This is from last week, but Duke settled with the government for 112 million in a research misconduct case. Also, under the whistle blower rules the whistle blower receives 1/3 of the settlement!!! A technician in a basic science research core facility was faking data and the data ended up in several federal grants and publications. This seems like a really stiff penalty to Duke. The articles don't really go into Duke's overall role. Sounds mostly like a rogue employee. I'm not sure if it was a lack of oversight, cover up, culture, etc. that would get Duke into this much trouble.

1. Don't care. It's not a systemic problem.
2. Wrong forum.

Haven't read the articles (at least in the last week), but Duke's response has been a wholesale revision of research management and quality assurance. Many of you may have received emails directly from Duke.
