From the article linked on the front page:

"Majok, who attends the American International School in Carlingford, Australia (a suburb of Sydney), is ranked among the top-25 players available in the Class of 2008 according to one recruiting service."

Top 25 big man who could come in next year! Could this be the big man who will help us all get along? What's the word?

Top 25 players available doesn't mean top-25 in the nation, it means top 25 of the players who haven't already signed or committed. That's not a lot. Olek Czyz is a more highly regarded prospect.

Majok originally committed to Baylor but backed out. At one time he was regarded as a strong Maryland lean but that may not be the case anymore. Duke would have to make up a lot of ground. Not sure if Duke has any significant interest in him.

Nice article about Majok's high school:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/12/18/AR2007121802109_pf.html

"The Heat plays almost exclusively against prep schools, but its own educational offerings are made clear on an informational tab found on the Heat Web site: Academics (Optional)."

Actually, that's not Majok's HS - he goes to school in Australia and was only in the states playing with the Heat for little over a month for some exposure.

The basketball academy seems like an interesting concept - let the kids get their academics elsewhere. As long as the kids are getting their academics from reputable schools and not some shady diploma mill like say... Christopher Robin Academy (http://espn.go.com/gen/s/2002/0524/1386557.html)... then things would seem to be OK.

^That is bad. I hope UNC didn't know about that when they recruited Cota.

From glancing at a few other articles about him, there isn't a lot noted about his game (though he is listed as 4 star on Scout.com, 6' 9" and long with more of a face-up than down-low game, and some shot blocking ability) but he is from Sudan (Luol Deng's done pretty well, having gone to Duke) and supposedly originally chose Baylor (whom he recently de-committed from) because he'd heard good things about their Law School. I'm merely guessing that means academics are at least somewhat important to him so that's gotta help Duke (who's Law School isn't too shabby either).

A first question would be whether Duke is actually interested in him or still feels confident that they'll likely land a superior player, who better meets Duke's needs, with the scholarship they were considering for Murphy in 2009. If Duke is seriously interested, however late we may be, gotta figure we'd have a chance. However (based on very little information-just stating a hunch) Maryland could be tough if the D.C. area has more of a Sudanese community than Durham and that is particularly important to him.

Anyways, we'll see, but it's fun to learn of new potential prospects and he is somewhat of a special case given that he has re-opened his recruiting relatively late in the game, seemingly not for sketchy reasons.

Go Duke!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Go Devils!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GTHCGTH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Has the AG in the Tar Heel state ever investigated some of the diploma mills, that usually operate under the guise of a religious or "prep" school?

Diploma mill or non-Diploma mill.

Neither Scout or Rivals have Duke listed as recruiting him. Can anyone confirm that Duke is even interested?

Not sure of Duke's interest, either before or after, but Coach K did come to see him play in December. Calhoun and Huggins have reportedly been beating the door down.

^That is bad. I hope UNC [sic] didn't know about that when they recruited Cota.

I'm sure the coaches, if not the administration, did.
