Greetings Equine Aficionados,

Ready for another year tracking the stable of Bobby Hurley's horses (where we can find them)?

I just found this horse winning today at Aqueduct in the feature.

Go Go Shoot is a 3 year old gelding, who is out of Bobby's stallion Songandaprayer. Today, Go Go wins the Jimmy Winkfield purse at Aqueduct by an easy 3 1/2 lengths at a nice price of 9 to 1 ($21.80).
This is the horse's 3rd race, and second win. All races at 6 furlongs (3/4 of a mile).

Here is some additional details:

The horse was bred by Devil Eleven stables, but was listed as being owned by Robert Hurley. That is a difference with a distinction. I would consider that a different tax entity and therefore it was interesting to note that I was able to observe the race and Bobby's racing silks. Thoroughbred horse owners have the luxury of defining (or designing) the "colors" that are worn by the jockeys on their mounts. Bobby's colors, as you might guess, are adourned with Duke Royal Blue. The cap is pure Duke Blue, with no discernable other highlights. The sleaves are a checkerboard white and royal blue boxes. The torsoe is white, with royal blue shoulders, folded over toward the front.

Additionally, the Jimmy Winkfield stakes, won by Go Go Shoot today, is named in memory of a famous African American jockey and trainer and is run each year on Martin Luther King day. Jimmy Winkfield was the last African American jockey to win the Kentucky Derby in 1902 (and he won in 1901 too). You can read more about him at:

Here are Bobby Hurley's Stable's silks. Sorry for the picture quality.

Described in the Program Pages as:
Royal Blue and White Halves.

<if someone could point me to instructions on how to post a .jpg that I have on my local machine I will be glad to edit this post. The yellow hill sign above does not seem to be accepting any of the usual file:///c:/file.jpg type entries>

Thanks.

Bobby Hurley's nice stakes sprinter Praying For Cash is entered in the Sunshine Millions on Saturday. The Sunshine Millions program is a nice series that is put on to create a competition between California and Florida bred horses. They run in a series of 8 races, at various condiations, 4 at Santa Anita and 4 at Gulfstream, this saturday, and determine a state champion on points. Sort of a southern league championship.

Praying For Cash is being trained by Kiaran McLaughlin, who is a very well regarded trainer. The race is a 6 furlong (3/4 mile) sprint.
The horse has not raced since early October, but has put in two bullet workouts in the last 9 days; could be ready at a price. These are lesser horses than he is used to seeing.

Here is a URL to the Past Performances, courtesy of BrisWatch:
http://www.brisnet.com/bris_link/pdfs/kiaranmclaughlin_100537.pdf

An aside here, Cobalt Blue is in the race.
Merv Griffin was a horse lover. He had 2 notable horses at the end of his life. Stevie Wonderboy, who was a champion 2 year old who had soundness problems as a 3 year old (make your money while you can), and Cobalt Blue who was on the triple crown trail early last year. Cobalt Blue is owned by a group that is still in Merv's name. He was a great patron for this sport.

Greetings Horse Lovers,

Much to tell.

First, Go Go Shoot, Devil Eleven Stables nice 3 year old gelding, will be racing on Monday in the Fred "Cappy" Capossela Stakes at Aqueduct. Go Go Shoot is nicely paced for this 5 horse race, and is in against a few nice horses. Here is a URL, courtesy of Briswatch, http://www.brisnet.com/bris_link/pdfs/darley_102709.pdf
Cappy Capossela was a local "Gambling" character. He could be found around the racetracks or sometimes gambling casinos around NY or NJ. He actually had short lived cable TV show where he'd sit at folding card table, with a deck of cards, in dark glasses (with a bad hair piece), and talk gambling philosophy for a half hour. The stories were interesting to say the least.

Secondly, I've taken the liberty of doing some forensic studying of moves that Bob Hurley has done on behalf of Devil Eleven Stable for his horse interests. There are quite a number of horses to be found in the records that have been purchased. A number of 2 year olds, and yearlings, that have been purchased in the past 2 years may or may not be owned at this time, or may be intended to be kept to race.
For example, last month Devil Eleven Stables purchased a yearling in the Ocala Breeders Sale for $62,000 for a filly by Songandaprayer and Into Temptation. This filly could be sold again as a yearling later this year in a process called "pinhooking". Horses grow a lot during their yearling year and this can show a big profit if they don't hurt themselves out in the field (and that does happen).

I have counted 4 purchases of yearlings/weanlings in the past 2 years by Devil Eleven Stable by Songandaprayer (and another purchase by a Touch Gold filly). Songandaprayer is Hurley's Kentucky Derby Horse from several years ago. It stands to reason that he and his partners can best recognize what young horses might look like their sire and might develop into good looking horses a bit later in life. We'll keep an eye out to see if these horses get named and for whom they race for.

There have been a number of other horses that have raced for Bobby Hurley, but are not likely racing now. Older horses that are probably not worth following.

