The final qualifiers on the Men's side will be happening soon.

The United States has already qualified and will be picking from this group for the last two games:
https://www.usab.com/news-events/news/2019/02/mwcq-feb-training-camp-players.aspx

Some people wonder why players would want to participate at this point, but most of the names on the list will not sniff the NBA so this is a great opportunity for them to audition for clubs around the world who might be paying more attention to these games than your average G League game.

As expected, Miela Goodchild is one of the players who will try out for Australia's U19 team this summer:
https://australia.basketball/gems-squad-announced-for-2019-fiba-under-19-world-cup/

She was one of the stars for the U18 team that qualified for this tournament, but she will be joined by some players who were absent due to other commitments.

That tournament schedule has not been finalized, but the U19 World Championship on the men's side did have their group draw with these results:
http://www.fiba.basketball/en/world/u19/2019/groups

There is still time for a contender to emerge and for withdrawals to affect the United States, but they should be the overwhelming favorite to avenge their defeat two years ago.

Thursday marks the start of another set of Men's National Team games around the world. Unfortunately the World Cup qualifiers are behind the ESPN+ paywall with qualifying for other tournament on FIBA's YouTube channel.

A long day of qualifiers started in Asia Group F with the West Asia teams hosting. Australia tried some younger players out as they went to Kazakhstan and won 81-60. Brief college player Isaac Humphries had 17 points and 7 rebounds, Mitch Creek had 12 points as he just came off his first NBA contract, and recent college graduate Jock Landale had 10 points while newly naturalized Anthony Clemmons had 31 points in the loss. Iran is in crisis, allowing Japan to climb above them with a 97-89 win as the hosts also forgot how to handle the math at the end of the game, causing them to drop in the tiebreaker even though they are still likely to qualify. In the win, naturalized player Nick Fazekas had 26 points and 8 rebounds. The Philippines took care of business in Qatar 84-46 as naturalized player Andray Blatche returned to game shape after suspension and had 17 points, 15 rebounds, and 7 assists, former collegian Marcio Lassiter had 14 points, and brief collegian Japeth Aguilar had 10 points.

In Europe Group K, Russia took care of what they could control with a 104-60 win in Bulgaria while naturalized player Jason Washburn had 19 points for the hosts. Finland avoided elimination as Jamar Wilson, who is naturalized by marriage, had 29 points and 6 rebounds to help them past France 76-69 as Alex Murphy was not in contention due to injury. Former draft pick Mathias Lessort had 11 points and 10 rebounds for the visitors. Finland must travel to Russia and win by enough to flip the tiebreaker in order to qualify. The Czech Republic beat Bosnia and Herzegovina 69-64 in a game with no impact for either team.

In Group L, Serbia would have only needed a win to take the last spot, but were humiliated on the road by eliminated Estonia 71-70 despite having their talisman Milos Teodosic back after his recent NBA exit with 16 points and 10 assists. Israel kept themselves alive with an 81-77 win over Germany as T.J. Cline had 14 points as the player brought in with American ties. In the loss, former collegian Niels Giffey had 16 points and ex-NBA player Paul Zipser had 15 points. Greece beat Georgia 81-69 despite 18 points from naturalized player Thad McFadden. The key game to watch in the last set of games will be Serbia hosting Israel.

In the Americas Group F, the northern teams hosted this round. Canada's players were looking to impress for final roster spots in their 85-46 win over Chile as Brady Heslip had 14 points, Kyle Wiltjer had 12 points and 14 rebounds, and Melvin Ejim had 12 points and 9 rebounds among their former collegians. Brazil officially qualified with a 104-80 win over the US Virgin Islands while still relying on old NBA players as Marcus Vinicius had 22 points and 9 rebounds, Leandro Barbosa had 19 points, and Alex Ribeiro Garcia had 11 points. The hosts had a team of players with experience on the mainland as Georgio Milligan had 25 points and 11 rebounds, Devon Peltier had 15 points, and Jamaal Samuel had 12 points. The Dominican Republic started well and then managed to hang on to a 72-67 win over Venezuela as they now hope to beat out the fourth place team in the other group for the last spot from the Americas. Former collegians featured on both sides as Eloy Vargas had 13 points and Sadiel Rojas had 10 points in the win while Nestor Colmenares had 10 points in the loss.

Eric Boateng was not called up by Great Britain for their pre-qualifiers for Eurobasket, putting his national team career in some doubt with talented youngsters emerging, but they did beat Cyprus 84-47 in Group D. Former collegians factored in the result as Ovie Soko had 11 points and 7 rebounds and Andrew Lawrence had 11 points while naturalized player Tyrell Biggs had 11 points in the loss. In Group A, Sweden beat Denmark 79-74, preventing the visitors from clinching the group's spot in the next round as American-born Erik Rush had 10 points and 7 rebounds while former collegian Kevin Larsen had 13 points in the loss. Romania won 65-53 against what I guess I will now call North Macedonia in Group B to also prevent their opponents from advancing automatically. Iceland's 91-67 win over Portugal in Group C means that Belgium gets the automatic spot from the group. Jon Stefansson, infamous for his high school career, had 17 points to lead the way while former collegians also played a part as Haukur Palsson had 15 points and 7 rebounds, Martin Hermansson had 13 points and 8 assists, and Kris Acox had 11 points. Miguel Queiroz, who prepped in the United States, had 13 points in the loss.

