View Full Version : This Week in the ACC - 12/2-12/8 (including ACC/Big10)

It's ACC/Big 10 week plus conference play on the weekend. ACC is a slight underdog, although each conference is a favorite in 7 games (every home team is favored, per Pomeroy). Big activity for early December. At least the mid-week games are on real networks; sadly, like many others, the only watching of ACC games I will be doing this weekend is via the box score.

Can anyone explain why Illinois sucks so bad? Maybe they’ll come back in this game but they look so bad and they’re not playing a really good team. The state produces good prospects. Northwestern isn’t much competition for recruits. It’s not like they’re a football school. They’ve been good at basketball in the past. Why are they so bad now?

In a way, they're the South Carolina of the Big Ten. Not a perfect analogy, but not invalid either. They can't quite seem to break through the tradition of the Bigs in hoops....with a few exceptions.....and are a long way from breaking through the B10 traditional powers in FB.

Well it's #1 versus #4 tonight in the ACC-Big Ten challenge. Only, it's not Duke vs. Michigan State -- it's Louisville vs. Michigan. Interesting first month of the season.

One hopes they will be rusty. Their last game was 11/28 I believe. That's a long layoff or a long time to prepare.

That UM/UL game is not a ringing endorsement for the quality of college basketball this year. I really hope for the sake of the sport that neither is really a top-5 team. Awful basketball both ways.

Yikes, it's 18-28 at halftime? College basketball has been rough to watch, thus far. Just a mediocre product.

This is legitimately bad basketball, and unfortunately I don't expect that to change starting at 9:30.

Definitely a down year. Few stars - young teams. Folks will tune in come March but until then - a bit of a mess.

One big reason they can’t recruit in hoops (also football) is admissions standards for athletes - they won’t accept athletes who only meet minimal NCAA standards. When is the last time Illinois recruited a top Chicago basketball prospect? I think it’s been a pretty long time.

From a Chicago magazine article in October: http://www.chicagomag.com/city-life/October-2019/How-Illini-Sports-Got-So-Mediocre/

Unlike other big state schools, Illinois has been unwilling to give athletes, who put in hours upon hours a week outside of the classroom, a break on admissions standards. According to a 2013 story by sportswriter Loren Tate of Champaign-Urbana’s News-Gazette, a top football coach once expressed interest in the Illinois job, on the condition he be allowed to admit any player approved by the NCAA Eligibility Center, which keeps a list of athletes who meet minimal academic standards for Division I universities. That was a big nope from the U of I administration, which wasn’t willing to adjust its standards for even five football players out of a freshman class of 7,000.

This is very hard to believe, and I wonder why there hasn't been a voter referendum in Illinois to change the practice.

ACC tied 4-4 in the Challenge. Duke is now 19-2. We need 4 wins. We did our part; now do your part, UVA, NCSU, and OSU.

Would anyone have guessed that Wake is 12-5 in this event given how they've been for a decade?

FSU and Cuse, with long time coaches, laid eggs. Duke has been the best team in this event from either league by leaps and bounds. And NO, I would never have guessed Wake 12-5 in this.

UVa will win. No doubt in my mind. That defense, especially this early in the season, is too good and confuses too many teams.

On the flip side, UVa's offense is really, really, really ugly. I mean, this is a team that shoots less than 50% from 2 and 25% from 3. They also average 53 FGA a game (compare that to Duke's 64 FGA).

Hmm, I'm agnostic on the "Carolina fake injury" narrative that Duke fans (and others) complain about, but I'm surprised y'all aren't betting that Anthony will go for 35 tonight.

Definitely no official word that I can see on this yet, as of the time of this post.

Expect more of the same. Even as a UVA fan, I can tell this is going to be a loooong season if we can't get at least 1 or 2 guys to step up and shoot the 3ball at a decent volume and percentage.

We were 4-24 (16.7%) from 3 today, bringing us to a total of 38-160 (23.8%) on the season. That is BEYOND awful. The absolute lowest 3pt% in the last 5 years was 25.2% by Savannah State in 2015. Even with the line back an extra foot and change, I can't imagine we'll continue to shoot this poorly. There are DEFINITELY no Kyle Guy/Hunter/Jerome level shooters on this team, but there are guys who have proven capable at other levels that are shooting LESS than 20% on decent volume right now. It sure seems like at this point there's a giant mental block moreso than lack of shooting ability they're going to have to figure out how to break through. If they don't, we're going to eventually see every team just play a 2-3 with all 5 defenders with at least one foot in the paint at all times, literally daring us to shoot from further than 15 feet. It's going to get much, MUCH worse I'm afraid if we don't snap out of this funk. Maybe a nice long exam break is just what the Dr ordered to get these guys to "reset" mentally, b/c right now, they're struggling in a way I would have thought impossible.

