Looking at Sagarin, and Temple record and opponents, looks like it will be a good game and a tough matchup.

Temple is 8-4 with some good wins and close losses. They appear to be a tough team so we need to get some players healthy and prepare for a tough team.

Raw statistics without context can be misleading, and I haven't watched any film clips yet, but the Temple quarterbacks have thrown 19 TDs and 18 INTs. That jumps out at me...

http://www.espn.com/college-football/team/stats/_/id/218

Starting quarterback Anthony Russo did not play in the season finale and was on the sidelines with a cast on his right hand. I did a Google search but couldn't find any updated information on his status.

Had forgotten this story -- in 1974, Terry Bradshaw's Steelers beat Joe Ferguson's Bills in a playoff game -- Ferguson had succeeded Bradshaw as QB at Shreveport's Woodlawn High.

Temple is better than I thought they were....and hoped they were. They had a shoot out at UCF and lost 52-40 although the game was a lot closer than that and Temple led a lot of that game. They also lost a 45-35 shootout with BC. They beat a good Cincy team.

DaughterPk’s school is in the playoffs, gotta choose between our bowl or gambling on making the Natty game with her the next week. Oddly, I would miss more work doing our game than hers. So how many RVs will be going from Alabama to Miami to Santa Clara over a 10-day period ... only 44 hours by car from Miami to Santa Clara ...

Weezie, nice to see you’re up and at em this morning. As a Duke alum who was born and and raised and still lives in Shreveport, I am certainly available to offer assistance to anyone coming here for the I-Bowl. I am working on a post about Shreveport and our Bowl and hope to have it up later today. I understand that there may not be a great influx of folks to Shreveport right after Christmas to watch our team that got its ears pinned back against Wake. But I would love to have the opportunity to meet and hangout with anyone from the DBR community who can make the trip. I have never been to a college bowl game (aside from the I-Bowl) but I have been to a handful of Final Fours. I too would like to know where the team is staying (I’m guessing the Hilton downtown). I got an email yesterday about the pregame party near the stadium. Is there any kind of gathering or party the evening before the game?

Correct. February, 1994. It might have been Grant Hill's jersey retirement ceremony. Cosby enjoyed hamming it up with the crowd. Not nearly as meaningful of a game as the Mark Macon one but still a lot of fun.

"Daniel Jones is an NFL QB prospect for Duke, a team that was outscored 94-13 in its final two games. David Cutcliffe will have his guys ready to finish the season out on a much higher note. Geoff Collins has been a smooth transition from the days of Matt Rhule for Temple. The Owls shook off an 0-2 start to win eight of its final 10. Those two losses came to UCF and Boston College, both on the road."

This year's Independence Bowl marks 20 years since Cut's first victory as a head coach, and one of his finest victories ever. Tuberville left Ole Miss for Auburn at the end of the regular season, Cut was hired December 2, and he got Ole Miss prepared in 26 days and they beat Spyke Dykes's Texas Tech team: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1998_Independence_Bowl

Just crazy, to swoop in (in December) to a new team that just lost its coach and get it prepped and win a bowl game against a quality opponent (TTU ended #34 in the SRS that year; Ole Miss #51).

I agree with your point of who's on the rise, who is not....BUT:
In a month, that could all be different. Temple might have gone stale, we might have rallied on the injury front. Or maybe Temple will lose their coach before then. LOT can change between now and then.

I completely agree with Reilly and HereBefore...IF (big if) we get all our guys back, Cut has shown that he prepares for bowls very well.
Teams have learned to defend us by only rushing the bare minimum of guys (often three), dropping the rest into coverage. A hobbled Jones couldn't take advantage of that vs Wake.
I suspect Jones and Humphreys will be back, have no notion of JGH...

Thought JGH had MCL tear. No surgery and typically 3-4 weeks before playing again (at least that’s been common with HS players). If the injury was just the MCL, would think he’d play in the bowl game unless he’s sitting out for draft reasons.

We also dropped 20? 30? spots when we lost to Wake. A model that puts that much weight on a potential outlier is prone to error. The biggest question is how we respond with a month off.

I think we dropped from 42 to 60 in Sagariin. Maybe from 40 to 49 in SRS. Which (if either) is too much in your estimation?

