Penny Marshall has died. If you were a child of the 70s and 80s, you watched Laverne and Shirley. If you are a child of the 90s and 2000s, you saw her as one of the finest directors of her generation -- Big, A League of Their Own, Jumpin' Jack Flash, Cinderella Man, and Awakenings (nominated for best picture).

Sad. And the character started on Happy Days IIRC.

Let's all open a bottle of Shotz beer in her memory.

She was hilarious. I didn’t realize that she was married to Rob Reiner for a while. A friend met her several times and said she was incredibly down to earth.

I LOVED Laverne and Shirley. One of the funniest shows ever. I still have my L&S Viewmaster reels. Penny Marshall had some great ideas with Big and League of Their Own. Hollywood needs someone like her to breathe some original ideas into today's films.

I was born in '91 and only know her from L&S. I had no idea she was a director

"Laverne has died"? Come on, Jason. Penny Marshall (1943-2018)

If you are a child of the 90s and 2000s, you saw her as one of the finest directors of her generation -- Big, A League of Their Own, Jumpin' Jack Flash, Cinderella Man, and Awakenings (nominated for best picture).

She produced Cinderella Man (directed by Ron Howard) and directed Renaissance Man.

There was talk in another thread about Oscar bait and box office bait and the movies you remember. Penny Marshall directed a couple of movies I remember. A League of Their Own is also very rewatchable and a gold mine of character actresses in supporting parts: Bitty Schram, Anne Ramsay, Ann Cusack, Renee Coleman, Kathleen Marshall (Garry's daughter and Penny's niece) and Tracy Reiner (Penny's daughter and Rob Reiner's stepdaughter).