The United States was solid, but not particularly spectacular as they play out the string in qualifying, beating Panama 111-80. The visitors also had former collegians as Javier Carter had 18 points and 7 rebounds and Geno Luzcando had 11 points.
http://www.fiba.basketball/basketballworldcup/2019/americas-qualifiers/game/2202/USA-Panama#tab=boxscore

Elsewhere in Group E, Puerto just managed to hold on to their edge by surviving Argentina 87-86. Their players also have extensive experience on the mainland as Gian Clavell had 21 points, John Holland had 14 points, Ramon Clemente had 11 points, and Jorge Bryan Diaz had 10 points and 7 rebounds. The visitors only had one former NBA player as Nico Brussino had 16 points, 7 rebounds, and 7 assists. Uruguay could not keep pace, falling to last place Mexico 88-77, which did not have a single one of the players that it would field if this was the main tournament. Former collegians led the way as the infamous Luke Martinez had 23 points and Jorge Camacho had 13 points. On the final day, Puerto Rico will qualify with a win, eliminating Uruguay in the process. The Dominican Republic will host Brazil in the other group with a simultaneous tipoff and would not need a win if Puerto Rico wins. They will advance with a win, but a Uruguay beating Puerto Rico and Brazil winning would require tiebreakers to determine the last two teams to qualify.

The day of qualifiers started in Asia Group E as Syria had to play home games in Lebanon again, losing to South Korea 87-74, which got 25 points and 12 rebounds from naturalized player Ricardo Ratliffe. China still has an effect on the standings even though they are qualified as hosts and they lost to Jordan 86-62 despite getting Zhou Qi back from the NBA as he had 19 points and 10 rebounds while naturalized player Dar Tucker had 32 points and 11 rebounds for the hosts. Group leaders New Zealand were not as generous to Lebanon as they got 19 points from Tom Abercrombie and 15 points and 8 rebounds from Finn Delany among their contingent of former collegians and won 69-67. The hosts got 10 points and 9 rebounds from naturalized player Ater Majok and had their own former collegians as Ali Haidar had 16 points and 11 rebounds and Ahmad Ibrahim had 10 points.

In Europe Group I, qualified Turkey beat eliminated Slovenia 77-58 as former collegian Sinan Guler had 12 points and ex-NBA player Semih Erden had 10 points and 6 rebounds while the other Dragic brother Zoran had 10 points for the visitors. In a game that really mattered, Ukraine started off extremely well at home, but Montenegro dominated the second half to win 76-74 with 26 points from naturalized player Derek Needham and 11 points from former draft pick Bojan Dubljevic. Latvia missed a chance after losing to Spain 67-62, but they already knew that they need a win at Montengro on the final day.

In Group J, the picture was much more clear as Poland beat Croatia 77-69 to eventually secure the last spot as naturalized player A.J. Slaughter had 15 points. Lithuania beat the Netherlands 78-69 with both teams already knowing their fate as former draft pick Renaldas Seibutis had 20 points. Former collegians featured in the loss as Charlon Kloof had 17 points and Roeland Schaftenaar had 10 points. Italy sealed Hungary's elimination with a 75-41 win as former collegian Amadeo Della Valle had 15 points

Africa Group F is taking place in Ivory Coast as the other group is already done with two teams still looking to capture the last spot by being the best third place team. Central African Republic stayed in the conversation with a 75-57 win over Mali with 18 points from former collegian Destin Damachoua. Senegal grabbed the group's other automatic spot with an 81-41 win over Rwanda and were led by former collegians as Youssoupha Ndoye had 18 points and 9 rebounds and Mouhammad Faye had 12 points and 8 rebounds. The hosts knew that a loss would eliminate them and they were impressive in a 72-46 win over previously undefeated Nigeria, which still brought a decent team as Ike Diogu had 10 points as their veteran star. Former collegians were also involved in the win as Guy Landri Edi had 15 points and Tiegbe Bamba had 10 points and 6 rebounds.

Teams in the Americas not making it to this stage of World qualifying are still able to play in the qualifying for future tournaments. Eight teams are participating in this round in two locations as the top two teams in each group will advance to the next stage. Group A is being played in Belize, which took up the spot vacated by Costa Rica as the northernmost teams participate. Cuba was impressive in getting past the Bahamas 88-74. Former collegians featured in the loss as Michael Carey had 14 points, David Nesbitt had 13 points and 8 rebounds, Tum Tum Nairn had 13 points, and Shaq Cleare had 12 points and 9 rebounds. The hosts beat Antigua and Barbuda 96-71 with their own group of former collegians as Richard Troyer had 20 points, Tyrone Hall had 15 points and 6 rebounds, and Jihad Wright had 13 points. The visitors also have a number of former collegians as Duane James had 18 points and 10 rebounds and Joel McIntosh had 13 points.