It was a goggle-adjusting loss (worst in 11 years at Duke for Cut; Wake is no world-beater).

AGREE with your sentiment here^^^. At least a TD...not only will that be the return of two great linebackers, it will lift every players' spirits and confidence.

On another tangent, the article didn't mention what the Clemson and WF games might've done, or not done, to DJ's NFL chatter. He kind of burst onto the scene after the mega game versus that community college 8 miles down the road. I wondered if that burst had, well, burst.

And yes, i realize the NFL chatter started last year, and there was some early season some this year, but the cheats game had brought it back up.

DJ quote WRT skipping the bowl:

Daniel did answer a couple of questions about his draft thoughts. Here is the quote

“I’ve probably started to think about it more than I did before the Wake game,” Jones said. “I still have a whole lot of work to do and thought to do. I’m not anywhere near a decision there. I’m not sure I’ve done all the necessary homework to figured that out. Thought about it more. Not sure how close I am to really making a decision at this point.”

From what I know, he's compartmentalizing this very well. Never considered taking part in senior day activities. He's finishing up his degree this month so end of semester classwork is very important. He also wants Duke to finish this season strongly. As one of the captains, he's taking that leadership role seriously. He's very nonchalant about the NFL stuff, for now.

Because the coaching staff hit the road recruiting the morning after the Wake debacle, DJ and Cut haven't had a chance have the serious conversations they are going to have with the NFL feedback. I tend to believe he won't make a decision before the bowl game. Once his schoolwork is done and the game is done, he'll dive into that with Cut and his family.

Daniel did answer a couple of questions about his draft thoughts. Here is the quote

DJ quote WRT skipping the bowl:

“I certainly plan on playing and I will play in the bowl game,” Jones said. “I’ve never really considered that as something I’d want to do. We are going to finish this season.”

You're right that the article really doesn't address his draft considerations/prognostications and I'm happy those guys mentioned all stated they want to play in the bowl game.

I am too, and it seems to me, after observing the past two seasons, the NFL scouts and prognosticators are up and down on Daniel. Early last year, some buzz....then nothing during the losing streak. Early this year, some buzz....then with injury and more losing, it died down. He explodes on the cheats, and there's buzz.....then the Clemson game and the Wake situation....seems to die down again.

Generally you can't believe what the scouts have to say...not because they're dishonest, but because they don't like to publicize what guys they really like, who might be a sleeper, etc,..

For the few and the proud who are coming to Shreveport for the I-Bowl, I want to offer my assistance in any way necessary. I know Shreveport isn’t a destination city and I know the I-Bowl isn’t what most of us hoped for but it is a bowl and I think Temple is pretty good this year. And on the bright side, you don’t have to say you’re going to the weed eater bowl (former sponsor). In case you don’t know, there is an interesting story behind the Walk-Ons sponsor which relates to college hoops: https://walk-ons.com/story.

Here is a little background on Shreveport:
Shreveport is in the northwest corner of the state, about ten miles from the Texas border, and much closer to Dallas (180 miles) than Baton Rouge or New Orleans. Shreveport is located on one side of the Red River and Bossier City sits on the other side. Bossier City is home to Barksdale Air Force Base where the Eighth Air Force is headquartered (mostly B52s). During the Civil War, Shreveport was a Confederate stronghold and briefly became the Confederate capital after Robert E. Lee’s surrender. Civil War battles were fought all over this area (Vicksburg, Mansfield).
In 1933, Bonnie and Clyde were killed just down the road https://www.fbi.gov/history/famous-cases/bonnie-and-clyde
Shreveport has a rich musical history and the Louisiana Hayride (held at Shreveport’s Municipal Auditorium and broadcast on KWKH radio) was where many country music acts got their start (Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Jim Reeves, Johnny Horton, Floyd Cramer, Slim Whitman, etc.). https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=nahHWEOpCvo In 1954, Elvis Presley (who was 19 yo) made his debut at the Louisiana Hayride https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=bLaPnpjw-pc.
Hirsch Coliseum, the domed venue right next to Independence Stadium, was built a long time ago and has hosted concerts, basketball games, rodeos, etc for many years. One of my favorite trivia questions relates to this venue: In 1957, a ten year old boy from a tiny town in East Texas (close to Shreveport) was at a Lawrence Welk concert with his parents at the Hirsch. Eight years later he returned to see a rock band there. Many years after that, the band he went to see was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The boy went on to himself become a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of one of the greatest bands of all time. He gave the induction speech for the first band. Who was the boy and who were the bands? Answer:https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=7ioQa26gDc4&t=9s
Shreveport has had its share of prominent athletes and a plethora of quarterbacks:
Terry Bradshaw (Steelers)
Joe Ferguson (Bills)
David Woodley (super bowl QB Dolphins)
Stan Humphries (Chargers)
Bert Jones (Colts) grew up right down the road in Ruston
Doug Williams (Redskins) played at Grambling (by Ruston)
And although he is not from here, Doug Pederson (Eagles coach) was the head coach of tiny Calvary Baptist Academy in Shreveport from 2005-2008 (I know that’s hard to believe).