And more interesting, Devil Eleven Stable breeds horses that get sold at auction. Some of them are pretty good too.
Here are the names of some horses that were bred, but are not owned by, Devil Eleven Stables (with comments):

- Anewday - C Vindication - Charm A Gendarme (3 year old)
Nominated to the KY Derby this year. Charm A Gendarme was
Purchased a year ago by Devil Eleven as a broodmare in foal to Roman
Ruler

- Big Casino - C Songandaprayer - Stargirl (3 year old)
Nominated to the KY Derby this year.

- Preachin Man - C Songandaprayer - Sweet Cameron <<see that name
Winner, Nominated to the KY Derby this year (3 year old)

- Morakami - F Fusaichi Pegasus - Astrid 5 year old

Let me know if you think Hurley bred horses are worth tracking.

Bobby Hurley's Go Go Shoot won the Cappy Capossela Stakes today at Aqueduct. The horse went right to the front and ran fast fractions. Anyone familiar with the Queens oval during the winter months can tell you that on the rail, and in the front, is the place to be, but the fractions were quite fast 45 3/5 for 4 furlongs and 57 4/5 for 5 fulongs. The track was fast, but there was definitely moisture in the track. The race was won, by a neck, in a respectable 1:10 3/5. On closer inspection, it is notable that Go Go Shoot was giving 6 lbs to the 2nd and 3rd place horses. Most handicappers equate a pound (lb) to a length.

Here is the race chart, courtesy of the Daily Racing Form:
http://www.drf.com/drfNCWeeklyHorseDisplay.do?track=AQU&country=USA&raceDate=20080218&raceNo=8

Notes: It is good to see the owner of a stud having the faith in his stallion and patronizing him as much as Bobby does his horse Songandaprayer. And he is reaping great benefits from it.

Thanks Lavabe for that link.

I actually get the NYRA feed each day on delayed replay, but had to wait till the next day to catch it. GGS did not weaken much at the end of the race.

This horse reminds me a little bit of another grey, Lady's Secret. Started off going to the front and went as fast as she could until she couldn't anymore. Got stronger and could eventually carry her speed up to 1 1/8 mile and actually won the Whitney and Horse of the Year. Go Go Shoot has a long long way to go before sniffing that daughter of Secretariat's hooves, but it is nice to see a good front running effort.

Here is my next attempt to attach photos of the Hurley colors; quite possible the same as Devil Eleven's colors (probably kosher). Attachments may be grainy, but there is a limit on file size.

Greetings,

My wide net of searchers turned up Divine Light, a 3 year old filly racing against relatively inexpensive claimers in Philadelphia.
Here is a link for a 2nd place showing at the $12.5K claimers (including the claiming allowance for age).

Greetings,

Another new horse surfaced today in the 2nd race at Aqueduct. A horse named Megalodon, owned exclusively by Bobby Hurley, finished 4th.
Here is the chart, courtesy of the Daily Racing Form:
http://www.drf.com/drfNCWeeklyHorseDisplay.do?track=AQU&country=USA&raceDate=20080229&raceNo=2

I was able to dig up the Past Performance sheet and it tells an interesting story.
Here is the Past Performance, courtesy of Briswatch:
http://www.brisnet.com/bris_link/pdfs/vinery_103632.pdf

Megalodon was purchased as a 2 year old, probably as a 2 year old in training, for $310K. And this was the horse's 5th start with previous earnings of less that $2K. You could have bought this horse today for $75K, and this is after Bobby put in 1 years worth of training bills and stakes payments into the horse. Think of those numbers. This can be an unforgiving game.

Bobby Hurley's nice 3yo filly Dagger won today at Aqueduct. I haven't seen the replay yet, but the chart looks impressive.
Here it is, courtesy of Brisnet:
http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/instant.cgi?date=2008-03-06&track=AQU&country=USA&race=7&type=inc&print=on

Dagger was bumped at the start, but stalked the lead for the first half mile after regaining her compusure. Then took command. She was the slight favorite at 2.1 to 1 odds, which would have been a nice return $6.40 for your $2 investment. I'd expect to see her entered into a stakes race the next time out.

I would also note that Dagger was bred by Overbrook farm, which is the home of Storm Cat, Dagger's grandsire and Tactical Cat her sire.
Overbrook is also home to Kentucky Derby winner Grindstone (who I recall was sporting Overbrook's colors), and BC winners Jump Start and Cat Thief.

It looks like Praying For Cash is entered for thursday at Aqueduct Race 5. I believe there are some different owners, but Robert M. Hurley is still among them.

The last race was a real stinker, has the look of maybe being sick, but PFC has been working consistently toward this race. This is an Optional Claiming race, but PFC is not in for a tag. There are a couple of high quality stakes horses in here for horses that have been lightly raced since last summer (or have done poorly since last summer).

Praying For Cash finished last in the field of 6. He took the lead part way through the race but folded his tent in the stretch. Not surprizingly he needed the race. Interestingly, the only horse in for a tag in the race won it. Perhaps the other horses were in for conditioning as well.