Tunja, Colombia is where the four southern teams are playing Group B. Paraguay beat Guyana 93-53 behind 15 points from former collegian Bruno Zanotti while another former collegian Anthony Moe had 13 points and 11 rebounds in the loss. The hosts beat Bolivia 84-51 as they got Braian Angola from the G League and he had 18 points and their old stalwart from the previous generation of players who went to the United States for college, Stalin Ortiz, had 11 points.

The only qualifying for Worlds was in Africa Group F since the games were all in the same location. Senegal beat Mali 62-38 as seeding was the only thing left for them to play for at this point. Nigeria then eliminated the Central African Republic 72-59 despite 16 points from naturalized player Johndre Jefferson. As usual, the group leaders are relying on a number of players with American roots as Ike Diogu had 22 points and 9 rebounds, Ike Iroegbu had 17 points and 10 rebounds, and Michael Umeh had 11 points. Hosts Ivory Coast should feel good about their chances of overtaking Cameroon's point differential to grab the last spot as an 87-60 win over Rwanda leaves them only needing a win over Mali by a handful of points. Former collegians featured in the win as Baru Adjehi had 14 points and 7 rebounds and Mohamed Kone had 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Pre-qualifying continued at two sites in the Americas with Group B quickly getting settled. Paraguay had to come back to beat Bolivia 75-73 as former collegian Bruno Zanotti had 13 points and 9 rebounds. That result coupled with hosts Colombia beating Guyana 114-68 meant that the two victors will play in the next round. The former collegians from two different generations led the way as Braian Angola had 26 points and 8 assists and Stalin Ortiz had 13 points and 10 rebounds. There are also plenty of American ties for the visitors as former collegian Anthony Moe had 17 points and 12 rebounds and junior college player Stanton Rose and New York high schooler Kevon Wiggins had 16 points each.

Cadot had 12 points, and Eugene Bain had 10 points. Cuba fended off Belize 82-80, advancing leaving the hosts with a game against the Bahamas to determine the last team to qualify. Former collegians had solid games in the loss as Devin Daly had 23 points, Daniel Conorque had 13 points and 7 rebounds, and Jihad Wright had 13 points.

The big qualifying games were in Asia today as only three spots had officially been clinched. The only game that had no bearing on anything was in Group E, where China beat Syria 90-59 in Lebanon as Zhou Qi had 32 points and 10 rebounds after his NBA exit. The rest of the games in both groups had simultaneous tipoffs. Jordan took care of their business with an 86-80 win over New Zealand as naturalized player Dar Tucker had 25 points, 14 rebounds, and 8 assists. Former collegians led the visitors as Corey Webster had 18 points and 7 assists, Tom Abercrombie had 10 points and 8 rebounds, and Finn Delany had 10 points and 6 rebounds. That result ended up pushing them through in third place after Lebanon lost to South Korea, which got 25 points and 11 rebounds from naturalized player Ricardo Ratliffe, 84-72.

In Group F, Iran made sure that they would advance, beating Australia 85-74 despite 20 points and 9 rebounds from recent NBA player Mitch Creek and 16 points from brief college player Tom Wilson. The Philippines got 41 points and 13 rebounds from naturalized player Andray Blatche in a win before learning that no math would be needed for them to advance as the best fourth place team. Naturalized player Anthony Clemmons had 27 points and 9 assists for Kazakhstan as the final margin was 93-75. Japan had sewn up second place earlier by doubling up Qatar 96-48 with 20 points and 19 rebounds for naturalized player Nick Fazekas while former collegian Nasser Al-Rayes had 11 points in the loss.

Meanwhile in Europe Group K, the big game was in Russia with the hosts needing a win or a very narrow loss to take the last berth from the group and they needed a comeback to accomplish that in the fourth quarter as they won 81-76. For Finland, Jamar Wilson, who is naturalized by marriage, had 18 points and former collegians played a role as Tuukka Kotti had 13 points and 8 rebounds and Mikko Koivisto had 11 points. France took the top spot in the group with 18 points and 10 rebounds from former draft pick Mathias Lessort in an 82-66 win as former collegian Patrik Auda had 20 points for the Czech Republic. Bosnia beat Bulgaria 87-67 as both teams were already eliminated

The key Group L game was in Serbia as the hosts breezed to a 97-76 win over Israel to avoid the need for any math. They were happy to have Milos Teodosic back from the NBA to seal qualification as he provided 11 points and 9 assists and former draft pick Nikola Milutinov had 10 points. A couple of players with American ties featured for the visitors as Jake Cohen had 16 points and T.J. Cline had 12 points and 6 rebounds. The result eliminated Georgia as well so faded late at home despite 21 points from former collegian Duda Sanadze and 20 points from naturalized player Thad McFadden in an 84-77 loss to Estonia. Greece made sure that they took the top spot in the group, beating Germany 69-63.

