As always, this is my least favorite thread to start every season.

Trevon Duval was drafted fifth in the draft today by Iowa so one would assume that he plays there this season.

It usually takes a few days to make it official, but Marques Bolden is expected to be one of four players that Cleveland places in Canton.

I was pretty disappointed not to see Bolden at least get a two way deal after seeing him still on the roster with less than 15 guys an only one committed two way deal.

Speaking of two way deals, I’d expect to see Amile on this thread a lot with the Lakeland Magic as he’s still on a two way deal with Orlando.

Yep, Amile probably has one more season before we can finally say goodbye to him on this thread.

I would expect some Harry Giles when he gets back from injury.

On any other team, I would expect a ton of Gary Trent, but the Blazers do not have their own team so use the league sparingly.

Marques joining Canton for camp is confirmed:
https://gleague.nba.com/news/2019-nba-g-league-training-camp-rosters/

The other big news is that Andre Dawkins is going to be in camp for the Santa Cruz Warriors after they traded for his rights in February. His last stint ended in injury so it is good to see that he is healthy again, but there is a lot of camp competition so it may be tough for him to make the final roster.

Andre has been waived.

There are only a handful of preseason games, but Trevon did play 11 minutes in one and scored 8 points. The Timberwolves have three players assigned to the team right now and also had both two-way contract players there so he had to settle for bench duty.

I also saw that Amile just signed a two-year deal with the Magic (upgraded from the two-way contract he was on previously). Great news for him! I imagine he'll still be mostly a G-league player, but maybe he'll get an appearance or two on the main squad.

I would be surprised if Marques doesn't play in the NBA this year. Although pre-season doesn't count for much and G-League is not much more, he has acquitted himself well so far. Although the game has moved away from Marques' style of play, tall guys that can block shots, take up space in the lane, grab boards, and score close to the rim occasionally, still have value.

For years we have been used to looking at this thread and seeing Quin Cook, Amile Jefferson, Gary Trent, and other Dukies putting up big G-League numbers on their way to earning NBA contracts. I am bummed to see Marques and Trevon struggling to even get 10 or so minutes per game. Keep working at it, guys!

Particularly sobering for Duval, who is in his second year in the G-League. Matt Jones was much more productive in his two years in the G-League and he didn't get a sniff from the NBA.

Hamstring injury, day-to-day. Still on the big club’s roster. Interesting to see if he gets any playing time since Portland added Carmelo. He was only averaging about 8 minutes a game, mostly garbage time.

I agree. Marques has a small window but he has to be much more productive. Only the top players have a chance of moving up. Duval has a lot of work to do- his jump shooting was and is a huge problem. He may have peaked in high school- it happens for many.

He did manage to secure a three year guaranteed contract after being drafted so he doesn't have to worry too much about his future yet, but he definitely wants to be showing something by the end of this season. He probably would have benefitted from being able to play more in the G League, but his team does not really believe in it so it has not been an option.

If Duval's vision issues will never be resolved, it seems unlikely that he will ever be a top level pro, but could still be productive at a lesser level. That he has been so productive even with it is pretty remarkable. I wonder if that would have been possible to sneak past NBA medicals if he had been able to go straight out of high school.

Nah,, he did better than high school in 3-4 games as a Freshman at Duke, a couple of games were great! so that was a better peak than high school
.He large great ball palming hands, and a long, quick stride. I loved watching him when he was in sync. When he would drive the lane and make a great finish, or a great dish off, he would face the Duke bench and grin at them as he bounced sideways up the court.
He's still has time, only 21 years old or so. It depends on his work ethic I guess, but I've never heard anything about that, either good or bad.

Just wanted to highlight this to point out that a guy who largely made a NBA roster because a team was required by the league to have one more player under contract is absolutely dominant in the G-League. 27 and 14 are studly numbers and that is what Amile was doing on a regular basis in the G-League before getting a permanent call-up. There is quite a gulf between the G and the NBA. It shows how far Trevon and Marques have to go...

I haven't really seen any injury updates from G-League action, so it's unclear to me if either Big 'Ques or Trevon have been injured, but Marques was not overly productive over the span of a couple of weeks but has recently been putting up better (counting) stats. Trevon has quite a few DNPs lately and has been putting up pretty weak stats when he does play. It appears that no player from Duke has made a bigger miscalculation of his career potential than Trevon. When Will Avery left early to the surprise of everyone and the consternation of K, at least he got drafted and played in the NBA regularly for a couple of years before it came to an end. Other guards from Duke have had disappointingly short careers, Nolan Smith and Demarcus Nelson come to mind, but neither left early or miscalculated their value. Trevon had a pretty decent season for Duke, and it was obvious to everyone that he wan't ready for the NBA . But he was OAD in his mind and nothing was gonna change that. I hope Duke never recruits players like that again.