Devil Horse stable has entered Tiger Woodman into a modest price claiming race at Gulfstream Park on Friday Race 7. This horse finished well in his last start against lesser company. Tiger Woodman is leaving from post 7.
Note that post 5 has Westmoreland who most recent was claimed from "Blue Devil Stable." These are the guys I mentioned earlier who are not affiliated with Duke. I know that they thought their horse would do better than the 3rd place he would eventually get.

The premature end to the devil's season feels much like a loss of your favorite horse. As an owner, I know that feeling. But, there is always another day and another race. The boys will be back next year and the Women's team has just won their game. So let's move on from here.

Here are todays tid bits from the Devil Eleven and Robert M. Hurley Stables:

Devil Eleven breeding credit (not owned) Morakami finished 5th in the $150K Bourbonette Oaks. Here is the chart courtesy of the Daily Racing Form:

The last time Divine Light raced, I failed to notice that she was claimed out of the race she was in. For those who are not familiar with the practice, "Claiming Races" are races where the owners have the opportunity to put a horse into a race where the quality of the horses are based on the price they can be bought out of the race. In the case of Divine Light, she was entered in a maiden claimer of $12.5K, probably with a premium (additional amount) because of her age and sex (perhaps 20% - I'm not sure what it is for thoroghbreds).
Here is her new Past Performance where you'll notice the claim from Devil Eleven stables.

Robert M. Hurley owned Go Go Shoot takes his once blemished record into the 7 furlong Bayshore Stakes on Saturday April 5th. The Bay Shore used to be the mid-winter start of the New York path to the Triple Crown, but has lately been moved later in the stakes schedule to become an early spring sprint alternative to the Triple Crown path.

The track is likely to sloppy due to rain the day before and early on Saturday morning. There are a few good horses in the field including Laysh Laysh Laysh who was closing in on GGS's throat latch at the end of the last race. GGS picks up 3 lbs to Laysh Laysh Laysh's 1 lb increase. Invader from Laurel Gattapardo, who has shown excellence at a mile and at 7F will also be entered. This is the first week on the outer track at Aqueduct, so the race is going to be from the chute on the far side, so there will be several furlongs before the first and only turn. This is important since there does not look to be any superior early speed inside of GGS, which is all important at Aqueduct. The big question is whether GGS can carry his speed the addition furlong.

Devil Eleven Stable's Tiger Woodman is in to go in the 4th race on Saturday 4/12/08 at Keeneland on Blue Grass Stakes Day. It is a mile and 3/16 on the Turf. There is one obvious superior horse in the race named Marchfield; it has not been out since last summer (perhaps recovering from an injury) but fits the non-winners of 4 condition. Equitable on the outside is also a nice horse.

Devil Eleven Stable and John Goldtharpe's Tiger Woodman wins by half a length at Keeneland on Bluegrass Stakes Day. It looks like he laid back and circled the field "10 wide" on the last turn to out kick the field. A very nice win that will help pay for some oats and wheat for the next few months.
Much like his name sake, he seems to be having a good day (TW is -3 at the Masters so far this day as of this writing).

A 2 Year Old, making its first start today in the first race at Keeneland, is Cameron Crazies.
This horse is owned by Devil Eleven Stables and is trained by D. Wayne Lukas.
This horse is out of the first crop of Lion Heart who was on the derby trail 3 years ago (Smarty Jones' year I think). He was a very nice horse. Grandsire Tale of the Cat was also very precocious and is an elite sire now. The 3 Furlong work at 34 seconds is excellent. The broodmare sire is Defensive Play; what a natural!

Cameron Crazies started off her career finishing a very nice 2nd place behind another LIon Heart filly by a 1.5 lengths. The finish was in odds order, so no surprize for the bettors. This looks like a very capable filly; according to the write-up, she closed from 4 wide on the turn. I'm sure the connections are very happy. Remember, Secretariat finished 4th in his first start.

Go Go Shoot shows that he likes 6 furlong races and wins within himself today. Going off at the 2 to 5 first choice in a field that dwindled to 4 horses, GGS eased to the lead and apprently did not give it up. Well, although not at Churchill Downs, Bobby Hurley's Dagger will be giving him and his fans some action on Kentucky Derby Saturday. Dagger is entered in the Nassau County Stakes (G3) at Belmont Park's opening weekend for a $200K purse. The race is at 7 furlongs and is for 3 year old fillies. There is some competition in the race, and Dagger has not raced for 2 months, although has been training modestly toward this contest. Expect competition from Carolyn's Cat, convincing winner of the Cicada, and Ready For Fortune who looks to be in the sharpest shape of any of the other fillies in the race.

Any prediction for the Derby, DevilHorse?

DevilHorse

Ymo..

A little redboarding hear..

My top 3 horses for the Derby were Big Brown, Pyro (whom I thought was going to just be out for exercise in his last race at Keeneland), and Colonel John.
Big Woo..They were the favorites. But Big Brown had the wow factor going in. I had an eye on Eight Belles because of another Duke lister's interest in her; a terrible shame that she broke down after finishing second. Having witnessed Ruffian's demise, this is about as awful a loss as I've seen on the distaff side (Go For Wand included).