Pre-qualifying finished with all four spots in the next round settled now and twelve teams left lined up for the last chance at qualifying. In Group A, Belarus beat Sweden 73-60 to create a tie among all teams in the group, but the visitors still won the tiebreaker to take the automatic place. The hosts got 15 points from former collegian Artsiom Parakhouski and 13 points and 6 assists from naturalized player Devon Saddler. Belgium had already progressed from Group C and a 90-62 defeat did not change Iceland's group placement for the next round as the visitors had a number of former collegians, included Elvar Fridriksson and Martin Hermannsson who had 12 points each. Great Britain won 78-75 in Group D, but that was not enough to shift the tiebreaker as Austria advanced thanks to 26 points, 6 rebounds, and 7 assists from naturalized player Sylven Landesberg. Former collegians also led the visitors as Ovie Soko had 19 points and 9 rebounds and Teddy Okereafor had 12 points and 7 rebounds. Romania beat Kosovo 79-75 in Group B, but that could not lift them into the top spot as naturalized player Giordan Watson had 23 points and 6 rebounds while former collegian Lis Shoshi had 11 points in the loss.

Standings:

Group B: North Macedonia 3-1, Romania 3-1, Kosovo 0-4
Group C: Belgium 4-0, Iceland 1-3, Portugal 1-3
Group D: Austria 3-1, Great Britain 3-1, Cyprus 0-4

Groups for next stage:
Group E: Albania, Belarus, Denmark
Group F: Slovakia, Cyprus, Romania
Group G: Luxembourg, Kosovo, Great Britain
Group H: Switzerland, Portugal, Iceland

African qualifying finished with the last games in Group F were played. Senegal got 14 points and 6 rebounds from former collegian Cheikh Mbodj in an 84-63 win over Nigeria, but that was not enough to become the group leader as Ike Iroegbu had 28 points, 6 rebounds, and 6 assists and Ike Diogu had 10 points and 7 rebounds in the loss with a number of players with American roots participating. Central African Republic beat Rwanda, which got 33 points and 7 rebounds from former collegian Kenny Gasana, 77-69 with both teams already eliminated. The victors got 11 points and 6 rebounds from their naturalized player Johndre Jefferson and contributions from other former collegians as Destin Damachoua had 18 points and 6 assists and Romain Sato had 11 points, 6 rebounds, and 8 assists. That left hosts Ivory Coast with the last game, knowing that a big enough win would flip the tiebreaker to their favor and earn them the last spot. Former collegian Guy Landri Edi had 13 points in their 69-49 win over Mali and that was enough to edge Cameroon's performance in the other group by 7 points.

The only games played in Americas Group F were the ones that had no impact on the final standings as one game was moved to Monday to tip simultaneously with the key game in the other group. Canada topped the group by beating Venezuela 95-55 with some familiar names as Kyle Wiltjer had 19 points and 8 rebounds, Melvin Ejim had 11 points and 6 rebounds, and Joel Anthony had 10 points. The eliminated teams also met with the US Virgin Islands coming back to beat Chile 64-59. The hosts have many players with experience on the mainland as Georgio Milligan had 26 points, 11 rebounds, 7 assists, and 6 steals and Devon Peltier had 12 points while former collegian Gerardo Isla had 11 points and 6 rebounds in the loss.

Pre-qualification finished with only one game having any bearing on who would advance. That was in Group A, but first Cuba finished their perfect record and handed Antigua and Barbuda another loss 123-70 as a couple ancient former collegians featured in the loss as Bryan Matthew and Duane James had 11 points each. That set the stage for the important game, which the Bahamas won 86-72 behind a ton of former collegians as Michael Carey had 21 points and 8 rebounds, Kentwan Smith had 18 points and 15 rebounds, Shaq Cleare had 16 points and 13 rebounds, Tum Tum Nairn had 11 points and 7 assists, and David Nesbitt had 10 points. Hosts Belize also had former collegians as Daniel Conorque had 26 points and 7 rebounds, Devin Daly had 11 points, and Jihad Wright had 10 points.

Group B's games had no impact on anything, but Guyana did pick up their first win 73-65 over Bolivia as the new format tries to answer which regions are stronger top to bottom. Players with American ties led the way in the win as Anthony Moe had 16 points and 6 rebounds, Kevon Wiggins had 15 points, and Stanton Rose had 11 points and 13 rebounds. Hosts Colombia sent the fans home happy with perfection after a 93-82 win over Paraguay as Braian Angola heads back to the G League after 28 points and 6 rebounds and the old former collegian Stalin Ortiz had 12 points.