I wouldn't have been shocked by a 30ish% 3pt team. But 23%? Yikes! With our D this is going to lead to ALL kinds of games in the 30s/40s/50s for both sides depending on the caliber of opponent.

I'll add one more thing to my last post here, that's a little more "Duke-centric". The UVA team got their first taste of what I'd refer to as "the Duke Effect" tonight. That Purdue team and crowd treated the game tonight like it was a national title game. Our guys showed up with average (at best) intensity and just got blown away when Purdue hit some huge threes early and got all the momentum that they NEVER relinquished. It really looked like our guys were not mentally prepared for the "punch in the mouth" Purdue was there to deliver and the energy/intensity from the crowd.

I can honestly say, I've never seen a team and fanbase SO hyped to beat UVa. That was crazier than our biggest games at VT... and I'm pretty sure this is the effort/intensity Duke gets in EVERY road game. Tough. Oh well, maybe ultimately it'll prepare us better for bigger games down the road.

There are 4 outcomes that matter to me during the Challenge:
1) Duke wins
2) uNC loses
3) Maryland loses
4) ACC wins

That last one is a distant 4th, and it will always take a backseat to number 2. If the ACC has to lose the Challenge for uNC to lose, that's a price I'll happily pay.

Sure seems like it. But even Anthony isn't all that efficient. He clearly is the best player on that team, but he needs to be both efficient and others have to score for UNC to be effective. Tonight, neither has happened and it's a recipe for a blowout home loss.

Roy with a classic sub-in-a-whole-lineup-of-walkons move to show how upset he is with his players. They brought solid energy and briefly closed the deficit to single digits, getting the crowd into it. And classic Roy follows that up with bringing back the starters for them to promptly resume the beat down and drop behind by 20+. Dadgummit.

MAN, that was a satisfying one. OSU just absolutely carved the Heels up in the second half. Tough for them to lose Bacot in the first half. That looked PAINFUL. Best wishes to him; an ankle twist that bad (https://s3media.247sports.com/Uploads/Assets/513/554/9554513.jpg) is pretty brutal. That said, I don't think he would have had all that much impact on the outcome. People will bring up the rebounding margin, but that seemed primarily due to the fact that UNC missed 8 zillion more shots rather than to OSU dominating the glass. The bigger problem for UNC was the static offense, which really did devolve for long stretches into "Cole Anthony please do something to rescue this possession" mode. (On the note of Anthony, he's definitely a terrifically talented player, but, if I'm an NBA scout, his poor finishing inside is a bit worrying. Whatever is wrong with his ankle at this point could be a huge factor there, of course.)

Regardless, I think we match up well with the Heels this year. Their big-man depth could be an issue for us if Carey/Javin get into foul trouble (of course, if all their bigs are hurt, as they are now, this problem isn't relevant). Otherwise, though, I think that a lot of the MSU gameplan (blitzing the talented PG to force others make plays, in particular) will apply pretty well to this year's UNC offense.

Bacot is pretty good too. If his ankle injury is serious UNC could be in for a long December. They have some tough games. I’d say Brooks and Robinson are also ACC starter level. Everyone else is like 8th or 9th man on a typical UNC team.

Not even close. 2010 UNC was dreadful. Carolina is still a top-25 team.

If bacot’s injury is significant or if Anthony ever gets injured for any extent of time I can see this being a middle-of-the-ACC 8 seed, though.

Omg. Just watching Sports Center and apparently Roy complained about a 9:30 tipoff being unreasonable!? This is based on subtitles at the bar for dinner, so maybe (hopefully) I missed something.

Couple thoughts: First, OSU also tipped off at the same time as uNC a few hundred miles away from home. Second , Duke tipped off at MSU at the same time, daggumit, and still played basketball. Third GTHCGTH.

