JJ scored his 10,000th NBA point today with a nice 18 foot jumper. The guy is aging very well and has a chance to have his highest scoring year.

Btw, I thought this deserved its own thread but if it belongs in the Dukies in the NBA thread, feel free to move.

Congrats to JJ... I still remember watching him in the 2002 McDonald's all American game...

Nice work, JJ!

Apparently, he is the 12th Dukie to hit 10k. Who were the first 11?

My guesses without looking it up:

Hill
Brand
Boozer
Laettner
Maggette
Deng

Has Kyrie had time to get there?

Maybe Dunleavy.

I doubt Battier got there. He was the no-stats all star, after all.

So there must be 3-4 players from before the K era to round out the list.

How about:
Jeff Mullins
G-man
Johnny D
Ferry

If this site is to be believed https://basketball.realgm.com/ncaa/conferences/Ivy-League/14/Duke/31/nba-players then the list is:

Irving
Hill
Boozer
Mullins
Maggette
Brand
Deng
Marin
Laettner
J.J.
Gminski
Dunleavy

Good call on Mullins and G-man. Looks like the other was Marin.

I checked, and per Basektball reference:

JD clocked in at 5,984
Ferry got 6,439

Congrats to Duke’s career leading scorer on joining a list of elite NBA players.

Congrats to JJ. He has really worked hard over the years.

And if that is his career 3-point shooting percentage it's pretty darned good, especially given the defensive attention a guy like JJ gets on the perimeter.

Jeff Mullins played most of his NBA career at Golden State, at a time when NBA games on the west coast might as well have been played on Mars. But for four or five years in the late 1960s and early 1970s, he was one of the best basketball players on the planet.

The planet being Earth, of course.

I remember JJ's famous game against texas when the collective inhale of the crowd, every time he launched a 3, was as exciting as these Zion "incoming" expectations.

Kind of a reverse hush fell/falls over the crowd.

Congratulations JJ! And sit on that, old tired haters!

Looks like he is tied with Boozer for third in scoring average, behind only Grant Hill and Kyrie Irving (K’s best NBA player and his heir apparent).

I figure Kyrie will move to #1 on this list in the next half decade

First, a salute to JJ. If every NBA player had his work ethic and desire/ability to improve, there'd be a lot more guys being compared to MJ.

But, as your footer indicates, I was blown away that Kyrie had already gotten there. If he has a decent run of health and keeps the fire in his belly, he should be the first to 20K.

Health is the key with him. In Kyrie's first 7 years in the league, he only topped 60 games 3 times. If he could get to the point where his health allowed him to play 70+ games every year, the sky would be the limit. If he plays 70+ games, he should easily score 1600+ points (that would be a 23ppg average). If he played another 8 years (to about age 35), he would likely be somewhere in the top 25 scorers in the history of the game.

Seeing this got me thinking about which programs have produced the most 10,000 point scorers.

I looked on Basketball Reference and here's what I found:

School
# of 10k Scorers

UNC
15

Duke
12

UCLA
12

Kentucky
9

UConn
8

Illinois
8

Arizona
7

Kansas
7

Michigan
7

Michigan St.
7

Ohio St.
7

Indiana
6

By no means is this an exhaustive list, I just checked some of the more historically renowned CBB programs. Given current recruiting trends, have to imagine Duke and Kentucky will make up some ground and maybe take that top spot in the not-too-distant future. But already this shows that the old adage about Duke not producing good pros was complete hogwash.

Congrats JJ!

I see Bob Verga at #2 in scoring average at 20.2 points.

Which brings up an interesting question. Most of Verga's points were in the ABA and his brief foray into the NBA was not successful.

Do we discount ABA stats? Disregard them entirely?

Verga was the best long distance shooter I have ever (in person) seen.
His main problem was that he isn't much taller than me and I'm not tall.
No - don't disregard the ABA - if you do, there are a number of very great players (for example Dr. J) that you are dissing.