But let's take nothing away from Big Brown. He took the 20th post position, took the scenic tour 4 wide all the way around, and beat all but Eight Belles by 10 lengths. If his feet hold up, he'll win the Triple Crown!! As dominating a performance as you will ever see in the Kentucky Derby. A 4th lifetime start for a horse that they thought was a turf horse no less; note that his first race was on the turf and his second race was taken off the turf and he did even better.

Note that Denis of Cork was last and finish 3rd. If the field is small for the Preakness, he could make it interesting.

If folks like the subject, we can talk it up before the Preakness, although not a Duke angle in there.

Robert Hurley's Megaladon is in for a Friday turf race (#2) at Belmont, but he is entered for Main Track Only (MTO), this means that if the race is taken off the turf because of bad weather (a distinct possibility when one considers todays advanced weather report) only then will the horse race.

Here is the Past Performance courtesy of Brisnet. If you're handicapping at home, remember that the track would be sloppy if Megalodon were to be racing.

In a week where the greatest fears of horse owners were shared with the world at the Kentucky Derby, Megalodon, according to the race chart, broke down in the stretch on what had to be a muddy track (it's been pouring all day up here); it is not obvious if the horse lost its life or not. I don't know the condition of the horse; I'll report if I hear something on the replay.

Here is the chart:

The Brisnet chart call was word for word the same statement.

Hopefully the jockey is OK. Our best thoughts for the horse and its connections in what is surely a very trying and difficult time.

There was no mention of the break down on the replay, and the event was totally off camera. The horse did not finish, as per the chart. I'd have to conclude that the horse was pulled up in an incident that did not involve other horses. Hopefully the horse survives and will have another day of gamefull employement at or away from the track.

Also, there are a few Hurley or Devil Eleven bought 2 year olds that I'm attempting to track. They were bought over the past year or two at horse sales, and I happen to catch the name in the sales results. Thoroughbred owners don't usually name their yearlings before they are sold, so you have to find ways to figure out what the name is before they start or you can't track the horse (easily). I tripped across one of the horses, having recently been named. Gold Plated is a 2 year old filly by Touch Gold and out of the Capote mare Sira. She was purchased for 185K in November of 2006 as a weanling (less than a year old) by Devil Eleven stable. Hopefully we will see her stop soon. I have the breeding, but not the name, of 2 other 2 year olds that I'll continue to watch for :D

I hope to offer Preakness comments later in the week.

I found the following from the NY Daily News..

2ND: Favorite True Rebel prevailed but Megalodon broke his left front leg in deep stretch and was euthanized. Jockey Rajiv Maragh escaped serious injury and will ride today.

This is indeed sad news for Megalodon and his racing team. These horses are bred to race and they do it willingly. It will no doubt take a few weeks for the team to recover from this jolt in their routine; horse people love and care for their animals. But there will be another race, although it may be a while before the sky seems quite as blue or the air smells as good as they remember. Rest easy Megalodon.

File this under "A blind squirrel finds a nut now and then", today I noticed that Belmont was having their first two year old race of the year. When I checked out the breeding on the entries, low and behold, one of the horses that Bobby Hurley purchased for $150K at Keenland last September was entered to race.
CHEECA STORM, bred in partnership by Devil Eleven Stable, and bought outright at the sale by Robert M (aka Bobby) Hurley, will make her first start tomorrow at Belmont this Thursday (5/15/08) in Race 2.
I can't explain the name; it is obvious that Bobby named the horse, since it was sold without a name. Cameron Crazies it is not. ;)
The #2 and #3 horses have a race under her belt (a definite advantage for these youngsters), #2 and #6 have the sharpest works, but it is a crap shoot. Owners have the inside knowledge on what it is that they have so we'll see.

What are the odds that that squirrel will run into 2 nuts within hours of one another, but it happened. Just 40 or so miles from Belmont is Monmouth Park where Go Time will be making her first start. Go Time has interesting breeding. She is by Hurley's sire Songandaprayer, out of a mare named.... Jay's Will...:D

Go Time is owned in partnership by Devil Eleven Stable (and others) and was bred in partnership with Devil Eleven Stable (and the same group of others), but appears to have been run through the April 2008 April Ocala Breeders Sale and was bought (back) for $24K. Not very good when you consider that Songandaprayer's stud fee is $25K, and it costs a good deal more to raise and prep a yearling and to get it to sale. Surely this team has at least $40K to $50K into this horse already.

The horse is trained by James Ryerson and will be racing in the 3rd race at Monmouth on Friday. My guess is that Bobby will be at Belmont where the stakes will be higher, but who knows.

Your clarification brings up a question I have always had, how many horses can a trainer or owner really deal with?

