They played tough and smart, gonna be tough out. Nolley (sp) is really good

If they play with that kind of effort game in game out (I already believe they'll shoot it that well on average), they'll be a legit top 25 squad for the bulk of the year and a threat to any of the top 4 in the ACC currently.

Let's see, here va.tech loses their coach and about 90% of last year's players and I thought they would probably have a down year and now they are 6-0, knock off Mich.State, and might even be better than last year. Great credit to them. Don't know how they do it.

Kudos to Mike Young, did a super job coaching at Wofford and is carrying over to V T. he had an empty cupboard on arrival and just amazing job of fielding a team let alone this cohesive unit

Jordan Sperber of Hoops Vision had a series of tweets during the game. The defensive strategy used by VA Tech was essentially the same defensive scheme the Kentucky employed. They double the ball handler. The help defender gives a slow hedge, so he stays with his man during the pick-and-roll a little later than a hard hedge. Winston is forced to give up the ball and the pick man has been a non-shooting and/or ball-handling big. Essentially, it kills the play as no one else on MSU has sufficient play making and the defense can recover in time. It will be interesting to see if Duke uses this defense and how MSU responds. I could see Moore, Stanley, and Goldwire providing sufficient help to force Winston to give up the rock.

Michigan State is going to be looking for a signature win. Having Sparty and VT on the road back to back suddenly looks both daunting and like great opportunities.

As much as Izzo is know for overachieving in the tournament (until flaming out in the Final Four), he should also be known for frequently underachieving in the early season. Something about his teams seems to need to hit rock bottom and then claw their way back.

Did I hear correctly that Mike Young got 3 guys to re-classify to build his team this year?

This result was good for Duke. We play VaTech twice and MSU once. Also, this increases Kansas' chances of winning Maui and kickstarting their push towards a #1 seed. (Obviously unless you hold animosity towards KU, it would be nice for them to do really well this season since Duke has already banked a victory over them, thinking of our own seeding).

Well, December starts with a bang, going to Michigan State on December 3, and to Va Tech on December 6, so this promising Duke team will be seriously tested.

Considering how badly our late February trips to Blacksburg have gone in recent years, I like getting this particular road game out of the way, hopefully with a good result.

Bring back some nutmeg.

If I remember correctly, from a third grade project I did on that state, the official nickname used to be "The Nutmeg State" - but that was MANY moons ago.....

i think it was a slur — some colonial Connecticites (Connecticutters?) sold wood shavings as nutmeg. Ao they called it The Nutmeg State. At least that is my recollection from my CT school days.

In case you want a thorough breakdown of the Hokies, Hoops Vision has you covered. It's worth a watch. I might also point out that VA Tech has no size. They start PJ Horen (6'5", 230 lbs) and Landers Nolley, a 6'7" small forward, alongside 3 guards. It will be interesting to see how Duke copes with that as Vernon Carey, Jr. should be able to get any amount of buckets he wants but then who does he guard?

If only someone had seen it coming....

And then a helluva a game against KU in the final. Wonder what might have happened if they hadn't had the first round cake walk against Chaminade. In any case, I think the Flyers are for real and am excited to see how they progress.
