I was particularly taken by Smith's comment "it was nice that the Blue Devils didn't treat her as if she was sick".

It is an incredibly important thing to remember when visiting someone in the hospital. Being treated as though you are sick is not a good feeling, but most folks don't know what to do when they visit someone who is very ill in a hospital, hospice, or at home. Bring a deck of cards, a checker board and checkers, a simple craft project if the person likes that sort of thing. Doing something interactive removes the awkwardness of simply being there and focusing on the illness. It makes the visit more fun for both the visitor and patient.