DevilHorse
05-16-2008, 07:02 AM
Cheeca Storm had an average start to her career. She finished 5th in a field of 6. Not to fret. Many a good horse have started from these humble beginings as they learn the ropes of their profession.
Here are the results, courtesy of the Daily Racing Form.

http://www.drf.com/drfPDFChartRacesIndexAction.do?TRK=BEL&CTY=USA&DATE=20080515&RN=2

As per YmoBeThere's question, there really are no pat answers. It really depends on how hands on the owner or trainer wants to be. Let's talk trainers for example. A mega-trainer like Todd Pletcher has about 200 horses of various ages racing at 4 or 5 different racing venues (so as not to compete with each other on a day in and day out basis) and he relies on assistant trainers at those venues to provide daily hands-on and daily input to the nominal/head trainer. Todd Pletcher did this when he was an assistant trainer for D. Wayne Lukas. Still there are others who profer a small group of horses so they can see what they are training; Carl Nafzager, trainer of last year's Kentucky Derby winner Street Sense, is an excellent example; he only had a few horses for a few owners.

Owners similarly can have many horses with many trainers. This can be a pastime or it can be a business. You can see that there are many thoroughbred farms that also race horses. For example, Frank Stronach who runs and owns Magna Enterprises, which runs several Race Tracks, owns many many horses with different trainers. His farm enterprise is Adena Springs Stables. They have a web page that shows all of their race horses that are racing and their past performance. I'll include below their Briswatch page so you can see the many trainers and venues that Stronach's horses race in:
http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/briswatch.cgi/public/Stronach/STRONAC/9999/owner_summary.html
For STronach, he has many mares that he wants bred to stallions that are just right from his perspective, and they may be in particular states with breeding programs that are lucrative only to state bred horses. So he stays with local trainers.
And then there are small owners who can afford only a couple of horses.

Now for the questions you didn't ask..

How many owners can a horse have?
- in a lifetime - many. A horse can change hands every week; this actually happens during claiming race wars.
- for a particular race - could be as many as 100; there are partnerships out there where a stable can divide a horse between as many people as you could want. I think at one point the great horse Curlin had 70 owners with part of the pie as a result of a legal action. Perfectly permissable.

BTW, even if you own a horse or two for fun, you always treat it like a business for tax purposes.:D

Thanks for all the insight Devilhorse! Why would so many owners want a stake for a particular race? Essentially, aren't they gambling on the horse's performance for that race? Wouldn't it be easier to just step up to the window? Or would that not be allowed for some reason?

DevilHorse

Thanks for all the insight Devilhorse! Why would so many owners want a stake for a particular race? Essentially, aren't they gambling on the horse's performance for that race? Wouldn't it be easier to just step up to the window? Or would that not be allowed for some reason?

For those horses that change hands often, it would be a scenario where a horse is in the claiming ranks and is in really great shape. For example, if I had a $25K claiming horse (you can purchase it for $25K if you put in a 'claim' on the day it races) and it races for $20K, then for the thoroughbred economics suggest that a superior horse that is likely to win each week will cost you perhaps $1K in total bills, then you get 60% of the $20K purse (that's $12K minus the trainer's 10% and jockey's 10% leaves you with $9.6K). So you would net $8.6K each week if you buy a guaranteed winning $25K claimer for each week. You could buy a $40 claimer and drop him into the $25K claiming ranks and hope no one claims him for a week, but you might lose $15-$9.6 = $5.4K on that deal. Of course, if the horse breaks down or finishes 2nd or worse, the economic model starts to break down too.

As to why people would want to own a horse in the first place? People like to own a "piece" of a horse. It gives bragging rights, access to inside information (you or the head of syndicate talks with trainer about tactics/health/near-term plans), access to the barn area and and the backstretch (because you must have a state racing license which is shown to enter), the right enter the hallowed ground that is the winners circle should your steed win the race, and to have your mug in the photo that hangs on your wall commemorating a great day and the culmination of a lifelong dream. 1% of a horse does all of that. Cashing a ticket holds a pale comparison to the feeling of owning a race horse.

About partnerships, in cases where you have a lot of owners of a horse, usually it is partnerships on a horse. The race people intelligently only allow up to 4 racing interests on the program, to be listed per horse, so you have to start grouping people into stable names once you get above 4 owners. With a group name like Devil Eleven Stable, you don't have to have the same percentage owners or even the same people on any individual horse; they just use the umbrella name.

Hope this is useful

Go Time won her first lifetime start at Monmouth Park this afternoon in a sloppy but sealed race course. The chart states that she was bumped at the start and drew clear at the end.
Here is the chart, courtesy of the Daily Racing Form:
http://www.drf.com/drfPDFChartRacesIndexAction.do?TRK=MTH&CTY=USA&DATE=20080516&RN=3

But hold your enthusiasm for a second. The chart comes up a little short on ink when you look at it. This race was a 2 furlong race. Quarter horses go further (they really do go more than a quarter mile). What's up with that? Okay, the race was nominally slated for that distance, but these horses will not make any more money or gain any reputation in 2 furlong races. The horses had their prep workouts at distances longer than the race; you never see that. I can't even say Monmouth has ever run such a race, so this could be a track record for all I know. This was a good workout and nothing more. But the money is good

And One more unrelated Item...
As an alum of Duke Physics, I would take note of today's Google Title Design (http://www.google.com/) (http://www.google.com/search?q=first+laser&hl=en ) honoring the invention of the Laser that is credited to Noble Laureate and fellow Duke Physics alum Charles Townes (he got a Masters at Duke in 1937).

