FWIW, I don't view UK as a rival, at least not at the same level as UNC. I don't like what happened in '78, but it doesn't rise to the level of rivalry. Occasional loathe, fine. But a rivalry? Certainly not at the same level as UNC.

Let's put it this way: I still root for Weber St because they beat UNC; I can't say the same for Gardner-Webb.

That's exactly how I feel about it. From my perspective, being amid UK fans with her every so often is just another example of "they hate us more than we hate them." All of her Kentucky friends have been like, "Wow, dating a Duke guy? That's rough."
In contrast, all of my Duke friends have said things more along the lines of, "Nice work man, she's a catch." No mention whatsoever of UK. It's definitely been interesting.

That brings up another thing I haven't thought of...perhaps I've gotten used to dealing with this sort of thing? I have several close friends who are kuralonna fans, as well as State, Climpsun, and kuralonna grads in my family. I love those people and just have to deal with their sporting misguidedness. I suppose it has prepared me well to deal effectively with an otherwise delightful girl whose athletic loyalties we'll just say don't mesh with mine.

Well, I went to grad school at UNC. I, um..., "dated" (polite euphemism) one UNC grad there. I also "dated" a Duke grad more than once - because the Duke grad was clearly superior. :D

My brother has repeatedly invoked the Laettner thing around her, to the above effect. Personally, I am keeping my mouth shut and laughing on the inside while he does it. That way, I get to enjoy the response without getting in trouble.

My exact same experience. UK fans are forever stuck in 1992. They see it as evidence God does not exist and still haven't exorcised that demon. Here in Kentucky, they just *hate* Duke and believe the Lax boys got away with something because of their money and high-powered lawyers. I know, I know. They see and hear only what they want to see and hear.

Well, I married a non-Duke fan, and we've made it over 20 years. He like Ohio State football, and he's now a Duke Basketball fan (to be fair, I haven't given him much of a choice on the Duke fandom thing -- besides, my whole family bleeds Duke blue!).

I have to respond in terms of my children dating rivals. My daughter is a freshman at NCSU. My son's a junior in high school. Many of their friends go to rival schools -- most to State, but a few misguided souls find their way to the wrong shade of blue. Some of the kids went because it's the best school for their major (pharmacy, for one) and have NO allegiance to the school (preferring their State or Duke loyalties). Others were terrific kids in high school, and I'd have no objection to my kids dating them. But now that they are Tarheels...well, both my kids and I have had to rethink them as potential suitors. :) I'll leave open the possibility that it could happen, but it's very, very unlikely. Highly unlikely. Practically impossible.

It was somewhat surreal, I looked around to see if there were any Duke fans in the area in case things got out of hand, but somehow I was in a pocket of UK-dom. In the end, they were too drunk to kill me, but saying those two little words set off a larger response than I expected.

Later in the evening, at the start of overtime, the obese, drunk Kentucky fan in the row behind us fell onto my now-wife. His mortified wife dragged him home. Lucky for him he didn't see the end of the game. :)

I have to respond in terms of my children dating rivals.

My daughter, who went to Appalachian State in Boone and still lives up that way but is a HUGE Duke fan and Cameron Crazie at heart, is engaged to a Boone area native. His only fault is his family is mostly carolina fans, although he's a musician and not really into sports (and he goes to school in Tennessee, but not at Tennessee). I took them to last Saturday's Michigan game - his first time in Cameron. He loved it and now understands J's passion. He doesn't know it yet, but his Christmas presents will consist of several appropriate wardrobe items!

I come from a family of all Duke alumni (6 people, 7 degress; everyone has at least one). I've been happily married to a Tar Heel from a Tar Heel family (5 people, 7 UNC degrees) for 16+ years. Mixed marriages can work. Of course, my wife is not a big sports fan anyway. She likes to go to games, if at all, to socialize and see what other people are wearing. We have fun with it.

I've dated Tar Holes and found them to be sort of ugly when it came to the sports side of things. Thus it really depends on the person. I'm open to it because life is too short, but I'd rather date a Duke fan.

I don't want to go to Duke games with a non-Duke fan as I'll spend the whole time wondering if he's enjoying himself. And, if I went to the Dump on the Hump with a Tar Hole...yeah, just don't see that happening unless they are playing one of my alma maters.

I say I don't believe in mixed marriages. Caveat, I suppose it could work if one of the two was not a big sports fan. I am a big sports fan, it could never work. I married a Dukie. I thought it was love at first sight and when he told me he knew our mutual friend from Duke, well, done deal.

Considering that I'm engaged to a Carolina grad, whose been a Tarheel fan since she moved to Durham in '93 -- I guess it's not that important. :cool: (In full disclosure: she attended Duke for a year, left for Carolina nursing, is the daughter of a late-Duke faculty member and works at DUMC.)

Now, if she were a Michigan* or Kentucky fan, I probably wouldn't have dated her. ;)