Robert Parish (Celtics)

Hal Sutton
David Toms

A couple of things you may not know about Bradshaw. In high school, he was the national record holder in the javelin (https://www.golfchannel.com/video/feherty-terry-bradshaws-other-surprising-sport). This was what he was known for. When he went to Louisiana Tech and played football, he was initially the backup QB to this guy lol (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=yFlr19bhncQ).

My personal favorites would be:
Breakfast—Strawn’s on Youree. Nothing healthy here but one of the local favorites
Lunch—For a high end lunch, try superior steakhouse. If you’re still here Friday, go to 2Johns right across the Red River (I know the owner so I can help you here). Superior Grill (Mexican food) is the most popular restaurant in town and is great for lunch or dinner—try to go early to avoid the wait. You can also eat late there so it would be a fun place to go after the game. One word of caution—the generic frozen margaritas come out of a machine and are killers. I prefer their top shelf.
Walk-Ons is a sports bar and is quite popular.
Fairfield grocery and Cush’s grocery are both very good. Cush’s almost always has gumbo.
Dinner:
There are 2 high end casino restaurants that are good—Jack Binion’s Steakhouse at the Horseshoe and The Vintage at the El Dorado.
I prefer:
2Johns has good food as does the Superior Steakhouse. The latter is a bigger venue with a fabulous bar, wine selection, cigar bar, etc.
The food at Bella Fresca is good.
Chianti’s is a popular Italian restaurant.
Frank’s Louisiana Kitchen and El Cabo Verde are less expensive and popular and in the south part of town.
Expect to drop some coin at some of these so check out their websites/menu.

Feel free to message me if you have questions! Hope some of you can make it!

I would love to go to the game but can't this year. I did buy a $50 ticket from the GoDuke site and donated it to put a deserving local fan in the stands with a Duke hat on. I hope others can find some small way to support our Devils if you are not able to attend in person. Go Duke! Side benefit - there is no handling charge for purchasing donated tickets.

Spurrier hung out through the bowl and our minds wandered; in 2012 Cincy had an interim coach and seemed pretty focused; Cut took over Ole Miss in Dec 1998 and won ...

I would guess the most commonly-occurring fact pattern is the 2012 Cincy/2019 Temple one ... where a head coach bolts before a bowl but leaves assistants behind to run the show ... would be interesting to see how often that has happened in the past ten years and whether the team is considered to have under-performed relative to expectation in the bowl ...

yeah, Spurrier's body hung around, but his mind certainly wasn't in it...hope this works out well for us. I'd have to think there'll be uncertainty at Temple unless they elevate an assistant coach into the job permanently, which they may well might.

...the main thing I begrudge is his helping Barry Wilson get the job. Wilson was terrible, immediately went about dismantling the air ball passing attack...even as he inherited many of the players. I am ticked at Wilson for that....

Meanwhile, I think this is two coaching losses at Temple in the last 3 seasons. I think Ruhle left for Baylor after the 16 season.......

One of the great mistakes a lot of athletic directors make is belief in the Osmosis Theory of Coaching, i.e. by sitting near or next to a great coach, an assistant somehow becomes imbued with the magic of the master.
Works sometimes, but not that often. (I'm looking at you, Bill Guthridge, though that decision was cleverly made by Dean himself).