BTW, how unprepared are the thorougbred people for a 2 furlong race? The local paper (Asbury Park Press) that published this article, publishes their own race chart of this race. On it they show the position of the horse at the milestone marks of the race like 1/4 mile, half mile, top of the stretch. So, they have the horse's position at the half mile post.....in a quarter mile race. Is this one of Einstein's time reversal thought experiments or something?????

Go Go Shoot is in with some nice colts, while picking up 6 lbs of weight; this will be a challenge. There is other early speed in the race so it will be difficult to fight it out and survive if that is the strategy. Also, you might notice that on this horse, it is registered to Robert E. Hurley and not Robert M. Hurley. I wonder if this is a mistake in registration or John Goldthorpe is intent on partnering with all of the Robert Hurley's out there who are part of the game.:)

On another note, the horse racing world is surely disappointed (many of them) that there is no triple crown winner, yet again. But in the words of Tom Hanks in "A League Of Their Own" ..."but, the hard is what makes it great!" As with many many races, the horse's connection will be faced with the sometimes difficult task of trying to diagnose a poor performance with little feedback. I'm sure the horse was scoped after the race to see if he had an infection, cold, or perhaps bled (not as bad as it sounds). Hopefully we will see the old Big Brown later this year on the track in an attempt to get horse of the year honors.

On another note, the horse racing world is surely disappointed (many of them) that there is no triple crown winner, yet again.

I'm not sure if the racing world is disappointed... My guess is that many followers of the sport are quietly relieved that Dutrow [given his shady past] did not stake a claim to Triple Crown history (wishing no offense to Big Brown, who is a beautiful horse)...

Every time Dutrow opened his mouth in the past week, telling the world about how a Big Brown win in the Belmont was essentially a foregone conclusion, I just shook my head... Talk about tempting the weaux gods... And the horse racing I grew up with was a sport filled with superstitious folks [particularly jockeys and trainers], making Dutrow's pronouncements even more stunning...

I liked Desormeaux's reaction... The fact that Big Brown, a truly dominant 3-year-old in perhaps the weakest Belmont field in recent memory, failed to win the Triple Crown simply makes you wonder about those 11 horses who succeeded, and what extraordinary horses they were...

Personally, I was far more disappointed when Barbaro went down to injury... Big Brown being eased in the stretch somehow felt like fate thumbing its nose at Dutrow...

Carlos
06-08-2008, 10:12 AM
I'm not sure if it simply tempting the weaux gods that sealed Big Brown's fate. Dutrow's decision to skip that regular steroid injection last month may have been a bigger factor in the horse's disappointing showing.

OTOH, there has to be someone out there who decided to take a chance and place a bet on a 38-1 long shot so you know there's a few Da' Tara fans today.

Papa John - I'd have to think more people were rooting for the horse than against the horse, despite the myriad of negative articles about the trainer or owners. Certainly it is an american habit to tear down those who are on top, and who would know better than we in Duke blue, but it is the horse that was at the core of this and not the connections. You can always find something not to root for I suppose. But I have to admit, horses like Smarty Jones were a lot easier to root for than Big Brown.

Carlos - Considering the Zito trained Birdstone (who beat Smarty Jones previously) it was better than a totally blind hunch bet that the horse could have a shot to beat Big Brown. Guys like Zito and H. Allen Jerkins are always there to make horse races.:D

Just to expand on my hastily typed comments from before, the racing game needs heroes and personalities to help connect to the general public. You may not have liked Dick Dutrow's prediction of a triple crown, but he was out there and made it interesting. It is always more interesting when there is someone out there to beat, good or bad (from your perspective). I liked seeing the extra news coverage that this horse has received and I'm disappointed that he had a less than steller effort, but you can't blame the horse; he was surely trying. Most horses on that level try their best. Let's not forget, that these days in racing, the horses that race in the triple crown are not nearly as experienced as horses that have been in that series in previous years. Having only a few starts before entering the KY Derby seems to be more the norm these days, where 20 years ago horses would usually have 8 to 10 easy. So improvement due to maturity of the other horses can be expected, such as we saw with the winner, uh what's his name..

Greetings,

It has been relatively quiet on the racing front (could it be that we were on the 4th page of this forum ), but I thought I would get an update out.

First, it has not been absolutely quiet. I discovered this weekend that a Devil Eleven stable horse, previously unknown to me, raced at Monmouth Park this weekend and finished 6th in a maiden race. The horse is a 3 year old gelding that was originally purchased by Jack Goldthorpe (who is also an explicit partner on Tiger Woodman and perhaps others) at the Keeneland racing stock sale in November of 2007 for $16K. This was his 5th race. Keep those eyes and ears open for other Hurley associated horses for posting in this thread.