Couple things....first, a 9:30 tip is unreasonable.....and I think K would agree with that. Second, while I didn't hear the clip, I doubt he was using it as a reason why they lost. More of a general complaint. I think you're over reading this. Third, Roy was likely not comparing results with Duke's result. Totally irrelevant.

I mean enjoy the smackdown for what it was. And it was epic. Won me 500 on the Degenerate Gambling contest.

Sure seems like it. But even Anthony isn't all that efficient. He clearly is the best player on that team, but he needs to be both efficient and others have to score for UNC to be effective. Tonight, neither has happened and it's a recipe for a blowout home loss.

Agreed, Anthony actually has a sub-100 offensive rating so far this season, in large part because he's only shooting 38% on two-pointers. It's early but so far I would count this as Roy disappointing with a stud recruit again, although I suppose it's unlikely he'll keep Anthony past this season (knock on wood). I've said it before, but just because he had success with Coby White, who was only ranked around 25 and not regarded as OAD, doesn't mean Roy can duplicate that when the player is considered to be a top-10 OAD stud. I don't exactly know why the ranking would matter -- maybe Roy is a beta who gets nervous and stares at his shoes around high-end talent instead of coaching them -- but maybe it does. Again, let's just hope Anthony doesn't end up staying 3-4 years.

All that said, I expect Anthony to improve, and Roy gets his teams to peak in March. The Bacot injury might help Anthony finish better around the rim as it unclogs the paint. Brooks is probably better as a center than a PF anyway.

It does make you wonder how good the ACC will be this year. It is early and the teams are young but the highest ranking teams UNC and UVa looked really bad in their losses. You need your best teams to look good. If Duke had lost- that could have been a huge knock on the ACC moving forward.

I've got my checkbook ready, too. ;)

I am looking forward to that game, too. Regardless of the outcome, either way, after the game, UVa will have 2 Ls overall and 1 L in the ACC or UNC will have 3 Ls overall and 1 L in the ACC in early December. If Duke can take care of business tomorrow night in Blacksburg, it will be a great weekend!

Bacot for UNC rolled his ankle badly last night. He may be out or at least limited at UVa Sunday based on how the injury looked. He landed on another player’s foot coming down for a rebound and severely rolled it. Braxton Key is also out indefinitely for UVa. Both teams potentially won’t be at full strength.

I get the 'whipped dog' syndrome that we've all settled into, assuming all the top talent over on the dump will stay longer than anyone would expect, but c'mon, Cole Anthony is a top-5 pick and he's gone after the season. He's Marvin Bagley III, Zion Williamson, RJ Barrett, Jayson Tatum, Harry Giles, Brondon Ingram, Kyrie Irving gone. There are no ifs, ands, or buts about it. I'd bet my mortgage on it. Literally. Only, no betting service would take my money because it's a complete guarantee.

Also, Bacot is going to be missing some serious time. I'd guess 6 weeks, but it depends on the MRI. It looked like a high ankle sprain, but if there's ligament damage, he could be cooked until well into conference season if he's back at all.

[12]North Carolina (-2) hosts [4]Ohio State (9:30, ESPN)

Miami and Duke won as underdogs; BC, Syracuse and North Carolina lost as favorites.

Two wins on the road -- Duke and Miami -- and four at home: Pitt, Louisville, State and Georgia Tech. Not enough wins and two losses by highly ranked ACC teams -- Virginia and UNC, who got blown out.

Doesn't great defense produce easy offense? As in, turnovers and rebounds lead to fast breaks and layups. So, how is Virginia #1 in defense per KenPom and #120 in offense. I suppose, if the Cavaliers were 30th in defense, they might be 200+ in offense.

Granted that UVA has a great defense, but some of the reason their opponents score low numbers is that UVA runs a slow-as-molasses offense which limits the opponents number of possessions, IMHO. Perhaps one of our stat experts could do a complete breakdown of their of UVA games to prove (or more likely disprove) my amateur, uniformed, naive, irrational opinion.

I don't think UVA looks for the break much as part of their offensive system, so their turnovers and rebounds lead to less fast breaks than would be expected because Virginia doesn't push the ball up the floor when it has the chance. It is also possible that their style of defense creates more dead ball turnovers than live-ball which would limit fast break opportunities even though it results in a low points-per-possession stat but I don't know how to check that (or at least I don't care enough to actually check).

The defensive rating is points-per-possession so number of possessions doesn't matter.

