The 2020 PGA Tour has started -- last week with the event at the Greenbrier. The 2020 LPGA Tour doesn't start until, well, 2020.

On the PGA Tour there are four Dukies with status: tour cards for Kevin Streelman (top 80) and Adam Long (top 70 and winner of the 2019 Desert Classic); "conditional" status for Ryan Blaum and Wes Roach, who finished between 125 and 150 in FedEx rankings. Those with conditional status can play in PGA events, if there is room, and are full members of the Web.com tour. Ryan made $755K on the PGA Tour last season; Wes earned $860K -- so they may have a few bucks left to cover their expenses.

At "A Military Tribute at the Greenbrier" event last week, Adam Long finished T14 -- a nice start for the season. Streels, Ryan and Wes missed the cut.

This week we have the Sanderson Farms championship in Mississippi. The Thursday round had a weather delay and many players are still in their first round. Adam Long is -3 after 13. Streels finished at even par, while Ryan finished at +2. Wes is even par after seven holes in the first round.

Go Duke!

At the close of business on Friday, there were players still on the course. Streels is on the cut line at -3 through 13 holes, with birdies on all the par 5's; Ryan Blaum is at -1 through 13 and needs to make up some ground. Adam Long at -6 has finished his second round and is T21. Wes Roach missed the cut.

Hopefully Streelman can finish RD 2 strong. He was playing good golf earlier in the summer but faded toward the end of the season.

In the second round at Sanderson Farms in Jackson MS, Streels came through with a five-under 67 to easily make the cut and finish T33 at -5. Kevin birdied all four of the par-five holes, parred every other hole, and finished a birdie on #9.

Adam Long is T18 at -6.

Ryan Blaum played well in the second round with a -3 score of 69, but missed the cut by two shots. Wes Roach finished far back with an 80 in the second round.

The third round will start shortly.

Wes Roach was the only Dukie at the Houston Open last weekend. He finished T-28 and earned $42,000. He does not have a full tour card this year, finishing 125-150 in 2019, and is able to play only some of the PGA Tour events. Good tournament for Wes, although I am sure he is disappointed he didn't finish as strongly as he started --T-5 after the first round.

This week the PGA Tour moves to Korea -- the CJ Cup @ Nine Bridges (or maybe someone is pulling my leg). Adam Long and Kevin Streelman are in the field.

While we started the 2020 PGA Tour a few weeks ago, the 2019 LPGA Tour continues. Celine Boutier and Yu Liu have been "Shanghai-ed" to play at the Buick LPGA tournament in China. Celine is #51 in the world rankings, while Yu Liu is #38.

Streels moved up eight places with an eagle on the par-five finishing hole. He stands at #27 in the FedEx Cup chase (which is also used for tour qualification). Adam is at #42, coming off a good tournament in Houston last week.

In Shanghai, Yu Liu was nine shots behind after a first round 76 and rallied big time -- outplaying the rest of the field to finish T3, three shots behind the winner,. American Danielle Kang. Yu Liu appears to have won around $77K. Celine also came back after her first round 80 to finish T54 to win around $6K. In the season-long CME Globe rankings, Yu Liu is #17 and Celine #26. The $5 million CME Globe tournament is Nov 21-24 in Naples, FL.

Lost a day to weather -- reportedly nearly ten inches or rain. Saturday's second round is complete now. Adam Long shot even par and is at T47. Streels improved on his poor opening round with a -1, but is still near the back of the field.

In other news, Tiger shot a second straight 64 and has a two-shot lead at -12. A win for El Tigre would be his 82nd tour victory, tying Sam Snead for most ever.

The Mayakoba Golf Classic Sunday made up some of the ground lost on Thursday with the weather cancellation of play. At darkness on Sunday, the leaders have at most four holes to play in the AM to conclude the tournament. Adam Long, with three to play, is two shots out of the lead in fifth place at -18. Should be an interesting morning. Go Duke!

Roach was even par in the final round until disaster struck on hole 7 -- a dreaded "snowman" on a par four. Two shots in the water and some other awful stuff. Let me put it this way -- he sunk a 31-foot putt for his 8. He is now at +4 for the round and has dropped 43 positions on the leaderboard.

This may have been a first for him, but commonplace for me. A far greater % of my 30+ footers go in when I am under pressure to stay in single digits. What can I say, I have that clutch gene ...

The game is a cruel mistress, indeed.

When my kids were young and just learning the game, they made up names for scores higher than a "snowman." They called 9 a "balloon." Anything in double digits was known as a "super-duper ultra-extreme mega-bogey."

Wikipedia indicates that Jabari Parker's Mom Lola is first cousin once removed with Tony Finau and first cousins with his Dad Gary. She is of Tongan and Samoan ancestry -- heck she was born there. That makes, per higher math, Jabari and Tony second cousins -- they share some of the same great-grand-parents.

It’s going to a playoff, as Tony missed his birdie putt on 18 and Webb Simpson made his. I like them both (I have carried the sign for Webb, and he is a super nice guy) but still rooting for Tony!

Yes.

The Top 60 pros & ties advance to play on Sunday at Pebble. The top 25 pro-am teams also play on Sunday. (No ties; if needed, a playoff determines the pro-am teams who advance.)

Tee times for today’s final round at Pebble Beach:

Kevin Streelman 12:26 off #1
Wes Roach 12:26 off #10

Tied for 4th place, Streelman is six shots back of the leader, Nick Taylor, so he will need to shoot mid sixties and have the top 3 play par golf in order to have a chance to win. Nevertheless, Streelman is in position for a strong finish and nice payday.

It was nice seeing him get TV time yesterday. I look forward to more coverage this afternoon.

BTW, if you watched the Golf Channel telecast, you may have heard "electrical interference" on certain parts of the course, like number 17. I thought it sounded like the squawk of parrots, which flock in parts of LA, but it may have been a distortion of other bird noises.