Lastly, a number of Hurley and Devil Eleven's young and old horses have been training, which suggests they will be entered shortly in races.....or not. Names that come to mind are: Cameron Crazies, Stream Cat, Cheeca Storm, and Go Time.

We'll hopefully see some action in coming weeks.

Dagger is entereed to race in a $55K race at Delaware this Saturday (6/28/08) in the 8th race. I'll post if/when Past Performance sheets are available.

I noticed that Songandaprayer, Bob Hurley's stallion who is now standing in Kentucky at Walmac Farm, has the 4th highest total of money won for two year old so far this season. He has $217K banked, which is behind $258K for Swiss Yodeler, Lion Heart ($241K), and Exchange Rate ($220K). If the name Lion Heart is familiar, that is Cameron Crazies' sire. Songandaprayer is also (apparently) leading the country in the number of winners with 10, followed by Swiss Yodeler and Lion Heart with 7. These numbers are not likely to hold for the year, with the majority of races yet to be run for the year, but it is a very nice start for this stallion. The connections have to be tickled pink, or perhaps ... royal blue.

To 1Devil:
Because of the link to Bobby Hurley and the interest in his ongoing horse racing operation, the concensus as I have understood it is that this place was OK to keep the thread. It seems updates to what Basketball alumni are doing is fair game for the Main Board. We've kept it to a single thread rather than a new Topic per horse or race to keep things concise. One or two moderators do frequent the thread, so I think we have the blessing of those who administer the site. If there's a change in thinking, I expect I'll be hearing from them. The aim is to provide timely updates so interested parties can perhaps catch a live race on the internet or otherwise to enhance their experience and connection. You're welcome to join in too.;)

Coming off her maiden victory in her second start, and going into stakes competition, this will no doubt be a challenging start.

Go Time is in to go for Monday June 30. I'll post a Past Performance pointer if it presents itself in the coming days. He is entereed at Delaware Park, in a $50K allowance race. There aren't as many trainers with horses in at Delaware who put their information up on Brisnet's free service, but hopefully we'll get a shot.

One of the interesting rules that exists in Thoroughbred Racing is the liberal nature of the entry rules. A horse is allowed to enter their horses in multiple races at the same time, without penalty or difficulty (not the case with other horse racing types).

Dagger has been double dipped in a similar fashion. As noted in a recent post, he is enterred in a stakes race at Delaware Park for $55K. But Dagger is also entered at Monmouth Park on Saturday (6/28/08) in race 9, the Boiling Spring Stakes. Here is the Past Performanc sheet:

Cameron Crazies fell short in her stakes debut. She had the lead for a half mile but tired. You'll note in her past performances that she tired a bit in her maiden win, but held on. She probably needs to get a bit stronger to go with these types of fillies.

So where did Dagger race?
Dagger scratched at Delaware to run at Monmouth.
Unfortunately, it looks as if Dagger finished last at Monmouth.
According to the write-up, Dagger was in the running, but tired.

Gold Plated is ready to make his career debut on 7/11/2008 at the Presque Isle Downs Racino, not too far from Erie PA, in race 1.

The horse was purchased by Devil Eleven and Robert Hurley in November of 2006 at the Keeneland mixed sale as a Weanling (a horse that was just weaned off its mother, and has not yet seen its first new year); it is amazing what you find when you read the sales results. The purchase price for this horse was $185K! The breeding is that it is sired by Touch Gold out of the mare Sira by Capote. Touch Gold offering some stamina, while Capote offering sprint ability.
Sira had career earnings of a bit less than $100K and had 4 wins in 17 starts. Touch Gold was a million dollar winner, by super sire Deputy Minister. Touch Gold has sired some good crops in his first 6 years at stud, although there have been no horses whose names have risen to be household names. The best known ones are: Seek Gold, Composure, Midas Eyes, Mass Media, and Medallist.
More than you wanted to know, no doubt.

Is Gold Plated still owned by Hurley and associates? I don't know. But if the horse runs, we'll be ableto read the ownership connections in the chart. Hopefully I'll be able to find a Past Performance sheet for the race and find out earlier.

Well, I did find a Past Performance sheet and Gold Plated is owned by Twin Creeks Racing Stable, which is not affiliated with Bobby Hurley that I know of. Additionally, the horse shows a sale price of $300K, which also suggests that the horse was resold as a yearling for a nice $105K profit for less than a year's investment, although a considerable risk raising a young horse for a year in a field. The horse is being trained by Steve Assmussen, who trains Curlin amongst others.

Good Luck to the new owners.

Tiger Woodman and Stream Cat are entered at Arlington Park on 7/12/08 in the same race, race 6, the $200K Arlington Handicap, 1 1/4 mile on the Turf. It is a 6 horse field. I'll have the past performance sheet up once it is posted in a day (we will have it).

Sorrento Song is entered at Monmouth Park on 7/11/08 in a 5 1/2 furlong race for a $20K claiming tag and a purse of $14K. It's race #7 on the card.
Not obvious if a past performance sheet will be available.