Not an expert on eye issues, but it sounds like he was doing a diagnosis of how Trevon's vision issues manifest physically.

That is the reason that I can never get on board with the line of reasoning that Trevon should have spent more time in college. The vision was always going to cause a problem with people's expectation of his career potential once it was known.

So... if Trevon had this eye issue for his entire basketball playing days, why hasn't it surface earlier? And why was he so highly regarded... and how did he do it?

He was always fast and athletic enough at lower levels that people did not care about shooting. It's not like high schools do detailed physicals and he had plenty of reasons to hide it.

I don’t understand this post. Are you saying that given his eye issues will never allow him to be a good shooter, it’s better to play G-League a few years than graduate from Duke?

Yes, obviously there is no way to know for sure, but I think that staying multiple years, but showing no improvement in shooting, would hurt his initial opportunities more even with improvement in other areas. For instance, I do not think that a hypothetical four year playing Trevon would be able to get a two-way contract right away. Even if he is never an NBA player again, he will certainly have opportunities to still make a decent living professionally. Strictly from the player's perspective, I do not see why graduating from Duke now as opposed to post-career should make any difference.

Wouldn't he have to pay for that education himself now, rather than Duke paying for it if he stayed 4 years?

I am not sure if there is an official written policy somewhere, but my understanding is that Duke and virtually every power conference school has pretty generous commitments to scholarship holders who stop playing for the school, even in non-revenue sports.

Nothing against Trevon, but I don't think Duke owes him anything at this point. I'd rather see a scholarship go to deserving, underprivileged student than a player who left after one year to unsuccessfully pursue his NBA dream.

Per the rules of being in an NCAA power 5 conference, a player's scholarship cannot be taken away due to injury or performance. If he/she decides to leave the team, however, then the scholarship does not have to be continued.

IIRC an eye condition was diagnosed, and maybe treated while he was at Duke. Basically, again IIRC, he has/had what is often called a "lazy eye" in layman's terms. This is usually treated in childhood with patching or surgery, because if it's not addressed and the two eyes can't focus together, the brain will shut down processing input from one of the eyes, and that part of the brain processing system will also atrophy leaving you effectively blind in one eye (technical name amblyopia.) Speculation is that either his long term vision problems or trying to adjust to the fix contributed/contribute to his shooting issues.

I'm not sure why you accuse me of "small" thinking. Duke and Trevon each kept their end of the bargain. Neither owes the other anything at this point.

There are plenty of deserving, prospective students that don't play basketball who could use some assistance to get into a great school like Duke and ultimately graduate.

I love college basketball but don't see that Duke's mission is to give every one and done an additional three years tuition at the end of their pro career.

Fell free to disagree but I'd appreciate it if you would spare the condescending comments.

I don't know on what terms early departure players can come back to Duke and finish their degree, but it seems to me to be a mutually beneficial thing. It's a good look for Duke Basketball and enhances the "brand". Same can be said for the former player.

[I'll also admit not knowing whether a returning early departure player is taking a regular student's spot; if they are, I can see it's a tougher call, but it might still be worth it to let the player come back ... if they can do the work like a regular student. Then they are, in effect, the regular, deserving student you mention].

Isn’t Will Avery currently a Duke student? That was most likely a brotherhood decision and I’m fine with it. It’s good for players and good for the program. I’m all for finding ways to compensate players outside of cash bidding wars.

That was my initial thought as well, but in his 25 minutes Trevon had only 3 assists (against 3 turnovers). Four of his teammates also had at least three assists.

Not the best showing in this game for Trevon, though I'm hoping he does well and is able to make it back to the NBA soon.

Amile and Matt were super sweet to offer a photo with my daughter in Chipolte during campus visit. Real Folks.
But for 2020 team, biggest loss was Marques leaving. With Vernon's HS skill set, i am sure he was depending on Marques as 5, while he imagined his role as NBA stretch 4. Big loss for our program not having Bolden for ACC and NCAA run, while he is stuck in GGGGG league? No one has talked about this, but this might be Achilles heel for this squad????
