I have always felt that NCAA Tourney refs let more physical play go than ACC refs... however, this is just anecdotal.

A friend told me he found that ACC refs call 20 fouls on average in an ACC game. I don't where he got that from.

Point is - anyone know the average number of fouls called in an ACC league game vs average number of fouls called in an NCAA Tourney game over last 5 years? I would love to have these stats

20 fouls would be an exceedingly light number. That would mean each team would barely reach the double bonus in each half. I'd say the average is closer to 30.

However, I can't imagine games much more loosely called than UNC/Duke in Cameron, UNC/Clemson in the tourney, and FSU at UNC. I thought I was watching the George Mason game all over again a few times in those games.

It would also be "instructional" to analyze the number of fouls called by ACC referees before and after the three "Big East Thugs" became ACC members; my thesis is ACC officials -- and the Conference's senior leadership --have become a lot more tolerant of overly-physical play (not exclusively committed by Miami, VT and BC) in the last few seasons.

i thought it was intereresting when Memphis played TENN how the refs let them really play in the first half, but then clamped down in the second half....not like ACC clamped down, but definitely started calling stuff they were letting slide in the first half...

Duke averages for the season committing 19 fouls themselves and , as a random other team, Maryland commits 17 fouls a game: so using those two teams as a random sample… the acc averages 36 fouls called a game.

ANyone know what the average called in the NCAA Tourney is ? Or , even better, the average called in Duke's NCAA Tourney games the past few years since that would reflect the same style of play from at least one of the teams...

A couple interesting points:

1. Duke STILL gets all the calls(except when we are being mugged)
2. Did we really play Miss State twice in 2005?;)

I'm not so much bothered by the fouls that are called, as much as the fouls that don't get whistles.

this does not account for the fact that players have to adapt in-game to how the refs are calling things...