On Bart Torvik's site, (which has a slightly different methodology-perhaps a little less preseason weight?) Virginia's O is 211. That is awful and really hard to do when your defense is that good.

...

They play a pack line defense, which does NOT pressure the ball on the perimeter which would, in turn, lead to fast breaks. They take away easier baskets and 2nd chance points. Their guards crash the defensive boards, leaving them out of position for a fast break. Thus, on offense, they must earn buckets 5 on 5, lowering their efficiency. Better defensive stats but worse offensive stats.

On offense, their guards focus on defending the break, so they do not get as many easy second chance points from offensive rebounds.

Notre Dame does not have enough players (https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/28233695/irish-lose-robby-carmody-injury-chris-doherty-transfer) to have a 5-on-5 practice.

An MRI on Thursday confirmed that sophomore reserve guard Robby Carmody suffered an ACL injury to his left knee during the final minute of Notre Dame's 72-51 loss at No. 3 Maryland in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge that will keep him out the rest of the season.

With sophomore power forward Chris Doherty planning to transfer at the end of the semester, Brey will have eight scholarship players and one walk-on available when the Fighting Irish (6-2, 0-1 ACC) face Boston College (4-5, 1-0 ACC) on Saturday afternoon.

It appears Notre Dame will miss a third straight NCAA tournament this season. Anyone have a sense if Brey's seat may be getting hot? He has exactly 2 recruits signed for next season... neither of them are in the top 200. In 2019 Brey did not sign a single recruit. The only freshmen on the roster right now is a walk-on.

What does everyone think will be the outcome when Carolina plays UVa today at 4?

Can UVa’s defense hold Cole Anthony in check? Is there anyone else on Carolina’s team that can step up? Will Armando Bacot be able to play? My guess is that he won’t play, and that if UVa can contain Anthony and control the pace, they will win easily.

But if Carolina can force the pace and Anthony has a big day, UVa may have a tough time. Both teams have had a difficult time scoring recently, and Cole Anthony is supposedly nursing an injury. Will be interesting to see how this one turns out.

Go Wahoos!

Quite the stat line for the shining superstar of this year's freshman class: Anthony shot 4-15 from the floor, 1-6 from behind the arc, with 6 turnovers against 0 assists. But I'm sure it was because he was playing injured.

He did get more hype than White, he was ranked higher and projected to go higher in the draft. Anthony looked great in the first game or two and that further cemented the hype. But since then he has really cooled off as defenses realized they can focus all their attention on him because literally nobody else on the team can do anything. Bacot is solid but none of their guards and wings can do squat.

Good job by UVA. UVA is actually getting back into shape offensively even if they did play against Roy's defense. 9F.

K has never said there was a 99.99% a player was out only to have that player return. Roy did with Becot, and I don't think that's a honest response. 9F.

Is there a better name in college ball this year than Stattman?

Listening to Roy post game. He basically said that his coaching is dependant on talent. He literally said he's the most frustrated he's ever been.

Who says ol' roy doesn't adjust to modern times. Instead of throwing his players under the bus, he drove the bus into the locker room and drove in circles until they were all mush in the tire treads.

My favorite IC thread titles so far (it's early in the evening)

Recruiting failures coming home to roost

Why can't these guys shoot?

Aren't we due for some luck?

No bigs, no depth, no good...Is Anthony really a one and done?

I thought K was blowing a little smoke when Stanley came back after missing one game, but then Bacot returns after missing zero games. Both coaches said they expected to be without their respective players for a while. Anyways, I’m glad Bacot returned so they don’t have an excuse for losing. I mean, other than having no talent and a terrible coach.

I get not liking Roy - but he is not a terrible coach by any stretch. He is one of the most successful coaches of all time and outside of K has won more championship than any current coach and the last one in 2017.

Enhanced by cheating "university" athletic and (several) academic departments for 23 years or more.

If ol'Roy wouldn't admit to twenty years of wide spread cheating, what makes anyone think he would've told anyone Bacot wasn't hurt as bad as most thought. Didn't make any différence any way as UVA spanked the holes even without Braxton Keyes and Diakite playing his worst game in a Va. uniform. Loved it!!!