The United States finished qualifications with a stirring comeback late against Argentina to win 84-83 and top the group. Ex-NBA player Nico Brussino had 11 points and 6 rebounds in the loss.
http://www.fiba.basketball/basketballworldcup/2019/americas-qualifiers/game/2502/USA-Argentina#tab=boxscore

The key game in Group E was in Puerto Rico, where the hosts looked shaky early, but took a lead at the half and did just enough to beat Uruguay 65-61 and take the last automatic spot. The hosts have players with extensive experience on the mainland as Gary Browne had 16 points, Gian Clavell had 13 points, and John Holland had 11 points. Ex-NBA player Esteban Batista had 19 points and 9 rebounds in the loss as their impressive run fell short. The last game played had no impact on qualification as Mexico did give the home fans something to cheer about with a 78-61 win over Panama as former collegian Luke Martinez had 17 points and 11 rebounds and former California high schooler Jose Estrada had 12 points while Trevor Gaskins, one of the many visitors with American ties, had 13 points..

One game in Group F was pushed back so that no teams would have an advantage in the quest for the spot awarded to the best fourth place team. The Dominican Republic looked to take destiny in their own hands early against Brazil, but saw their lead slip away, leaving their fate up to their historic rivals and getting the help they needed to be the last team. Former collegian Eloy Vargas had 15 points and 9 rebounds for the hosts while the old guard still leads Brazil after their NBA careers as Anderson Varejao had 13 points and 12 rebounds and Leandro Barbosa had 13 points.

Standings: Canada 10-2, Venezuela 9-3, Brazil 9-3, Dominican Republic 7-5, Chile 2-10, US Virgin Islands 3-9

The qualifying started in Europe as Group I was the one with drama left. Latvia looked ready to seize the last spot early, but Montenegro kept the game close and an 80-74 loss was enough to keep the tiebreaker in their favor as naturalized player Derek Needham had 22 points, former draft pick Marko Todorovic had 13 points, and former draft pick Bojan Dubljevic had 11 points while former draft pick Janis Timma had 11 points for the visitors. The result was meaningless, but there was extra basketball in Slovenia as the other Dragic brother Zoran had 14 points and 6 rebounds in an 85-84 win while another ex-NBA player Slava Kravtsov had 16 points and 12 rebounds for Ukraine. Spain made sure that they had the top spot, beating Turkey 74-58 with 10 points and 6 rebounds from former collegian Sebas Saiz while ex-NBA player Semih Erden had 16 points for the visitors.

In Group J, Lithuania completed their control of proceedings with an 86-73 win over Italy as Martinas Geben, who played for Mike Brey at Notre Dame, had 11 points. Hungary beat demoralized Croatia 84-65. Poland beat the Netherlands 85-76 with 12 points from former collegian Adam Hrycaniuk. Former collegians also featured for the visitors as Roeland Schaftenaar and Shane Hammink had 12 points each.

The World Cup draw was conducted today in China.
http://www.fiba.basketball/images.fiba.com/Graphic/A/A/5/4/SvbDeu6I_kWCtwSEwS0Epw.jpg

The top two teams in each group advance and will play two games in the next round against opponents from the corresponding partner group (A and B, C and D, E and F, and G and H).

Turkey was automatically in the group due to the desire to keep teams from the Americas, Africa, and Asia from being drawn with other teams from their federations. Greece figures to be one of the next round opponents for the United States, but the other three will be fighting it out for that last spot.

The hosts got a very generous draw and could lock up the automatic Asian Olympic spot quickly. Group H is a group of death that will merge with a potentially tough Group G. Australia might find themselves on the wrong end of the Oceania automatic spot if Canada really brings it and Lithuania is their consistent selves as New Zealand figures to have a solid shot at advancing. The Africa spot is up for grabs as none of the teams should feel like they are in a great position to advance, but if Nigeria brings a strong team, they probably have the best shot of avoiding the classification rounds.

The draw was a rather confusing process so FIBA made a video:

The United States is preparing to reclaim the U19 World Championships this year after losing in both finals two years ago. Other countries already have to prepare for the ones in two years. Guatemala hosted both of the U16 COCABA championships (technically U17 since they are usually played the year before as U16 tournaments) this weekend, qualifying at least the top two teams for Centrobasket tournaments later this year that will qualify teams for the 2020 U18 Americas tournaments that will provide teams to the 2021 U19 World Championships. Both tournaments were conducted as round-robin events due to the convenient number of teams participating.

Final Standings:

Girls:
Guatemala
El Salvador
Costa Rica
Panama
Honduras

Boys:
Mexico
Panama
El Salvador
Guatemala
Costa Rica

Earlier, USA Basketball announced that the same coaches from the U18 team that qualified this team for this tournament, headlined by Louisville's Jeff Walz, will lead this team:
https://www.usab.com/news-events/news/2019/04/wu19-world-cup-coaches-announced.aspx

Both USA U16 teams had their draws for the upcoming Americas tournaments announced. Coaching staffs were also recently announced as the Boys' team needed a new coach to replace the legendary Don Showalter. On the Girls' side, they named another non-D1 college coach for this cycle after losing faith in high school coaches.