I was listening to XM PGA on my way home from the golf course today and one of the announcers mentioned how far he's hitting his drives. I think he's averaging 350 yards. They said on most par fours if there's not a dogleg he can have a PW to the green. The guy said he predicted him to be at the top of the leaderboard most tournaments. Of course a lot depends on the putter and keeping it in the short grass. My thoughts, not the announcer.

OK, I know that a putt stroke from off the green is not counted as an official putt in the statistics … but the guy playing with Streelman who putted from on the green, sending it past the hole and off the green by a good five feet, and then sank the return shot using the putter should not be credited with a one-putt hole when that one "putt" was so gawd-awful. If I was In Charge, I would count any stroke after the initial putting stroke from on the green as a "putt", regardless of the club used or where it was used.

To that point … is any stroke made from on the green by a club other than a putter counted as a "putt"? I would hope so.

To that point … is any stroke made from on the green by a club other than a putter counted as a "putt"? I would hope so.

My golf knowledge is poor, but I would assume any shot on the green is a putt. Any off the green is not.

Also, is it legal to use another club on the green? I thought not.

As far as I know, Mountain Devil, "greens in regulation" only scores being on the actual putting surface, even though there are many putts from the fringe and even from the fairway close to the green.

Certainly, it is legal to use a different club on the green. Two examples: (1) using a wedge to lift the ball over a portion of fringe or rough on the line of the putt (possible on non-ovoid type greens) and (2) using a wood when the ball is sitting right up against the fringe. For the first, you definitely need to know what you're doing and take care to pick the ball cleanly. But, there is nothing in the rules to prevent using any sort of legal club.

Will Gordon will almost certainly win a temporary PGA card with a third-place finish. I think he's happy.

I've got some new wisdom (??) for those who watch golf with the sound off. If your favorite player tees off, and the shot of his ball includes a set of train tracks, he didn't do so good.

I'm pretty sure that every stroke you take after the first stroke from on the green counts as a putt. So, for example, if your first putt goes ten feet off the green and you chip it back on with a wedge and then tap it in, you would be credited with three putts for that hole.

A first shot from the fringe, even if the ball is only an inch off the green and is played with a putter, is not counted as a putt.

As others have already mentioned, you could putt with a pitching wedge or a driver if you wanted to.

Meh. As it turns out, DJ’s 2nd shot (standing in the water shoeless, with pant-legs rolled up) basically ended up more or less where he would have had to drop. The killer was his flop shot (his 3rd shot) to three feet to save par. His bomb of a drive on 18 didn’t hurt, either.

The real killer was, I think, Streelman's 11th hole. If I remember right, it was the second hole in a row where he all but knocked the pin down with his approach shot. He ran the short putt in on the 10th, but missed on the 11th (I don't remember how badly, it was during a commercial). If there was one shot that determined the outcome, it might well have been that one. Still, an excellent showing after two missed cuts. He also came across well in the final interview.

The action seemed to be all with Dustin Johnson. He made three huge mistakes on the back nine -- drive out of bounds on #13 (those RR tracks!), tee shot into the hazard on #14 (barefoot shot!), and sand trap on #16 (lousy sand shot too!). He lost two shots to par on those three holes -- good scrambling; he could easily have lost four shots, which would have given Streels the win.

This isn't technically LPGA golf, although it is probably *future* LPGA golf and I did not know exactly where else to post it. Four members of the Duke women's golf team are participating in the North & South Women's Amateur this week in Pinehurst: Erica Shepherd, Phoebe Brinker, Gina Kim, and Megan Furtney. The event format is for the entire field of 125 to play 36 holes of stroke play (18 holes today and 18 holes tomorrow) on Pinehurst Nos. 2 and 4. They then cut and seed the field to exactly 32 participants for survive-and-advance match play on No.2 the remainder of the week. The final will be on Saturday afternoon.

Megan finished at -1 in the first 18 -- T8. Gina Kim is E thru 12 holes. Both on Pinehurst #2. Phoebe finished #4 at +7; Erica is at +7 thru 12 on #2. At T99, they will have to finish very strongly to make the top 32.

Jaravee Boonchant is not in the field -- perhaps overseas in her home country of Thailand?

Megan apparently wasn't done yet. Here are the standings for the Duke players:

Megan Furtney -2 (T7)
Gina Kim E (T17)
Erica Shepherd and Phoebe Brinker +7 (T96)

Three of the Duke players played No.2 today; only Brinker played No.4. They flip-flop tomorrow, so Brinker plays No.2 while the others play No.4. Having played No.4 yesterday, those massive, undulating greens are rolling, and rolling fast.

And ahead of Tiger. That may be a 1st.

Furtney (-3 overall, -2 today) and Kim (Even overall and today) make the cut. Shepherd & Brinker do not, with Brinker falling short by a shot after carding a -3 69 on No.4 today.

In match play, Furtney (T3) will be the 3 or 4 seed. Kim (T13) will be anywhere from the 13th to the 18th seed. Opponents still TBD. Match play begins tomorrow at 7:00 a.m. on No.2.

This is painful to read about because it reminds me of the Duke Women’s Golf lost 2019-2020 season as well as the almost certain loss of the 2020-2021 season.

I am just crushed, particularly for Head Coach Dan Brooks, Associate Head Coach Jon Whithaus, and all of the members of the team. Devastating.

Call me naive, but I still hold out a glimmer of hope (small, but existent) for the 2020-21 golf season. Because golf.

Kevin is struggling at +3 after 16. In other news, Tiger is getting ready to tee off - on the Golf Channel.

Streelman hit his ball in the water on 9, 14, and 16 to card a 75. He will have to play much better tomorrow to make the cut.
