Two games among 4-1 teams. Virginia Tech @ UNC and Syracuse @ VT. Mathematically, at least one will lose, and I expect both VT and Syracuse will have two losses after this week.

Other tough match-ups for 4-1 teams -- Louisville hosts NC State (3-2) on Thursday.

Duke and Virginia have relatively easy schedules -- although in ACC play anything is possible. UNC has only one game on the schedule.

Isn't there a way they can all lose?

Yes, there is a way for all of UNC, Virginia Tech and Syracuse to lose. VT beats Carolina tonight; Syracuse beats VT on Saturday, after losing at home to Miami on Thursday.

Well VT not doing their job. Getting crushed yet again. The emergence of VT as a power was greatly overstated.

There's no way anyone can tell me Virginia Tech is a top ten team nationally. They have gotten clocked by Virginia and North Carolina now. They're looking more and more like a middle of the pack type team in the ACC, something like an 11-7, 12-6 record in the ACC regular season. I think being in the top 15-20 would even be generous for them in the polls the way they looked against Virginia and North Carolina.

Wake on a roll. With only 3 points in first 11 minutes against UVA, they’re a only down 32-9 with about 5 left in first half.

They're bottom-tier-of-ACC bad when both Robinson and Alexander-Walker are off the floor, as was the case for a while in that game. Now, without Horne, they've got, what, seven playable guys? A bunch of guards and Blackshear. Next year's team could be truly dire if Alexander-Walker goes pro (to say nothing of the annual "Will Buzz leave?" rumors).

They still might be ranked decently high if they bounce back. As of now, it looks like there are six legitimately really good teams, then a dropoff - Duke, UVA, Tennessee, Michigan, Michigan State and Gonzaga. That's why there are teams at the bottom of the top 10 that make you say "Them?" Teams 7-15 are a big jumble. VT is in that jumble right now.

Also not helping them is that the referees aren't as sympathetic to the "Drive to the basket, launch yourself at the nearest defender and hope for a call" offense as they have been in recent years.

It pains me to say it but Carolina is playing good basketball right now, especially when they're hitting the three ball.

Shouldn’t the NCAA have said bye when it became evident the “school “ cared more about athletics than academics? (Sorry Steven43)

Maybe, but UNC doesn't belong in the conversation with those 6 teams yet (and frankly, I'd kick out overachieving Michigan St as well).

UNC needs to gain some consistency. Some folks went gaga over their win at home against tired, banged up Gonzaga, and then UNC got spanked by Kentucky and Louisville soon after. I don't know if we should go gaga over a home win against shorthanded VaTech, either.

I put UNC with Kentucky in the "Could be really dangerous if they get their freshmen going" tier. Still a step below the top six, but they're probably going to be 7-8 at the end of the year.

When Va Tech is hot from 3 point range, they can beat anyone, but their shooting is not consistent - it was bad against UVA and UNC; but can (and has, for example their win at UVA last year) be phenomenally great on occasion. When hot, they can beat anyone.

I'm not sure Coby White could be "going" much more than he is. I mean, he had 27 points, 7 boards, 6 assists, and 4 steals against Va Tech. He was the first Carolina player to lead the team in points, rebounds, assists, and steals in a game since Joe Forte did it in 2001. He's pretty much their best player at this point.

[2]Duke (4-1) (-21) hosts [84]Georgia Tech (2-3) (12:00, ACCNE)
[75]Notre Dame (1-4) (+13) hosts [1]Virginia (4-1) (1:00, CBS)
[30]NC State (3-2) (-6) hosts [47]Clemson (1-3) (2:00, ACCNE)
[18]Louisville (4-1) (-11) hosts [65]Pittsburgh (2-3) (2:00, ACCNE)
[153]Wake Forest (1-4) (-1) hosts [106]Boston College (1-4) (4:00, ACCNE)
[7]Virginia Tech (4-1) (-9) hosts [38]Syracuse (4-1) (8:00, ESPN)

For the teams currently atop the conference standings, Syracuse has the toughest task traveling to Blacksburg to play Virginia Tech. Tech has not been impressive against quality competition so they need to make a statement against Syracuse. This game is a toss up IMO with Vegas favoring VT by 6 points.

On paper, Duke, Virginia and Louisville should win with little difficulty but that is why the games are played on the court. The question is will they cover the spread? But that discussion belongs in a different thread.

Yeah, at least when there's that much time. The appropriate window (if at all) might be something like 3-6 seconds.

It's been a while since I've seen a team blow a game like that. Wow. Had a 6-point lead with 26 seconds left, and missed 4 straight free throws to lose on a three-pointer at the buzzer. It's as if "Clemsoning" moved indoors.

Can’t recall an 80+% FT shooter missing 4 straight at the end of a game. But that defines Clemson b-ball. Of course, fouling on the previous possession that early is stupid, particularly if you’re depending on good FT shooting by your own team.

I think we just saw a real choke job by Brownell.
