Like some of you (Julian?), Jordan H.S. is my alma mater. As a high-school coach, I'm pretty sure he'll have to teach at least one class. Obviously, Abnormal Psychology with Sheed will be a hot ticket. :p

Another JHS alum here. Seriously, what is he going to teach? PE? Is he qualified?

Wow. I know several Jordan alums too.

Sheed has always been... Fascinating to me. So much talent, so much headcase.

Does he need to offer a class? I mean that would go against the Carolina way.

Add me to the JHS alum list...I think this is pretty cool. Will certainly generate some interest in the basketball team!

Gonna go with English:

"READ WITH SHEED"

The t-shirt will be a hot seller (subtitled in Swahili)

I actually kind of liked Sheed. Vince Carter, however, is a very different story.

Where I grew up I believe you were required to have a college degree from a legitimate institution in order to teach (and I believe to coach). 1) Does he have a degree? (I am truly not sure) 2) If so, is the institution from which he holds this degree legitimate? (I am pretty sure it is not)

I work at a high school in eastern NC. We have coaches that do not work at the school for some sports. I don't know if there is a county rule in place but I doubt it. I'm sure he got hired on his qualifications and popularity, but I don't see any rules being broken.

Maybe Hanstravel can come help him. He could at least show him how to read them "Chicken Little", bless his heart.

If he does indeed teach, who's going to grade test papers seeing he probably can't read. Oh, the lady that graded the fraud class papers. I had forgotten about her. GoDuke!

I, too, am a Jordan High alum. Not really enthusiastic about the hire...

Back of the envelope based on this thread, I'm estimating ~63.8% of DBR posters are apparently JHS alums.

My son is a student there now, sophomore on varsity baseball. Will have to ask him tonight about the buzz

I'm not really enthusiastic about people attacking his literacy.

That was JR.

"JR can't read" spawned "Rasheed can't read"... the former obviously a play on the last name (and the fact that he could not read) that was still fresh enough in everyone's mind to adopt the latter, which was of course rhyme based.

JR was before my time but was apparently a fairly bright guy (or at least Dean claimed he was). In Rasheed's case, it was largely rhyme-based, but also he very publicly took a number of tries to score the 700 on the SAT that was required at the time to be eligible to play as a freshman. I won't get into the PPB discussion of whether the SAT is representative of intellectual ability, but if you know that your ability to participate in a sport as a freshman and attend a university where many of your classmates have scored twice that score rides on getting that score (which should provide some level of motivation to prepare for the test) and it takes you a number of tries to get that score, it is not a good sign...

Wow, cool to have so many fellow JHS alumni here. I think this news is amazing! Props to Sheed for taking this job, seriously. It will definitely be interesting, and even a Duke fan has to admit he’s entertaining. I wouldn’t be a fan of pretty much any other former Heel at my old school but for Sheed, I can pull for him.

And as for having to teach, I’m pretty sure our soccer coach in the late 90’s did not teach a class. I’m talking about Dax, not Steve Turner the guidance counselor for anyone familiar.

Yeah, we don't know how well he reads and shouldn't speculate.

We do know something about his temperament. I'm not sure I'd want him coaching my high school kid.

We should dress as Cameron Crazies and sit behind the bench.

Jordan alum here as well ('88). I'm honestly ok with it, I think it's pretty cool. When I was there, neither the basketball team nor the football team were all that great, but I didn't pay much attention back then and still haven't.
My guess is for the guys it will be pretty exciting to have such a big name leading them, and like it or not, he has had the personal success that very few HS coaches could share with kids.
Now, in the classroom however...
