Why does it have DM with an 11.7 ppg average?

Excellent question!

Clipsfan
02-08-2008, 12:59 PM
Hmm, it looks like his average was 11.7 after the Dec 8th game against Michigan. I'd guess the data was just entered then.

I read Lofton's blurb and I thought that DM's sounded much better. The praise for Lofton was that he doesn't badmouth the schools near him that didn't recruit him.

The greater emphasis on the off-court achievements of the candidate reflects Lowe’s commitment to helping young people build successful careers and encouraging students to use their skills to make an impact in life.
I know nothing about DM's off-court achievements, except that he made it to his senior year without flunking out, and I'm not sure how tough that is for a scholarship BB player. Is he on track to graduate?

After tonights game against Wake, should I still vote for him?? He was bad.

I will anyway he's the only Dukie to vote for.

When I think of "bad," I tend to think of somebody who didn't try or who blew up emotionally or who made a series of big mistakes.

Markie scored 15 points in the first half, hauled down a bunch of rebound against bigger guys, and hung in there like a warrior. Would he have liked to have made more free throws and hit more of those shots in the last 10"? Hmmm, let's guess. Perhaps you don't think he worked out hard enough during the off season, but perhaps you remember that he worked out with a frikkin' Navy Seal last summer, is in incredible shape, and specifically made a point of practicing his free throws and ball handling.

In other words, I don't let someone off easily who tosses of a line like, "he was bad." He wasn't perfect, but he gave it a good shot. If all you can say is that "he's the only Dukie to vote for," just don't vote.

johnb
02-18-2008, 12:58 PM
Hmm.. Now I read that Ben is a high school student, so perhaps I'll rephrase: when tossing out criticisms of good guys who sweat every day with "Duke"s on their chests, it is probably wise to be very specific about your concerns. Kind of like with kids. Markie isn't "bad," but he had trouble with his ft's and his finishing and made a couple of regrettable fouls. And perhaps add in a bit about how our expectations have become remarkably high, given that this team wasn't expected to even compete for the ACC championship but has done so in the context of Nelson being our best player.

Guys, when the above group was created (middle of last week) Demarcus was down by 3% pts, and had been hovering at 2-3% points behind for several weeks. Now its tied!

Since then (in 5 days) they have amassed over 230 people to the group and are not only spreading the word but letting people know (and reminding them) to vote everyday AND ONCE ON EACH BROWSER. I truly believe that by spreading the word and educating about voting in each browser, how to clear your cookies, etc. they are making a big difference. as in several hundred votes PER DAY difference. And that's only in 5 days. If you havent joined please do and spread the word to your friends.

All this work is really making a difference guys. well done!

I just completed my daily ritual of voting for DeMarcus (which you can and should do at http://basketball.seniorclassaward.com/public/men/vote.aspx?KEY=&DB_OEM_ID=4200&DB_LANG=&IN_SUBSCRIBER_CONTENT=

and noticed that DeMarcus and Chris Lofton are tied.

Come on, let's get this for Markie. Go Duke!:)

I cast my vote for DeMarcus in the Lowe's Senior Class award on Firefox and they were tied: 30% each. But they had Chris Lofton listed first.

When I opened Internet Explorer and cast my vote there (I cast 3 votes a day on each of my 3 computers), DeMarcus had jumped to the top of the list. They still both have 30%, but apparently DeMarcus now has a higher count.

Come on, everyone. Let's get this for the Captain! :)

...and I don't understand why. Maybe UT has more fans. We usually can skew just about any poll. I believe that Markie's stats are better than Lofton on most measures, so you'd think Markie would be in 1st place. Onward Duke U skewers.

Just for all of your information, the online fan voting isn't the only determining factor in who wins the award. DMarc could come in second and still win. From the press release: "Fan balloting will be coupled with votes from coaches and media to determine the male and female recipients." http://basketball.seniorclassaward.com/Basketball/68/news.aspx

Obviously, we want to help him as much as we can, but this isn't the only decisive vote. I heard it counts 25% from somebody else, but haven't been able to verify that. Also, don't know how the 25% is weighted. Based on percent? Rank (1st or 2nd)? If percent, they're going to end up close either way, so it will come down to the other voters. I'm voting a lot anyways! Just wanted to clarify that up!

Nah, there are just THAT many more people that go to TENN. They have 20k undergrads, for goondess' sake.

I was sorta hoping someone on our board might have written a script for us, so that we'd only have to enter the code over and over. (I've never been above a bit of gamesmanship!)

Oh, well. Looks like Markie's going down on this one. UT and all the haters.

How does the percentage difference change that much in just a couple days? I understand that UTenn has 20k ugrads, but they were not voting in much greater numbers than us previously. Could unc, md, & other haters have just found out about this & are now starting to vote? (Perhaps we should call on UTenn haters at Vandy & Memphis to start voting for Markie :-) Seems as though the Lowe's folks would not want someone tweaking things w/ scripts or bots, but perhaps I am just am out to lunch on this.

Tennessee is a bigger school, but if you vote as often as you can, we can do this for the Captain!

Part of the problem is that Carolina fans are voting for Lofton because they saw the "Vote for Demarcus" thread posted over at TDD. If Lofton knocks them out of the tournament their votes will be well placed.