Surprising news as Bill Self is being replaced by Bruce Weber as the USA U19 coach:
https://www.usab.com/news-events/news/2019/05/mu19-coaches-announced.aspx

I wonder how long it will take someone in the state of Kansas to uncover the background to this story. We had a change last cycle too, but that made sense with Shaka Smart probably needing to focus on Texas to placate the boosters. Hopefully this works out better than using Calipari as the replacement, though I suppose Weber won't have to worry about R.J. Barrett.

Also announced today was the giant tryout list for the USA U16 Girl's team:

It's too early to tell, but I am sure some of these names will become a bigger deal from a Duke perspective as the recruiting process continues.

I don't usually post about 3x3, but Bella Alarie was selected by USA Basketball to play in a national team event over the weekend in China. They finished 6th, but it was a good experience against teams that have played much more in this format.

The USA U16 Girl's team made their last six cuts to reach a final roster:

The USA Basketball plans for the Men's team this summer are supposed to revealed next week so details are starting to leak out now. There are supposed to be 18 players on the main training camp list and almost that many names have been speculated, including Jayson Tatum. They are intending to carry 10 players on the USA Select team for practice and Marvin Bagley is supposed to be on there while they plan on asking Zion Williamson to try to impress in that format to move up to the main list.

The USA U16 Boy's team finished their group stage with a 122-71 win over the Dominican Republic:

Standings: United States 3-0, Dominican Republic 2-1, Argentina 1-2, Mexico 1-3

In the other group Canada took the top spot with a 96-76 win, helping drop Puerto Rico to the bottom spot, because Uruguay picked up their first win 68-55 over Brazil to also flip the tiebreakers to their favor:

We may have our first confirmed NBA Summer League participant, but it comes from an unexpected source. Croatia was given the chance to enter a national team this year and Antonio Vrankovic is one of the fifteen players on the initial list for senior national team duties this year:
https://www.hks-cbf.hr/vijesti/2019/izbornik-mrsic-objavio-imena-kandidata-za-reprezentaciju

They will also be playing three tournaments in China so it is possible that not everyone will be at every event. This does seem to make it less likely that he represents them in the World University Games as that would cause a time conflict.

Guam is allowed to field a team like Puerto Rico is and they benefit from the new system where they also compete against teams from Asia and not just the ones from Oceania.

There were a couple of tweaks to the U19 Men's team training camp roster:

R.J. Hampton has already begun ducking events. It's not like he has summer school or anywhere else to be right now. The official excuse is apparently insurance premiums, but that seems like something USA Basketball could take care of if they were pushed to do so.

The USA U16 Girl's team starts their quest for the championship of the Americas at 3:30pm ET on Sunday against Mexico. FIBA has actually planned ahead a bit for this one and already provided a link for the game in a currently unknown language:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QF6qYkrhAN0

It's a little early to know whether there are Duke recruiting implications with this team.

Even though I said that I would not cover 3x3 much, Bella Alarie did play with the USA team at a tournament in Turin this weekend, but had to miss the end due to an injury, but more details have not been provided yet.

The USA U16 Girl's game ended up not being played because Mexico was unable to reach Chile in time. When trouble was first on the horizon, the game was pushed back in the day, but that did not work out. The game will be played on Wednesday during the scheduled off day. Fortunately, the United States figures to cruise through the first four games or so leaving plenty of energy even with no rest before the last two days of games.

They are supposed to player El Salvador at 3:30pm ET on Monday and can be seen here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r8tPSQVnKMI

El Salvador lost to Chile 63-46 in the game in the group that was played:

In the other group, Canada beat Ecuador 79-33 and Brazil edged Puerto Rico 62-57:

For some reason, Duke's men's team seems to like to pretend that other countries don't have national teams. Jack White was named to Australia's World University Games team as they play in Italy in early July:
https://australia.basketball/blog/2019/06/17/emerging-opals-and-boomers-name-teams-for-30th-summer-universiade/

I don't usually do full coverage of the tournament since it's not an official FIBA event, but I will treat it like an exhibition tournament and try to update his games.

The USA U16 Girl's team finally got to play a game and beat El Salvador 114-19 as Londynn Jones scored enough in 19 minutes to win the game herself:
http://www.fiba.basketball/u16americas/women/2019/game/1706/El-Salvador-USA#tab=boxscore

I did not watch so the game so I can't offer any opinions on whether they celebrated too much.

Their next game against Chile can be seen here at 8:15pm ET:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d1d4atUTkz0

Mexico finally arrived, but lost to the hosts 61-34:
http://www.fiba.basketball/u16americas/women/2019/game/1706/Mexico-Chile#tab=boxscore

In the other group, Puerto Rico beat Ecuador 52-39 and Canada looked pretty dominant themselves after doubling up Brazil 78-39:

As was expected, the USA Women's team will keep the same coaches for the rest of this cycle, which should mean good news for the health of Dan Hughes:

The USA U19 Men's team was named and there are now less recruiting implications for us:

The USA U16 Girl's team rolled to a 107-32 win over Brazil to secure World Championship qualification.

