DT could jump too and he was only 6'4" https://youtu.be/E1VE3OyngcE

When I saw him trip on Phil Spence's shoulder in 74, I thought I'd never seen anyone up get so high https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0pTe_AkrVSc
Compared to Zion, it was pedestrian.

Oh I think DT could jump with Zion....it's just that Zion is flyin' with about 100 more pounds than DT was......Zion's moves are therefore more visually stunning. Off top of my head, I think DT's vertical was measured at NCSU as 44-45 or so.

I am not sure by Zion is probably only 6’ 5”. Zion’s strength as a dunker is his ability to extend his arm and complete the dunk with incredible power. Zion can not only jump but has amazing body control.

Zion has the advantage of over 45 years of human evolution. We've come a long way, baby! Hmm, perhaps using an old cigarette ad jingle isn't appropriate?

Evolution requires that the backboards be padded better!

That's going to be one helluva mutation. Has the backboard's genome even been mapped yet?

That trip over Phil Spence remains the single most astonishing thing I’ve ever seen on a basketball court. I was afraid that Thompson had been killed. It was that bad. Spectacular athletic ability can lead to spectacular injury.

T...I was afraid that Thompson had been killed. ....
I thought the same thing.

Westwood folklore has it that volleyball icon Karch Kiraly was once seen putting a quarter on top of one of the backboards in Pauley Pavilion, and none of the UCLA basketball players could get it.

David was craaaazy athletic. Maybe the greatest hops ever seen on a basketball court. I remember watching him when I was in middle school in the 80’s and he was making a comeback with Seattle. I was so excited to see him back on the court and playing at a high level. Sadly,it only lasted about a year before he fell from grace again. I was so bummed out that he couldn’t sustain it.

Does anybody else find it hilarious that Zion doesn’t jump at all when he shoots threes? The guy has a 45 inch vertical and can hit his head on the backboard, but he shoots threes like a 70 year old man at the Y with arthritis.

I just figured he has too much spring in his legs and can't damped it to shoot a jumper like a normal player.

It’s not like the defense is going to be up on him and take a chance on him driving to the basket.

I was in the gym when that happened.* We were so relieved when he reentered the arena with a bandaged head.

*I and about 10 million other people were there apparently. It was a packed house.

I was watching on TV. Billy Packer was doing color. He just screamed a long “AARG” at the top of his lungs into his mic.

I will not claim to have been there....but I do remember where I was. Scary. DT was pretty much loved by all fans.....

Ironically, Norman Sloan had driven through my parent's driveway (it connected one street with another) - earlier that season.....looking for his lost retriever....it was so funny, it happened right after the Norm Sloan TV Show had come on (recorded obviously). I felt like being in the Twilight Zone....

I was watching with one of my friends that day. He is a die hard Carolina fan but not your typical cheat fan. He really liked DT and was really concerned. Matter of fact, I think I saw a tear in his eye when David returned to the arena. That play was one scary moment. GoDuke!

DT was looked at differently. Quiet, graceful, scary athleticism. Different time too. Very different.

Only one ACC team went to the NCAAs...State, Maryland and Carolina were all top 5 pretty much all season...for a couple of seasons then. Those were the days when the rivalries inside the league didn't turn to the hatred there is now. Sure, there was the Art Heyman flare up in the 60s, and so on...but generally the league pulled for whoever the lone representative was in the NCAAT. I heard cheers of A-C-C in Reynolds Coliseum when the Dean coached Olympic team had try out games and other games there preparatory for the Olympics...that was with 4 Heels on the 12 man roster.

Would never happen today. Frankly I liked those days better, as far as the vitriol.

In those days emotions and opinions had more gradations than either love it or hate it. The either/or -- love/hate paradigm seems to have overtaken all of society.
