Tar Heel Uniform Mixup

Saw this linked on another site, and thought some of the historians on this board might have some insights.

This is an old picture of Dean Smith with Bobby Lewis and Larry Miller. The interesting thing is that, despite being the Tar Heels, on the shorts, the heel is white and the toes are black (almost as if they were the Tar Toes). Any idea why or when the switch to the correct logo occurred?

My favorite thing is the socks. Even the Tarheels way back in the 60s realized how disgusting "Carolina Blue" is. They have been trying to add deeper, natural, beautiful shades of blue to their uniforms for decades. Just look at their cheerleaders (http://www.flickr.com/photos/carolinarob7/1352437985/) lately - there's more navy blue than powder blue! It seems like they have been trying to correct this awful color mistake of theirs for a long time...