Their semifinals will be at 6pm ET on Friday with coverage on YouTube.

The first game of the day saw Canada hold El Salvador to their lowest scoring output yet in a 61-15 win. Puerto Rico secured their place with a thrilling 50-48 win over Mexico. Chile had the support of their home fans and that pushed them past Ecuador 56-43 as there was going to be a surprise qualifier either way.

I'm not sure whether this is news for this thread or the Summer League Thread, but Antonio Vrankovic is hanging out with his Croatia teammates as they prepared to get visas to travel to Las Vegas. Presumably he is a dual citizen so he was just there for moral support.

The USA U16 Girl's team had no issues again, beating Puerto Rico 103-30:
http://www.fiba.basketball/u16americas/women/2019/game/2106/Puerto-Rico-USA#tab=boxscore

The final will be at 8:15pm ET on Saturday and should be viewable on YouTube even if the feed is not up yet.

The other semifinal saw Canada struggle with hosts Chile, but still win 50-38, making it seem less likely that they will be close to the United States in the final:

Hopefully I was lying about a lack of immediate recruiting implications for the USA U16 Girl's team. Payton Verhulst was named the MVP of the tournament and her mother played at Duke:

A lot of future competitions have had their draws conducted recently.

The USA Women's team is participating in the AmeriCup again after years of only participating when necessary for qualification. They ended up with all four South American teams Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, and Paraguay. The other group will have Canada, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, and hosts Puerto Rico. Duke participation in tournament, which will be played at the end of September, is still unknown.

Qualifiers for the men's tournament in 2021 were also drawn with the top three teams in each group advancing. The United States was put together with the Bahamas, Mexico, and Puerto Rico. The other group from the northern half will contain Canada, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and the US Virgin Islands. Panama is being grouped in with the South American teams again and joins Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay. Argentina, Chile, Colombia, and Venezuela are in the other group.

EuroBasket Women 2021 qualifiers will see the winners of these groups and the five best runners up join hosts Spain and France:

The pre-qualification process will not be complete until later in the year, but groups have already been drawn for 2021 EuroBasket qualification as the top three teams in each group will qualify, assuming that the hosts, Italy, the Czech Republic, Georgia, and Germany, finish in the top three.

USA Basketball has unveiled a new plan for keeping a number of players from going overseas while keeping them in shape for the WNBA and a handful of national team games before the Olympics. Chelsea Gray is one of eight players committed to being a part of that program:
https://www.usab.com/news-events/news/2019/07/expanded-wnt-program-for-2019-20.aspx

Sofia Roma is one of the players selected by Puerto Rico for the upcoming Pan American Games. I believe that they still have to make one cut from the list before playing in games. Since it is a non-FIBA event, I will cover the tournament like it was made up of exhibition games and they can be seen in the United States on ESPN3.

Eric Boateng is one of the players listed in Great Britain's squad for upcoming EuroBasket qualifiers. It's very borderline for him to be among the best twelve players these days, but he does have plenty of experience and it is good news that he healthy and available to play after having his club season ended by injury.

It was the last day of AfroBasket Women and Nigeria defended their crown as they will likely continue to be the powerhouse on the continent if they can keep bringing in some of the large number of American players with ties to the country.

I recapped the day's games here:
http://www.womensbasketball247.com/2019/08/afrobasket-finals-august-17th-18th/

The draw was also conducted to determine which of the six teams advancing from this tournament will be in which groups for the next stage of Olympic qualifying. Nigeria, Mozambique, and the Democratic Republic of Congo will be in one group and Senegal, Mali, and Angola in the other. The top two teams in each group advance to the one game playoffs that will send the winners to the final Olympics qualifiers.

Dawn Staley is having more interesting player availability issues than Popovich. It is not due to players not wanting to play, but instead a result of the upcoming Americas Championship being during the WNBA playoffs. They are rounding up players for a camp this week:
https://www.usab.com/news-events/news/2019/09/wnt-americup-training-roster.aspx

Chelsea Gray will not be involved now that her team has won in the playoffs. Elizabeth Williams is expected to attend though.

Elizabeth Williams was named to the USA team and Sofia Roma was named to the Puerto Rico team as they play for the Americas Championship starting Sunday on ESPN+.

https://www.usab.com/news-events/news/2019/09/wnt-americup-team-named.aspx

The USA team only had 11 current pros trying out for it so UConn's Olivia Nelson-Ododa took the 12th spot. Jewell Loyd ended up not being able to participate so the last spot went to Khadijah Sessions, who played for coach Dawn Staley in college, but has only ever played 7 professional games, last playing organized basketball three years ago. We can all only wonder what kind of scandal this would be if this happened on the men's side.

