The initial college basketball ratings by Jeff Sagarin for the coming season are out. I don’t believe that he has ever described how he gets the initial ratings but I assume that he uses ratings from a few previous seasons and averages. As a result, strong teams for the past few seasons have a high ranking whether they deserve it or not for the coming season. By mid-December, the initial bias is gone. The result this year is that several ACC teams are ranked more highly than most would rank them, particularly, Duke at 4, Maryland at 15, BC at 21, Georgia Tech at 27 and Florida State at 38. N.C. State and Clemson are two teams expected to challenge Duke for 2nd and they are ranked 44 and 42, respectively.
The ACC is ranked the top conference while the PAC 10 is ranked as the 5th best conference.
I expect that many of the rankings for ACC teams will flip flop once they start playing games.
