This is a huge signing for Duke. Top 5 6' 8"-ish SF - in the mold of Tatum, Battier, Hill, etc.

Welcome to the Brotherhood, JJ!!

Great video.

Would you guys say Johnson is about as skilled as Tatum was at a similar stage?

You made an excellent decision, young man. Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness are best enjoyed in Cameron Indoor Stadium.

I think they're different. Jayson was a better shooter and scorer, especially from the foul line and midrange. Jalen is a better ball-handler and passer; he'll be like our version of Ben Simmons, a terror in transition after he rebounds the ball.

Welcome to Duke, Jalen!

Congrats Jalen!!!

taking a quick glance, it looks like 2012 is the last year we failed to land a top 5 recruit.

Below are Jalen's AAU (EYBL) stats (https://www.d1circuit.com/roster_players/32410754) so far this summer and also his high school stats (https://www.maxpreps.com/athlete/jalen-johnson/MtYa_paPEeiAyNdjx8XCRA/gendersport/basketball-stats.htm) for his junior season.

As you can see, not much of a shooter so far, but can playmake at his size. Defensively he gets steals and blocks, which is encouraging.

John Cantwell was a 5-8 guard from Shawano, Wisconsin. He averaged 3.0 ppg in 1960 and 1961 and went on to become a prominent cardiologist. He was Chief Medical Official for the 1996 Olympic games, held in Atlanta, where he practices.

NBA Draft Room (http://www.nbadraftroom.com/p/2021-nba-mock-draft.html) compares him to Paul Pierce. They also say this:

With an NBA ready body and supreme athleticism Johnson is rocketing up our 2021 mock. He's a prototypical point/wing with great court vision, scoring ability and versatility.

Video of this kid makes me feel like he’s Harry Giles (pre-injuries) with better court vision. Or Tatum without the shooting ability. Welcome to Duke, Jalen!

Hi all, first time-long time here from Wisconsin. I’ve had the pleasure of watching Jalen play in person several times the past two years. He reminds me a lot of Justise when he gets a rebound, always looking to make an outlet. His offensive skill set is really impressive as are his decision making skills. On defense he can lose interest and sag off of players often, while attempting the take the gamble or make the highlight play. Excited to see him acclimate to the college game.

“Tatum without the shooting ability”?? Not sure that’s a particularly strong compliment.

Awesome news! For every recruiting class, there is usually one or two centerpiece recruits. For 2020, that guy is Jalen Johnson. He's got size, athleticism, court vision, passing, and many other things that are rare for someone his size. And he fills up the box score with rebounds, assists, steals, blocked shots, and scoring. That sort of player makes the game easier for everyone as he can be a secondary ball handler. He can grab and go off of a defensive rebound. While he can score with anyone, a teammate knows that you can pass to him because he's just as likely to give the ball back to you when you are open. I'm excited to see him in Duke blue next year!

This is a big win especially so early in the process. This allows other recruits to envision them playing together. Go Duke.

Oh wow...a Ben Simmons type? He should absolutely excel at Duke, especially if we put some shooters around him.

He does indeed. Mr. Johnson ‘used’ to be a UNC fan until he met with Coach Scheyer.

Maybe better. His shot looks better than Tatum's. Maybe a bit quicker off his feet too.

That’s just Jalen being nice and puts a positive spin on his decision. Gives Scheyer credit rather than saying he realized UNC b-ball is a cesspool.

Anyone who would do that is not much of a fan.

I know a woman who was/is a Duke fan. Cutcliffe had not turned the program around, so she wore red in football because the farmers were going to bowl games. Then she decided orange paws were the rage.

ah, Wikipedia. I don't know the technical definition of "growing up," but I do know Paulus played in Manlius NY from at least the eighth grade, and I suspect sooner.

Sounds like a pretty macho place that may not be the most feminist place.
