Arkansas newspapers (Democrat-Gazette, NW Times, AR Business) are reporting that Grobe (Wake Forest) has accepted the head coaching job at Arkansas. If finalized it means 1. Duke won't have to worry about facing Grobe, but Wake will now be looking at a similar pool of candidates (to Duke) for head coach. Duke should finalize soon on Johnson or move on to Broadway, imo.

If this report is true, a good man, in my opinion, has officially lost his mind. Why these coaches who've had great success at programs where the fan base is incredibly patient and loves a mere winning season think going to the psychotic fan bases of places like the SEC and Notre Dame are going to be worth it is beyond me.

If Grobe moved on to coach a UVA or an Arizona or somewhere in which the fan base didn't check your cell phone records when they're mad at you, this is a completely understandable move. Otherwise, does money really talk that loud?

Pratt has it right -- Grobe did take the Arkansas job (doubling his salary), but after a long conversation with Wake AD Ron Wellman, he changed he mind.

He's staying at Wake. I don't know if he gets a raise, but even if he does, it won't be for anything close to what Arkansas would have paid.

The entire episode should illustrate once again that Wellman is the best AD in the ACC. When we do a coaching search, we throw out the names of all kinds of candidates ... but do we factor in the impact of the guy doing the hiring?

Anybody else not surprised that Joe Alleva couldn't (apparently) convince Paul Johnson to come to Duke? Anybody else think Ron Wellman would have had better luck?

Oh well, at least we don't have to worry about Wellman going after Johnson for Wake.

I find Arkansas to be an intriguing opening. It's well known that they are willing to offer a major amount of money for a quality coach. They've certainly mentioned with some big names (Butch Davis, Jim Grobe, Tommy Bowden). Also, there is the opinion among many SEC fans that Arkansas has some of the best, if not the best facilities in the entire conference. You're in a good location for recruiting, being near Texas and the other southern states (if you can convince recruits to come to Fayetteville, Arkansas). A large fan base where you don't have to compete with loyalty to other teams in the state. The signs seem to be there for a coach to have great success, just comes down to who wants to go there.

Oh well, would have been nice to have a weaker Wake. Smart decision by Grobe however.