This is true, and Frank's tenure was a disaster, but Franks wasn't taking over a rolling train with two more years of Dave Brown and Randy Cuthbert and so on........Wilson's big crime to me was not only losing, but doing so while changing the very offensive mindset that had lifted Duke up under Spurrier. There is a failure to create a winning team...but a worse crime to ruin one.

In the future, could you please consider adding a little context to a post like this? For instance, simply adding the words "due to weather" at the end of your statement about the banquet being cancelled would have provided some clarity as to the reason why. After reading what you wrote and before clicking on the linked story, I feared the event had been cancelled due to some unrest or something in the football program. Maybe it's just me, but after that awful beat down by a so-so Wake team to end the season, I'm concerned about the state of football team and seeing stuff like this on the board without proper context just plays into that.

Wilson had the nerve to show up in Indy for the ‘91 Final Four. I was tempted to relay the above message to him personally as he was exiting a restaurant, but decided discretion was the better part of valor. Though truth be told, I’d be lying if I said I haven’t regretted my constraint from time to time over the years.

I always felt Heath Shuler’s holdout beat out Heath Shuler and allowed Gus to play ahead of him. Back in the day, the Redskins had a reputation for opening up their pocketbook and Shuler tried to take more than deserved. Shuler was a total bust as an NFL QB.

Thank you for the correction, and apologies to "young Patrick" as Spurrier would call him. Gus head-butted wall; Patrick was from Bert Jones's hometown.

I don't know how I could confuse the two:

Gus - 1994-98 Redskins - 19-26-1 w/ Skins - 6-3/237 white guy - Tulsa - #12
Pat - 2002-05 Redskins - 10-14 w/ Skins - 6-2/225 white guy - Tulane - #11

They both seemed earnest and likable and hard-working, and their lack of success with the Redskins perhaps due more to what was not around them.

On the way home from work today, I caught Jim Rome's one minute opinion on the sports world.
He says to forget about this bowl and that, but it is the Independence Bowl that is the one to watch.
Duke vs. Temple because of the Temple interim Coach.
He plays a snippet of the public pep-talk.
And says that Temple should hire the guy.

I don't know if the guy can coach, but he can certainly get some attention.

From Chris Fallica on Twitter: "David Cutcliffe is 8-2 ATS in bowl games as a head coach (4-1 at Duke, 4-1 at Ole Miss). As an underdog, Cutcliffe’s teams are 6-1 ATS with four outright wins. The one ATS loss – the unmentionable events in 2012."

Also from Fallica, answering -- to a degree -- a question asked upthread: "Last year there were 6 teams in early bowl games (pre-New Year's Eve) that entered bowls in midst of a coaching change (FSU, A&M, Oregon, UCLA, Ariz St, SMU). Those 6 went 1-5. Only FSU, which was a massive favorite vs USM won. App St, Utah St, Temple all fit mold this year."

My first thought exactly.....this hiring seems to kind of take the air out of the rah rah balloon.....it's like a current flowing in the other direction. It's a bit of a confusing signal to the players, regardless of how the interim (and maybe new) coach try and downplay it.

As we saw in the WF game, intangibles can play a massive role in the outcome of games. They always do in bowl games (the dis-respected team almost always beats the power team in a bowl when that power team expected to be in the playoffs, etc...).

This makes me feel instantly better about the intangibles. At least for now.

You must've misunderstood my point. I know he was all rah rah fired up in his presser. At that time, he probably thought he'd have a shot at the head job. I certainly bet he didn't think a coaching decision would be made this soon. There's a new guy now....in the mix...and even if he's not involved in bowl prep, he'll probably be talking to existing assistants and so on through the process. This throws a new dynamic into it.

If you're going to make the case that the Temple interim coach's enthusiasm is a good intangible for Temple - and I agree it could be - then you have to recognize another intangible - the potential impact of this announcement now. I think dynamic B mitigates dynamic A to an extent.

That said of course Duke needs to be ready. We saw last time out what "not ready" looks like.....

Per the SRS, yes. https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/years/2018-ratings.html

Temple now #48, and Duke #49 (and WFU #69). Temple and Duke flipped spots since 12/2 ... maybe Temple opponent Navy sticking with Army caused that flip?

