What's this, now?

I haven't heard tell of this. Are you sure it wasn't his son Skip, current coach at ECU?

Either way, Lou Holth at Duke would be utterly thenthational.

It is not Skip it is Lou.

Lou Holtz says it all (http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/authors/l/lou_holtz.html).

...from back when he was coach at AR:
1. When the Hogs beat TCU (I think) to become eligible for the 1978 Orange Bowl, the game had to be stopped because the fans threw oranges onto the field. After the game, when reporters asked Coach Holtz what he thought of the incident, he said, "At the time, I was just glad we weren't going to the Gator Bowl."

2. At the beginning of the '78 Orange Bowl, the Sooners came onto the field like they were too cool for school. The Hogs came tearing onto the field like they were on fire. When asked what he had told his team to get them so fired up, the response was, "I told them that the last eleven out had to start."

As a footnote, to those of you who don't know, Arkansas upset Oklahoma in the 1978 Orange Bowl. The national media gave us no chance at all. The tone for the game was set when the opening kickoff (AR) sailed through the center of the uprights. I don't think I've seen anything like it since. The final score was 31-6, and Razorback fans still talk of the game in reverent tones. If Oklahoma had won, they would've been national champs. But they didn't, and they weren't. HAH!

He brought up one thing that has been greatly needed on a Duke football field. he said:

Bring your pain pills because we are going to hit you from the time you get off the bus until you get back on the bus.

Beggars can't be choosers and all that, but Lou seems like a relatively short term plan. It's hard to imagine him coaching for long.

3 that I loved:

I can't believe that God put us on this earth to be ordinary.
Lou Holtz

On this team, we're all united in a common goal: to keep my job.
Lou Holtz

A lifetime contract for a coach means if you're ahead in the third quarter and moving the ball, they can't fire you.

Point granted, but man...what a short-term plan. Remember what he did at South Carolina?

If he is interviewing more for his son skp that makes some sense. But if he is interviewing for himself I'm worried that we could be looking at what we almost went through when we hired Ted Roof. At the time we also looked at Bobby Ross who ended up at Army and only lasted 3 years. Lou is a good man and has been a good coach in the past but we don't want a short term/quick fix. We need a coach who will hopefully last a while. Duke doesn't need or want to be looking for another HC in a few years. We can't keep going through this every few years looking for a new Coach. We need someone who will improve our program and hopefully stay for a good amount of time.

Today's Charlotte Observer says that Skip Holtz is "being suggested to Duke." Lou is not mentioned.

Please don't hire Lou Holtz. I don't trust him to maintain a clean program, he wouldn't be a long-term solution, and he's just plain annoying as a TV commentator. I don't like going 1-11, but I haven't really lost sleep over it. I would lose sleep over NCAA violations.

I'm guessing that Lou is interviewing to push his son Skip ... Skip is a viable Duke candidate, but reportedly he has a clause in his contract that he can't interview for other jobs until after ECU's bowl game.

If Lou is really a candidate ... ugh.

I hate to be a wet blanket about some of these guys you want to get excited about (I still have the bruises from pointing out that Rick Neuweasal is a chronic cheater), but I should point out that the last three schools where Lou coached -- Minnesota, Notre Dame and South Carolina -- were all placed on probation for violations committed while he was the coach.

He's 71 years old ... he did have two good years early in his tenture at South Carolina, but his last three teams were 16-19.

I'd rather have Skip ...

This must be a ruse. Interviewing Holtz would be on par with the consideration of hiring Adolph Rupp after Foster left.

3 other Lou quotes that weren't listed:

1. I was unaware that booster was paying our players.
2. I was unaware that person in our financial aid office was paying our players.
3. I was unaware that I paid that player.
