Apparently, Peter Jackson has agreed to produce (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20071218/ap_en_ot/film_the_hobbit), but not direct a film version of the Hobbit. Or more precisely, the story split into 2 films. 5 years ago I might have been pretty psyched about this, now, I'm just not so sure.

I'm not sure this is a 2-movie story. OTOH I guess it would be over 3 hours to do it justice in one film, so maybe.

Did anyone see the animated version of the Hobbit from way back? That was a true classic. And when I say classic, I mean so corny it's hilarious.

Maybe Leonard Nimoy will sing the title song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XC73PHdQX04

Hey, I already inflicted that bit on folks awhile back(at least, I'm assuming that's the ballad of bilbo baggins, since I'm refusing to click on that link).

I'm excited. The backstory is really important to the LOTR trilogy...where did the ring come from? How did Bilbo get it? What exactly befell poor Smeagol to turn him into that?
Jackson is treading a fine line with the fanboy set here, but I believe he'll do a good job, and I'll definitely go see both films. I also expect them both to perform well.
Any word on casting yet? Ian McKellen simply must be Gandalf again.