Just another example of how the game has passed Roy by. The sports pundits are too kind to say it during press conferences but you hear the whispers, particularly around the bar in my family room during timeouts. He's too old, the vertigo is wearing on him, the sleepness nights from a guilty conscience driven to submission from 20 years of cheating. Everyone knows it's time for him to retire. Sure let him eclipse Dean's win total and pssst...we'll all pretend the victories are legit. Then while Roy coaches out the season Bubba should hire an interim Coach to you know, get a handle on the subtleties of the AFAM curriculum. It's best for all concerned, trust me.

Has anyone proven that all players on Roy's championship teams WEREN'T ineligible? No one has volunteered their transcripts as proof....

You're assuming that they have transcripts...now I wouldn't say that's a bit on the gullible side...but, just sayin.

It's my first time watching Cole Anthony, but perhaps it's not the best opponent for me to get an accurate idea of his skill-set.

Edit: He just air-balled a three. Is he supposed to be a better point guard than Colby White? I feel Anthony got way more hype than White coming into the season.
I watched Anthony’s first game and he looked like a budding superstar. But it’s been all downhill since...

UNC Starting lineup:

Top 3 recruit. no. 1 PG
Top 20 recruit. top 5 center
4* Junior PF
4* Sophmore SF
4* Senior SG

That's more talent, sometimes overwhelmingly more talent, than the teams they've been blown out by.

Give UNC's roster to K and I can guarantee you that every single player will look better.

Roy needs both talent and experience to succeed in a single style of offense.

On a scale of 1-10, how badly do you think Cole Anthony wished Tre Jones had gone pro?

Cole Anthony was never going to come to Duke. His father made sure of that. We were cut before Tre announced his decision to return.

His other choice was Oregon.

I took the comment by Dukehk to mean that Cole won't like Tre's defensive pressure.

Coaching!

Roy is sneaky good coach and always planning for the future. He’s setting up Cole to lead the Heels next year.

Well, he was ranked as the most overrated coach by his peers a few years ago. So . . . .

Roy is a great recruiter, although has coached at two schools that start with a leg up anyway.

Roy is very good at coming up with game plans for an opponent, and I think this skill is often undervalued by his detractors.

I see little evidence that Roy is much of an in-game coach. Few adjustments, weird substitution patterns, no time-outs to stop runs and to change something. As best I can tell, his theory is to come up with a plan and it is up to his kids to execute it. Not a bad theory, but as the old boxing saying goes — everyone’s got a plan until they get punched in the face.

And it seems that every year, he complains in a few post-game press conferences that his teams lack passion and intensity, which comes from the top. This is a rarity for teams coached by K, Izzo, Bennett, etcetera but seems to be a recurring theme in Chapel Hill.

He’s far from from a terrible coach. But I would say he is fourth-best in the league at most.

Best line in one of the Virginia-unc game writeups:

It was the first time since the 1947-48 season that the Tar Heels failed to reach 50 points in back-to-back games.

And I forgot to add — most of his victories at UNC should have been voided by the NCAA due to the near two-decade acathletic cheating scandal whether he knew about it or not. His record has a big asterisk next to it in my opinion.

If anyone hasn't watched the game, pour yourself a cold one and enjoy. There were multiple sequences that had me laughing at the ineptitude of both teams. The announcers should have got hazard pay.

The cheaters looked good, real good.

I'm sure it will distress everyone here that I report a total lack of belief in Chapel Hill this year. They're a collection of parts that don't fit together as a team. (UVA could also be described that way, but at least the UVA players appear to like each other.) Bacot is a good player but a liability at the line. Anthony is clearly the best talent on the team but has no backup plan for facing a strong defense. The grad transfers are showing why they spent most of their careers in the CAA and the Big South. I'm not as down on Roy as a coach as a lot of the folks here, but he's not the guy to get their roster where it needs to be.

No no no no!! 2001-02 should live on forever. If the NCAA were to properly punish the Heels, they would take down all those cheating banners in the Dean Dome and make the school put up a big 8-20 banner with Matt's face on it.

Now seeing that banner hanging in the cheats house would always bring a big smile to my face😀

UNC Starting lineup:

Keep in mind that last year his team featured

#2 or 3 freshman
Future #7 pick in NBA draft
Future #11 pick in NBA draft
ACC preseason player of the year
Multiple 4-star juniors and seniors.

Pretty much the perfect formula for success according to many fans, a blend of talent and experience. And they got blown out in the S16 and were never really a legitimate threat.
