Don't know if anybody noticed, but Santa Clara knocked out San Francisco 51-50 last night in the WCC quarterfinals.

San Francisco finishes the season at 10-21.

That almost certainly ends the coaching career of Eddie Sutton, who took the San Francisco job at midseason on an interim basis -- basically to get his 800th career win (he was at 798 when he quit Oklahoma State). He achieved his goal, winning six games and finishing with 804 career wins.

Coach K is now at 801 wins, so he needs four wins in postseason to pass Sutton for the No. 5 spot on the all-time win list. That's a doable goal.

Even if Sutton changes his mind and returns next season, there's no doubt K will soon surpass him -- Duke is going to win a lot more games in 2008-09 than San Francisco. But it would be nice to get into fifth place before the offseason. It would also make Coach K the leading active coach in wins.

PS Fourth place belongs to Jim Phelan, who retired with 830 wins. K is on pace to get that late next season.
