Jim Sumner is writing a 3 part article on next season. Part 1 is up on the main page:

https://www.dukebasketballreport.com/2019/6/7/18654921/jim-looks-at-next-season-for-duke-basketball-mike-krzyzewski-tre-jones

In other words, he [Krzyzewski] wants Jones to be Bobby Hurley.

Well worth the time to read and looking forward to the next piece. Interesting angles on Baker.

To put some perspective on K's belief that Jones can average double-digit assists, here are the players who have averaged 10+ apg since 2002 (that's as far back as I could quickly find):

Ja Morant - 10.0, Murray St, 2019
Jason Brickman - 10.0, Long Island University-Brooklyn, 2014

That's it. Most years, the national leader is in the mid-7 to mid-8 APG range.

Hopefully our shooting improves this year....if not there won't be any ten assist Jonesing...

Depends on if you're rounding...in this list Brickman just misses the cut.

Looks like it has probably happened about six times since 1985 (the list does not appear to include the 2018-2019 season yet so Ja Morant is missing). If you round to the 10ths place you get 8. Only once since 1995 (Morant), or twice if you count Brickman.

Great read- thanks Jim!

Since this part focuses on returning players, here are my hopes:
6-8ppg for Baker, O’Connell, and White, and defensive chops to keep them on the floor with a positive plus/minus.

Double digit rebounds for Javin and enough floor time to be a defensive presence and another 6+ ppg.

I’d love to see 10/10 out of Tre- I’ll reiterate if he can be healthy post surgery and be a legit offensive option, it makes Duke’s offensive versatility a major advantage.

Is it October yet? 😀

It's ridiculous to believe Tre could average 10 assists a game. And that's being kind. I would take 16 points, seven assists and fewer than three turnovers a game. I don't know what Coach K could possibly have been thinking.

As an irishman, that hurts.

It reminds me of something my uncle Larney once told me. See, Larney had this dog that could talk . . . .

But make no mistake, Duke will again rely heavily on its freshmen. At least three should start and I wouldn’t be stunned to hear all four’s names called at the beginning of some games.

Coach K always talks players up before the season. I assume it's partly to psych up the players and partly to make opponents nervous. I think any such statements should be taken with a grain of salt--or, put another way, we should assume he said, "In the best of all possible worlds, assuming nothing goes wrong, Jones is a player who could average a double double."

I liked JJ's approach about setting goals. His goals were to get in the best shape possible and to work on his perceived weaknesses so that he would be better prepared to help the team. Naming specific and sometimes unrealistic goals means the player winds up feeling he has failed if the goals are not met, even when the play has been excellent.

Meshugana is a noun; meshuga is an adjective - must admit I had to look it up.

Jones is the one guy who isn’t going to move around positionally. He’s the starting point guard, he will be on the floor a lot, he will have the ball in his hand and he will initiate the offense.

It’s his team.