Cool opportunity for Williams to play with Tina Charles and Sylvia Fowles! Be interesting to see what the rotation of bigs looks like; you'd have to guess that Fowles is a shoe-in to start (though that could be my Lynx bias speaking), but things could go a bunch of different ways from there, with Charles, Williams, Dolson all players you'd likely primarily describe as centers.

Tina Charles will never ever claim to be a center even if it is best for her in certain lineups.

Looks like Dawn is going with:
Canada/Ogunbowale
DeShields/Sykes
Collier/Samuelson
Charles/Dolson
Fowles/Williams

Nelson-Ododa saw time early while Sessions only played garbage time. Given the players available, her rotation makes sense although she was trying some interesting combinations, including the no point guard lineup.

Elizabeth Williams played 10 minutes as the United States beat Canada 67-46 to win AmeriCup. In the loss, ex-Oregon State player Jamie Weisner had 12 points and 7 rebounds.
http://www.fiba.basketball/womensamericup/2019/game/2909/Canada-USA#|tab=boxscore

As I complained about earlier, if the senior men's team could have put together a strong enough team to win the World Cup, the United States would have been the holders of every single available FIBA title at the same time, but now they will have to wait at least another four years. I am not sure that we have ever simultaneously held all the trophies and it would have been a tremendous accomplishment.

Sofia Roma had 2 points in 3 minutes as Puerto Rico lost the bronze medal game 95-66 to Brazil. Ex-DII player Dayshalee Salaman had 15 points. In the win, WNBA player Damiris Dantas had 28 points, 9 rebounds, and 8 assists and ex-WNBA player Erika De Souza had 16 points and 10 rebounds.

I also wrote about the games here as well as listed the groups for the next stage of Olympic qualifying, where the draw ended up spitting out the same groups as this tournament:
http://www.womensbasketball247.com/2019/09/americup-finals-september-29th/

Japan successfully defended their crown in Asia. I wrote about the last games in that tournament here:

More information about the USA Women's team for the rest of the year is now available:
https://www.usab.com/news-events/news/2019/10/wnt-ncaa-november-tour.aspx

Unfortunately, Chelsea Gray will miss the chance to play in Northern California, but will play in three other college tour games ahead of being a planned member of a team that will play three games against South American teams who are trying to join the United States in the Olympics.

Also as part of the new format, Mozambique will host Africa's tournament. New Zealand will host one Asia-Oceania tournament while Malaysia will host the other as a neutral site.

Chelsea Gray joined the United States team for their exhibition tour shortly after her wedding. The big news is that they lost their last exhibition to Oregon today. The team heads to Argentina next for games on Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday. The games do not mean anything for the team since they have already qualified for the Olympics, but the other teams are trying to advance to the final round. Sofia Roma was named to the Puerto Rico team as they play in the other group in Canada:

Barranquilla hosted the U17 Girl's South America Championship. Hosts Colombia beat Brazil for the championship as both teams qualified for next year's U18 Americas Championship with wins yesterday. Argentina took the last spot by beating Ecuador.
Final Standings:

Ecuador
Uruguay
Paraguay
Chile

Pre-Olympic qualification started in Asia-Oceania and I wrote about those games here:

One of the problems with new formats is financial and the Democratic Republic of Congo could not secure funding for Africa's pre-qualifying. I wrote about the one game that was played here:

The Olympic qualifying process was formalized today:

On the women's side, these groups will play in February:
http://www.fiba.basketball/images.fiba.com/Graphic/2/2/E/C/YuUccssmW06sOjl8w1xOvQ.png

The United States and Japan and two teams from their groups will qualify while the top three teams in the other groups will join them.

The last four spots on the men's side will go to the winners of these tournaments:
http://www.fiba.basketball/images.fiba.com/Graphic/0/0/8/8/MNvrgCMchkiajQqYKqA8gg.png

A bunch of Canadian players already announced their participation, but we will see how that goes by late June.

A few tidbits before the end of the year:

Luol Deng was elected president of the South Sudanese federation:
https://www.fiba.basketball/news/retired-nba-star-deng-voted-south-sudan-basketball-federation-president

If he can get other players in the diaspora to play for the team in the future, they could quickly improve their position in Africa.

Mike Fratello will take over from Jeff Van Gundy for the games played during the season:
https://www.usab.com/news-events/news/2019/12/m-americup-qualifying-coaches.aspx

Unlike Van Gundy, he did have past international experience before taking this position so he should be able to adapt quickly although Van Gundy was apparently an excellent motivator in this format so that side may be different.

The South American U17 Boy's Championship finished up over the weekend in Santiago, Chile. Brazil beat Argentina in a thriller to win the title, but both had already qualified for next year's U18 Americas Championship and it was Uruguay joining them for the last spot.
Final Standings:
Brazil
Argentina
Uruguay
Ecuador
Venezuela
Chile
