke finished ninth in 2008!

Why not? Our season was better than their season. Our better is better than their better, to coin a phrase. So what if we lost to them? By your logic, why Kansas State ranked ahead of Kansas? They beat them, you know.

You put together a poll of everyone in Div 1 basketball based soley on who beat who then. First off you can't do it. And secondly if you ever thought you could you couldn't, transitive property doesn't apply in basketball.

Duke should be ahead of Davidson too, right? It is amazing how much stock people put in one NCAA game. If WVU and Duke played 10 times, how many games do you think Duke would win?

I think that Duke would win 3-4 of the 10 games if they played late in the season. Unlike like the late '80s-early 90s and the late 90s-early 00s, recent Duke teams peak in February and disappoint in March.

That, and it's an end of season poll. This poll isn't worried about how we played in February. If it was, we wouldn't be #16.

If you're trying to tell me that we were playing better baskertball than WVU at the end of the season, even excluding our game against them, then I'd have to disagree. Heading into the tournament, WVU beat teams like Pitt (remember them?) and UCONN. Who did Duke beat heading into the postseason? UVA and Georgia Tech?

C'mon guys. For whatever reason makes you sleep better at night (flu, injuries, plain bad luck), WVU was playing better basketball than Duke at the end of the year and thus should be ranked ahead of us. I really don't see the argument.

I hear what you guys are saying, but to add to Class06's post...

Computer rankings measure a team over the course of the season (i.e. your first 10 wins are as good as your last 10), but these polls are evaluation at a point in time. So of course the coaches' poll should be skewed by tournament results, and by that metric, we weren't a top 10 team.

I see that the health of the team was mentioned by several posters to this thread. I'm sorry if I missed it, but does anyone have a link to a definitive source, which states for a fact that several Duke players were indeed sick over the, "Lost Weekend."

Added Rose and Pargo as NBA entrants. You've got to think that Douglas-Roberts will go now that Rose has announced for the NBA.

Added Wiggins as a transfer for UCONN as he is heading out the door. Wiggins averaged 19 MPG and 6.7 PPG last year for the Huskies.

Texas stands alone as the only team in the Top 25 returning all of their players for next year.

Added Rush and Arthur as departures form Kansas. That makes 5 players leaving Kansas. Chalmers might want to get out while he can and make it a nice even number, 6.

Added Love and Westbrook as departures from UCLA. There goes the inside. Collison should leave as they are going to be guard heavy next year and Holliday might steal the limelight from Collision.

Texas could still lose Augustine and James to the draft. I also find it interesting that none of the UNC players announced their return at their pep rally.

Texas could still lose Augustine and Jones to the draft.

Yes, and Memphis will likely lose Douglas-Roberts. And Kansas may lose Chalmers.

Based on what I see on this list, several of these teams are going to be decimated by exits.

FYI - it appears that Clark of Louisville has unentered his name in the draft and will return to school.

Is Alexander really considering going pro? I have to believe he'll reconsider.

Westbrook hasn't officially entered the draft.

Alexander is testing the waters:

Sam Young, Pitt, still listed as "likely to go" as is Tyler Smith,Tenn

I wonder what is going on with Westbrook. There are alot of links that say he has declared for the draft.

No surprise, Memphis loses Chris Douglas-Roberts

As for UCLA's Westbrook, I linked an article in another thread in which he said he would stay in the draft if he was projected to go in the top 20.

Added A Moute for UCLA as an NBA departure, altough I'm sure he will pull out of the draft. 8.8 PPG and 6 RPGs isn't really all that impressive. If he does leave that'll really hurt UCLA, especially on the defensive end and with rebounding.

Added Roberts to the list as an early entrant to the NBA from Memphis. Down goes Memphis. Dozier must want to get off that sinking ship but I don't think he can go anywhere yet. Sucks for him. He is about to get Tyreked.

Duke should be ahead of Davidson too, right? It is amazing how much stock people put in one NCAA game. If WVU and Duke played 10 times, how many games do you think Duke would win?

Probably 1 or 2. Do you remember that we could not hit a three pointer? Do you remember that the game was not close in score, nor was it competative over the last 15 minutes? I hope that our players remember.

Declarees for today - Chalmers (KU), Dozier and Anderson (Memphis), Abrams (Texas - uh, what?), and any others?

If Arthur (likely) and Chalmers (possibly) stay in the draft, Kansas will lose five seniors (your list, plus bench players Rodrick Stewart and Jeremy Case) and three underclassmen.

I still expect Chalmers to come back. If he does they'll be borderline top 25. If not, they'll be borderline tournament.

Good catch. Calipari comes across like an agent when talking about his players and the NBA.

For senior attrition I was only including guys that playerd over 10 MPG, which Stewart did fit.

One of the articles mentioned that if he can go in the first round than he will stay in, that doesn't sound like a reach to me and based on those comments I think he is gone.

On Chalmers, you're right that if he's first round, he's gone. But information from Self was that he was anywhere from 25 to 35, but that he could work up through pre-draft workouts. Well, sure. But what this will really require is a guarantee from a team.

Now, I think Chalmers can play the point in the pros. He's got long arms. He's got bounce. He elevates well on his jumper and has a good penetration game. He's run screen roll for several years. And he's vastly improved his assist to turnover ratio and assist numbers over the course of the last couple of years. I just want him to do what's best for him. If he can get in the first round, he should go. At 6'1" and still going to play the two-guard next year with Sherron Collins on the ball, he's not going to vastly raise his stock. His best rationale for staying would be that the stock of his competitors next year will be lots lower than this year's freshman/combo guard laden draft.

But if he's got a guarantee and can get guaranteed money, he should go. I just don't know if a 6'1" guard is going to get that.

What would make this list really interesting is to list the % of points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks that will be gone as a result of losses to graduation, early departure and transfer. Now who out there has the time and inclination? :D Though the list would be more insightful once the deadline for returning to school passes.

Added Crews and Smith to the list of departures for Tennessee. That makes 5 departures for UT next season, that is alot to overcome. They must have screwed up bad for Pearl to dismiss them as they needed the depth and Smith played over 20 MPG last season.

Below is a revised list of the final ESPN/USA mens Top 25 teams with the players (10 MPG or more) that they are losing, either to senior attrition, the draft, transfer, or dismissal...

This is going to be a thankless job for you, especially when a bunch of the guys who declared for the draft withdraw their names. I think it was something like 30 players that withdrew from the draft last year after declaring. I suspect we'll see the same happen with a lot of names on this list as well.

I'm a glutton for punishment. Helps me follow whats going on with the top teams and I figure some other people might want to see it also. So transfer, withdraw, do whatever, just bring the pain.

I guess that I have been alseep, because I just discovered this thread. What a tremenous understaking, and a useful format to take in the facts as they change over time.
Looking at the list, among the top ten or so teams, UNC looks like a powerhouse. If talent and depth alone won championships, all the money would be on UNC. Fortunately, that is not the way it works.

After looking at the list: UNC, Texas, Duke, Pitt, Notre Dame, Purdue, NOVA, and UCONN look like teams that will be pretty solid for next year. Each team only loses one or two players and they weren't All-Americans (except Augustin).

I just pulled this up from last summer. Kind of interesting to look back and see the attrition that affected last year's top 25 and how some of those teams fared. It would be interesting to pare this with what teams are bringing in for the next season. I'll try and do this again this year when the final Top 25 is posted.