I note that ownership of Stream Cat shows Fab Oak Stable only. I recall the Stream Cat used to show Robert Hurley's name separately. I'm not sure if Bobby has a piece of that horse or not anymore. He has been friends and partners with the Fab Oak people for a while (recalling the scene in the winner's circle for the Nownownow win in the BC mud race last year). Perhaps an article on the net will clarify things.

For those of you who recall the Breeder's Cup's inaugural 2YO turf race last year, won by Nownownow, I spotted Bobby Hurley in the winner's circle. Nownownow is owned by Fab Oak Stables; this is the same Fab Oak Stables that, at one time, was partners with Hurley on Stream Cat. We will have an indication as to weather Hurley is a participant in Fab Oak Stable if Stream Cat and Tiger Woodman run as an entry in Arlington on Saturday.

In either case, for those who are interested, Nownownow makes his first US start of the year in the Swaps Stakes on Saturday. In the field are early season sensation Colonel John and Preakness Starter Tres Borrachos. Here is the Past Performance sheet, courtesy of Brisnet:

Firstly, Steam Cat is owned by Bobby Hurley in Partnership with Fab Oak Stables and John Goldthorp, according to the race Chart. So that aspect is incomplete in the Past Performance. But what is with the E in Robert E Hurley? I thought his middle initial was M. A mystery to say the least. Perhaps if Bobby reads this list he'll straighten that out with the Jockey Club, or the Clerk of the Course.

Secondly, Stream Cat won today. He won very nicely and was not the favorite. An excellent outing, and for an excellent purse. Congratulations for the connections for finding this spot.

Lastly, Tiger Woodman finished fourth and last. It was not obvious that he was ready for this type of stakes company based on how he was racing before, but he was given a shot, and got a check, so that's not too bad.

One of the rites of summer is the annual trek to either Del Mar or Saratoga. I haven't been to Del Mar, but I was a witness to the Alydar/Affirmed battle a number of times, the first of which was at Saratoga when they were 2 year olds. Many a great 2 year old made their first appearance on Saratoga's ancient oval. The competition is the best, and full fields can be found for most races. If you ever have a chance to attend a race card there, I encourage you to take it in.

Cameron Crazies is entered in the 9th race there on Wednesday July 24th.
The Past Performance can be found at the following URL:

Courtesy of Raceindex, and by the way, for those interested, this is the entire first day race card, so search on "Hurley" and you'll find Race 9 and the horse.

Just a side note, the 9th race is the Schuylerville Stakes. I can recall seeing Weekend Surprise win the Schuylerville many moons ago. For those of you who don't recall her significance, Weekend Surprise is one of the great broodmares of all time (dam of A.P. Indy, Summer Squall, Tiger Ridge, and Honor Grades..all major sires and stakes winners themselves).

Cameron Crazies' don't like to take a back seat to anyone, but in this case it is acceptable. Cameron Crazies (the horse) ran a very game 2nd in the Grade 3 Schuylerville today in a driving rain storm. She broke alertly from the outside, which may have been an advantage since toward the rail looked like a bit of a puddle. She stayed on or near the lead the whole race. Toward the head of the stretch, the eventual winner took over and drew off by 4 lengths, while Cameron Crazies held on to 3rd by a slim nostril.

Here is the race chart, courtesy of the Daily Racing Form:
http://www.drf.com/drfPDFChartRacesIndexAction.do?TRK=SAR&CTY=USA&DATE=20080723&RN=9

A few observations.
The favorite, the 1 horse Ocean Colors, was the 2nd to last foal of the great race mare and Kentucky Derby winner Winning Colors (was definitely not grey though).
It appeared that Cameron Crazies was the only horse in the field that was not on Lasix; I don't know if that explains why CC was the longest shot on the board, but she was. The rule used to be that if a horse bled, and a veterinarian witnessed it (through a scope after a vigorous workout or race) you could be given Lasix and could be entered to race after a short waiting period. It is arguable that all horses bleed a bit when racing, but this is a mockery of the rules. It is a crying shame that 2 year old fillies are on Lasix at this point in their careers. When a horse is on Lasix, on a hot day, the chance of them being in heat distress goes up quite a bit, and you can't just go on and off Lasix every other race; you are either on it or off it.

Stream Cat finished a dissapointing 6th in the Arlington Million today. He was nicely placed in 4th, with the lead pack for most of the race. The pace did not seem to be too fast. He seemed to be blindswitched a bit by Eintstein, but that was brief. SC had no answer once space opened in the lane.

Sorrento Song finished 6th. He threatened for the early part of the race but was steadied and did not threaten there after. From my observations, a lot of Hurley's and Devil Eleven's horses vie early in races and try to hang on; this may be the way they are trained to race, but it is not the recipe for long term winning on a consistent basis IMHO. Some horses are "mad dogs" who can't be rated, but most of them can be trained to relax off the pace. Other than Stream Cat, who races at a higher level, and mostly on grass which invites off the pace tactics, we rarely see off the pace tactics and victories with these horses. Perhaps time to get a new playbook if the same tactic isn't working. I invite differing opinions :)
