I thought some of you who are into tempo-free stats would get a kick out of a new feature on SCACCHoops.com (http://www.scacchoops.com). The idea certainly wasn't mine, as I originally saw it on Big Ten Wonk (http://bigtenwonk.blogspot.com/2007/02/acc-tempo-free-aerial-points-per.html), and they called it a tempo-free aerial. Since John Gasaway went to Basketball Prospectus, I figured I would keep the chart going this year.

Here is a link to our ACC Efficiency Chart (http://www.scacchoops.com/forms/ACCEfficiencyChart.asp), which is a graphical way of seeing which teams are playing well and how they do it.

One thing that is evident is the tiers that are presenting themselves by reading from the bottom right to the top left. The farther a team is to the bottom right, the more efficient the team is at scoring points per possession and defending opponents from scoring points per possession.

Tier 1

Duke
UNC

Tier 2

Virginia
Clemson
Miami
FSU

Tier 3

BC
Virginia Tech
Wake Forest
Maryland

Tier 4

NC State
Georgia Tech

Keep in mind that strength of schedule certainly plays a factor here, but it will be interesting to follow the chart as the season goes along. I hope to animate the chart at some point and see some trends that teams display as well.

So, what do you think?

Interesting. I like that representation of the efficiency numbers... it reminds me of a graph we use at work called a four-blocker (a Six Sigma tool). I am much more prone to an interest in college basketball graphs than in works graphs. :)
