I came across this today and thought it was interesting. It should be a good reminder why we shouldn't get all twisted around recruiting rankings. These are the top 100 recruits in the class of 2001 - as ranked by ESPN.com.

Anyone remember Jonathan Hargett? Or Harvey Thomas? Or Of the top 50, other than Ben Gordon, T.J. Ford, Curry and Chandler, who has made a name for themselves in the NBA? I guess Lee and Childress have had some degree of success. Boy, this was a weak class.

Its always fun to look back at past classes and see how they have done. I agree this seems like a pretty weak class in general.

You are looking at it from NBA team point of view and not college team point of view. I think recruiting wise, Hodge definately fit his bill, I'm sure several others did as well, but I'm not that familiar with him. Ewing was a good one for Duke at college, but obviously wasn't NBA ready. Of course a bunch of the guys who went NBA early were busts, they weren't close to ready, but if they had gone to a school and played, you probably would remember their names.

Well... Kwame Brown has made quite a name for himself - Bust. He also cost MJ a job in DC.

Where is this list from? Jason Williams was rated much, much higher in that class - he was the number one point guard. And Carlos was the number one overall prospect on the ESPN list for a while that year before drifting a little back - but nowhere near 21.

This list actually makes me question all the others posted here because this particular listing of prospects and class year was heavily scrutinized and discussed at the time.

I'd say Coach K went after the right guys in this class, wouldn't you?

Re-ordering:

21. Boozer
36. Johnson
44. Richardson
35. Dalembert
14. Dunleavy
8. Kapono
9. Blake
20. Collison
11. Cook

My guess is that J-will would currently be #1 or #2 on this list if it weren't for the accident.

My first thought was "my god, how long was Marco Killingsworth in college for?"

I couldn't have been only 5 years, right?

First, you missed a couple of NBA guys -

Mo Williams was a star at Bama and is having a great year for the Bucks in the NBA.
Josh Childress was a star at Stanford and is in the NBA - that's if you count the Hawks as part of the NBA.

As for the rankings not meaning much, I don't know - while there may not be many guys on that list that have done much in the NBA if you look at the production of those who did go to college you can see that those guys at the top of the list had some pretty solid college careers. Most of the top ranked guys who didn't have a good college career are guys who had off the court problems:

Hargett and Cisse are both sad stories having let agents screw up their careers.
Sensley had academic issues and never played for Cal.
Harvey Thomas got mixed up in the situation at Baylor but had a pretty good year and then tried to go pro.
Carlos Hurt got kicked off the Louisville team and ended up playing for an NAIA school.
Sampson had a solid freshman year at Cal and then went pro too soon.
Rashad Carruth got kicked out of Kentucky, kicked out of Oklahoma, and then left the team for "personal reasons" at Southern Miss.
Whaley never made it to Missouri after being tried for statutory rape in HS. Instead he ended up at Cincinnati where he was kicked out and went to a JC.
Tony Key tried to go straight to the league out of HS and was never drafted. Instead he end up at a JC.
Edelin got into trouble with some rape allegations. He never played a full season for Syracuse but on the court he played pretty well.
Brandon Bender transferred out of Louisville and ended up at an NAIA school
Omari Westley went JC then to Cleveland State before getting kicked off the team for the old "violation of team rules."
Taurence Johnson had a bunch of suspensions at FIU.

Adam was a buddy of mine, I played some pick-up with him during the summers and some AAU Ball. I remember when he turned down UMass, people in MA were not pleased. I think he's in the D-League now.

This was pre-summer - before their senior year. That was part of the point I was making - that we are essentially at that point with the 2009 class and I feel pretty confident that we are going to end up with a stellar class. We shouldn't get too hung up on rankings at this point.

Or Of the top 50, other than Ben Gordon, T.J. Ford, Curry and Chandler, who has made a name for themselves...

Killingsworth transferred from Auburn to Indiana and had to sit out a year, but I'm pretty sure it was only 5 years.

That is a short-sighted post. You're looking at 1 year, a year that was relatively weak, and saying "recruiting rankings don't mean much." How bout we take a gander at just last year.

1. OJ Mayo
2. Michael Beasley
3. Kevin Love
4. Eric Gordon
5. Derrick Rose
6. Kyle Singler
7. Bill Walker - Actually an 06 commit
8. Donte Greene
9. Jerryd Bayless
10. Nick Calathes

How bout keeping those rankings in perspective? It's no secret Duke's been so good the past 15-20 years b/c Coach K has gotten the very best players. Recruiting matters. Period.

Where was Chris Douglas-Roberts on that list?

Point made with this years class and their respective rankings last year.

How much fun is it to see this freshman class, i think this will be the top class for a LONG time.