On the individual OSRS and DSRS numbers, it looks like the strongest units in the bowl game are, in order:

Duke's defense
Temple's offense
Temple's defense
Duke's offense

If our D is as healthy as can be -- BH and JGH flying around -- that would help. Would love for our D to be the strongest unit on the field that day.
If our O can do more than the 6.5 ppg it put up on average the last two weeks, that would help. I hope we see some QH packages.
I'm scared of getting crushed in the kicking games -- Temple has a good return man.

Temple does score a lot of points. And Duke gave up a lot, but there's a chance Duke's D is much healthier than it's been since early season, when they did not give up a lot of points. I don't think there's much chance we put the defense on the field that shut down NW.....but I think Duke will put a better D on the field than late season.

And yes, I'd say Temple is better than WF. That said, I'm not sure Temple will play as well in the bowl game as WF did against Duke. And I am pretty confident Duke won't play anything like they did against WF.

Deon Jackson and Leonard Johnson are just two examples of young leadership on the 2018 Duke football team. The classmates are in their second years at Duke, Jackson as a true sophomore and Johnson as a redshirt freshman. Both have played enormous roles this season, and with Duke’s appearance in the Walk-On’s Independence Bowl quickly approaching, their coaches will look for them to lead one final time this season.

He didn’t play in the regular-season finale, a 57-7 rout of UConn. Russo had hurt a thumb the previous game and had a cast on it. The cast is off, and he says he is ready to lead the Owls in the bowl game.

Russo threw for 13 TDs and 13 interceptions in 10 games. He threw multiple interceptions in four games including a season high three interceptions in a 24-17 overtime victory against Cincinnati.

I think Cut has prepared the team very well for all 5 of his Duke bowls - face it, Duke was pretty big underdogs to Cincy, Texas A&M and Arizona State - and the Devils had a real chance to win all three of those games. They came out on fire against Cincy and A&M. And of course, they've won their last two....

I fully expect him to play, but given the nature of football, I wouldn't blame him if he didn't.

This is the update from ESPN on Daniel's draft status:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Daniel Jones, Duke

Year: Fourth-year junior | Ht/Wt: 6-foot-5, 220 | Career starts: 35

Total QBR: 68.0 (42nd in FBS) | Full stats

Who he is and where he ranks

Keep an eye on quarterback whisperer David Cutcliffe's latest project, who could be the biggest beneficiary of Herbert's staying in school. The Duke coach has raved about Jones, a three-year starter who took a big step forward in 2018. His career numbers don't scream first-rounder -- 47 touchdown passes and 27 interceptions, while completing 59.5 percent of his passes, with a QBR of 60.7 -- but Jones didn't play with high-end talent. He's a dual-threat signal-caller. Jones rushed for 186 yards (and threw for 361) in the Blue Devils' win over rival North Carolina. Need proof of his toughness? Jones broke the collarbone in his left, non-throwing arm in September and missed only two games. If he chooses to forgo his final season of eligibility, Jones is expected to be in the mix to be the top QB off the board.

Dittos to all that ^^^^ - but I think he'll go now that Herbert at Oregon is not going. From a football standpoint, I think he'd develop more next year in college than carrying a clipboard in the NFL. From a financial standpoint, he may not have a choice but to go.

Counterpoint: he will start his career one year earlier, and seems unlikely to rise above the second best QB prospect next year. Add to that the chance of career ending or altering injury, and I would be sort of surprised if he doesn't go.

Two other points - I find it baffling that he is rated so high, but I suspect others know better than I do. Also, I would bet that a year on an NFL roster "holding a clipboard" would lead to much, much more development than a year in most college programs.

Regardless, I hope he has a great game today.

I agree with you on everything except the "holding a clipboard" part. Backups in the NFL do not get a lot of practice reps. Starters in college get a lot of practice reps and game reps. If you think you have significant improvement to make to be an NFL contributor you are better off staying in college. Going to the NFL too early might mean you're out of the league before you have the chance to improve enough to hang around. If you are "NFL ready" then entering the draft seems like the practical thing to do.

With Howard coming back, the 2020 NFL draft is going to be loaded with QBs. If Jones goes now, he has a shot at being a late first or 2nd round pick. If he waits a year, he goes behind Tua, Howard, Jake Fromme, Shae Patterson, and perhaps Jacob Eason (formerly GA, now Washington).
