We don't often see slates in which 3 of 4 ACC teams playing non-conference games are underdogs. And in the one game in which the ACC team is the favorite, the "opposition," according to the (early) metrics, is the worst team in Division 1.

VT now up 10 with under 5 to play. If they can do this consistently, they are going to be a tough out for anyone this year. Or are they playing their best game of the year? I guess we'll have to watch and see.

This game reminded me of the Sweet 16 and Elite 8 games in DC last year. 2 of my least favorite fan bases, with Buzz and Izzo dancing all over the court. So I was kinda pulling for the meteor. Mike Young does seem like a good guy, though.

Virginia Tech with a signature win in Maui. They looked good.

Facts:

1. Virginia Tech received zero points in either poll this week, despite being 4-0 (now 5-0) with a road ACC win. As a point of comparison, their next opponent is Dayton, and the Flyers have 1 point in this week's AP Poll breakdown (https://collegepolltracker.com/basketball/2019/week-4).

2. Landers Nolley II, who hit the last two field goals for the Hokies and had 22 points today, was ACC Freshman of the Week in Week 2. (Cole Anthony won in Week 1, and Vernon Carey had the honor last week.)

Opinions:

1. I imagine they'll get a few votes next week, regardless of what happens in Maui.

2. There's a distinct possibility that Nolley becomes the first repeat winner of ACC Freshman of the Week, taking a surprising early lead on the season's race. Vernon Carey doesn't have a tournament to play this week, and Cole Anthony won't play a team considered as good as Michigan State.

The most amazing thing about that is Pitt was 1-16 from three (6%!) While K St was hot from downtown shooting 10-20! That's a 27 point difference to make up....and somehow they did it.

The week before, one writer actually had them 18th. He dropped them this week, which makes me think he gave them a vote by mistake, because they did nothing to warrant being dropped.

Looking at the score of this game he may want to assign positions for the next contest.

Well played. We actually knew Mr. Moton, as all his players called him, when he coached at the middle school all three of our children attended. Great guy and sooooo happy for his successes.

46-26. Every 12 year old rec ball game my kids have been involved in was better than 46-26. That is an offense to all of college basketball.

Not much of an offense at all, by the looks of it. From either team.

Kudos to virginia for holding their opponents to such a low score, but that must have been a horrible game to watch.

How on earth did they even manage to come up with a football score anyways. I always think the refs seem to buy into their "pack line" defence i.e. no calls.

Virginia 2019: giving rock fights a bad name.

On offense, we’ve broken the 1 point per possession barrier exactly once (against Vermont). Maine, the 274th best D in the country per KenPom, held us to 0.84.

With Key’s surgery and Stattman reputedly having mono, UVA is down to 7 available scholarship players potentially until January, so if anything things might get *worse* over the next few weeks. It’s kind of mind blowing.

As an NC State fan, the Maine/Virginia game was thrilling. I was really disappointed when Maine scored that last basket and got to 26. I was hoping that folks would be talking about how they scored less than 24 points. Alas, now everything thinks, "Wow! That's almost as bad as NC State last season". /facepalm.

Speaking of State. Huge game against a shorthanded Memphis today. Although State is shorthanded as well, it looks like we'll have all our starters at least. AJ Taylor and Danny Dixon are both out for the game. Who? To be honest, I'm not sure either is more than a practice player.
Taylor (https://www.backingthepack.com/nc-state-basketball/2019/5/4/18529529/atticus-taylor-nc-state-basketball-recruiting) sounds like he might take a medical redshirt
Dixon (https://www.backingthepack.com/nc-state-basketball-recruiting/2019/5/7/18535452/danny-dixon-nc-state-transfer-umkc-kangaroos) should be back to practice soon.

Well, both these teams are correctly spelled with an "*"
