We are definitely going to have a much better idea where some teams stand going into the new year.

Is State going to be able to beat some top teams again this year?
Is Duke the class of the NCAA?
Is Wake going to get blasted by UVa, Duke, Carolina and everyone else?
Can BC beat some decent teams?
Which awful horrible no good program is going to win?

[46]Miami (-19) hosts [262]Houston Baptist (7:00, ACCNE)

The only game this week that matters. Can Houston Baptist go 2-1 against the ACC?

Which awful horrible no good program is going to win?

That’s easy: Carolina. It’s the same awful horrible no good program every year.

Putting everyone on notice here: The UVA-South Carolina game should definitely go on upset watch. Although USCE has disappointed greatly overall this season, they performed admirably @Michigan, and will play tough pressure D. Without Clark, we're somewhat limited from a ballhandling/pressure breaking standpoint beyond Jerome. Further, we tend to play a little "rusty" coming off exam break over the Bennett tenure, Guy and Jerome have both cooled somewhat from 3 after a really hot start to the season, and it's a road game sure to bring out a tough environment (as tough as you can get with winter break beginning, anyway).

I'll be disappointed, certainly, but not shocked if we (UVA) slip up on Wed - especially if USCE can have even a semi-decent night shooting the ball from deep (somewhere in the 35-40% range or better).

I don't know what the E is for ...oh wait, I'm assuming USC-East....hah, just came to me. Anyway, I agree SC played excellent at Michigan. Two of their best players, Silva and Kotsar (Silva killed us couple years ago) had been terrible for reasons no one knew. They re-emerged versus Michigan. That makes the Cocks a much better team.

Why would USC need the East attached to it? Just call them Carolina and they can still 9f themselves!

PS. Grew up in Charleston, SC and learned how to hate on Carolina from an early age. East, West, North or South they are all Carolina and they can all 9f themselves!

Playing at USC-E will be a challenge but imagine if you had to play them in Greenville, SC with a buncha UVA-hating Hokies in the crowd, too. Just sayin'.

Hasn't UVA been a sturdy ball-handling team the past few years without Clark? You're #4 nationally in turnover pct this season but you were #5 last season and #18 the season before. To me, with Clark out, you should be fine reverting to a Jerome and Guy backcourt.

Not saying UVA won't get beat in this spot, but I've never thought of you guys as a team that struggles to break the press. I've only seen UVA struggle against Jevon Carter (but he's a unicorn/freak) and that Elite 8 game where Cuse sped you up.

Man, Syracuse has been such a disappointment. I was really expecting them to be in the upper third of the conference. Wonder if Tyus Battle regrets coming back.

In some general ACC news this week, ol' Roy just re-upped for 8 years, which is impressive for a 68 year old coach. Amazingly enough he's not in the top 25 of the highest-paid coaches: https://twitter.com/AdamZagoria/status/1075440388817727488

You have to love Carolina announcing Roy's extension on signing day for football. LOL! Priorities.

There is a lot of outside compensation for Roy, namely personal deals with Nike and Learfield. Normally coaches get a cut from shoe and apparel deals funneled through the athletic department and not as a separate personal deal. That compensation is not disclosed.

yeah, but Coach K's SALARY is almost $9 mil, and I have no doubt that's the tip of the iceberg for him as well. Ol' Roy isn't even at $1 mil. Chump change given his achievements, which are enough IMO to put him right after K among active coaches.

Yea Roy gets bundles of cash and shoes from Nike. By not disclosing that improves his “awe shucks” routine. He probably gets ACC coffer kickbacks from Swofford😡

State was up big on Auburn to start, gave up a big run that saw Auburn briefly take the lead. State scored a few buckets to end the half up 8.

State showing that winning on the road in the ACC will not be easy (unless you are playing at Syracuse). The Pack is handling Auburn with some degree of ease. Up 12 with 3 minutes left. Markele Johnson looks like a stud and, somehow, Utah transfer Devon Daniels has 15 points... all in the 2nd half.

State’s helter-skelter defense will be tough this year. Teams will need discipline - hope Tre can handle it.

State tries to make it interesting, but downs #7 Auburn 78-71 despite shooting 12-22 from the line. Ugh! We almost shot better from beyond the arc (10-22).

NCSU is a giant that may finally be awakening from a long slumber. That would be great news for the ACC. We can’t have too many strong teams.

One more crazy NC State factoid...

This is the first non-conference win over a top-10 team since....beating Kentucky on 2/2/1987. To be honest, I don't recall State playing that many good teams at home over the past 30 years. I know we came close against Kansas a time or two, but other than that I just don't recall State getting very many good teams to visit.

BC with a nice come from behind for a road win at DePaul.

I think what I've learned from the non-conference is that the middle of the ACC (e.g. Cuse, Clemson, Miami) is disappointing but the bottom of the ACC (e.g. Pitt, BC, GaTech) is kind of frisky and won't be easy outs. The top of the ACC has been more or less as expected.

Maybe it was premature to anoint UNC after a home win against banged up, less motivated, flying coast-to-coast, trending downwards Gonzaga. Just saying...

In any case, if this result holds, Duke fans in NC hold the trash talk advantage again (if we ever lost it). Who cares about Gonzaga when you can say, "You guys lost to a team we beat by 40"
