For billybreen or other mac users...

I'm looking for software for note taking, project management, task lists, etc. for work. I've tried out Macjournal and Notebook for personal use but looking for something more professional. Looked into at OmniOrganizer, Soho notes, curio, and a few others.. Anyone have any experience with these products or other recommendations?

Good question. I tend to be very minimalist on note taking, preferring to use TextMate and plain text files, but that's not for everyone. :) I've heard _great_ things about the Omni Suite, particularly OmniOutliner (http://www.omnigroup.com/applications/omnioutliner/), OmniPlan (http://www.omnigroup.com/applications/omniplan/), and OmniFocus (http://www.omnigroup.com/applications/omnifocus/), though I haven't personally used them.

Another tool that may be worth a look for idea management is Yojimbo (http://barebones.com/products/yojimbo/index.shtml). I've seen some nice reviews on that one as well.

Now you're inspiring me to use some of these things. What the heck am I doing using a text editor for note taking and task management in 2008?

A pen and paper still manage to do both of those tasks...pencil if you really need to do some heavy duty editing.

Bah. I fairly frequently need to be able to search through 10s of thousands of words of notes. Relying on my ability to keep track of stuff I physically wrote on would be ugly.

Entourage (http://www.microsoft.com/mac/products/entourage2008/default.mspx#/my_day/)?

Great googly-moogly, that ain't cheap, though!

And whose fault is that? ;)

Would be nice if there was a version of OneNote for the Mac, but the BU hasn't made it happen.

This is exactly my problem..I've tried the pen and paper and plain text approach and though usually sufficient, it's a challenge..would be nice to waste a little less time trying to find, organize and link...

I would like to see a OneNote version for mac as I've had success with that in the past...

I'll check out Yojimbo and Entourage...but the Omni Suite is looking very promising..Thanks..

I've started playing with OmniFocus today for task management. I like it a lot so far. Now, to figure out how to get my company to buy me copies of this, Plan, and Graffle. I think the free Outliner, rather than Pro, is all I'll need.

What about a real word processor for Mac. If I buy, I probably will require one.

Or maybe I'll just run WinXP on the Mac via Bootcamp and transfer what I own to the windows sectors.

C'mon, BB, tell me what you know!

You can always go with MS Office for Mac. Office 2008 has just been announced.

Open Office is freeware that is MS Office (2003/2004) compatible.

Take a look at Apple's iWork suite with Pages application.

TextEdit is included with any Mac you buy. It's a simple test processor that's gotten better at the OS evolves.

I personally use AppleWorks and like it, but that's primarily due to inertia. I should update something more current.

Here's a graph (http://www.macosxhints.com/polls/index.php?qid=wordproc&aid=-1) from a survey on the Macosxhints.com web site.

A quick search at Macupdate.com (http://www.macupdate.com/search.php?arch=all&keywords=word+processing&os=macosx&order=rating) gives some other possibilities. I've never used NisusWriter or Scrivener, but they are apparently well thought of.

I would definitely recommend Parallels or VMWare if you want to run XP. I use Parallels, so I can run XP with Office and any other Windows apps I need at the same time I'm also using native Mac apps. It's a seamless experience with almost no performance hit.

I should have my hands on a copy of Microsoft Office 2008 for the Mac in the next week or so and will definitely give a review then. It looks great so far, hopefully better than Office 2007 for Windows (I don't think the Mac version has that Ribbon monstrosity for a toolbar).
