And we were worried about this class. 😂. Add a big and this class looks great. Joey Baker appears to be a redshirt according to Coach K’s press conference. Welcome to the Brotherhood Mr. Ellis.

I think it's wonderful that Boogie Ellis is coming to Duke. But even if we add a big, I wouldn't say this class looks "great."

By "a big" I assume you mean Carey or Stewart or Hurt, which would give us at least one top 10 kid for the 9th year out of 10, but let's compare classes using RSCI rank (and assuming #5 Stewart):

2019: 5, 22, 49

2018: 1, 2, 4, 13, 37
2017: 1, 5, 7, 14, 59, 69
2016: 2, 3, 11, 14, 35, unranked
2015: 4, 13, 14, 21, unr
2014: 1, 7, 13, 24
2013: 3, 32, 34
2012: 12, 21
2011: 2, 28, 31, 49, 61
2010: 2, 32, unr
2009: 14, 18, 25(ish)
2008: 15, 66, 81
2007: 6, 18, 27
2006: 10, 20, 25, 28
2005: 1, 13, 39, 53, 60
2004: 18, 71
2003: 2
2002: 8, 11, 14, 21, 30
2001: 29
2000: 7, unr
1999: 3, 8, 16, 26, unr
1998: a top 5 guy, a top 10 guy, a top 15 guy and a top 25 guy

So, your proposed class is among Duke's worst 5 (maybe 6) classes in the last 22 years. If we don't get a top 10 big, this class would be in the bottom three. Considering how good Duke has been at recruiting, that's not terrible, but it's certainly not "great." Especially since next season's group of returning players won't be especially distinguished (compared to those in other "down" recruiting years). Put another way, if "we were worried about this class" (and I'm not saying I was), then we should still be worried.

I'm not saying this to be a downer, but we should at least temper expectations.

Agree with Kedsy, we've got a solid class that would be boosted if we're able to land a big, but it's pretty far below what our classes have been for the past several years. And we're going to need to replace a ton of talent once again. The good news is that our returning players - O'Connell, White, Javin, Bolden, Baker with at least a year practicing with the program - are much more capable of contributing than we've had in recent years. So I think we're seeing a progression away from wholesale OAD's, whether by choice or not, which is what many fans have been asking for.

Precisely, Kedsy. We are going to lose 3 starters guaranteed this year, possibly more. In this era where we lose our best players every year, we need to replace top 10 talent with top 10 talent to be a deep tournament team. While I'm happy we signed a good 4 year scorer in Boogie, adding someone ranked in the 35-40 range doesn't get me out of my seat.

Boogie is ranked where Joey Baker was ranked--and Joey won't play this year. He's ranked where Javin was ranked, who also didn't play as a frosh and will be a role player at best this year.

Let's be realistic- this is a solid add to the squad, but this isn't the type of player that's going to help us blow out Kentucky by 30 next year.

Who are our guys ranked 5. 22. And 49 next year?

Is Moore number 5 as a wing? Is Boogie is number 49? Who is number 22? Is this counting Baker???

Thanks for the help !!

From what I read Ellis is on the rise- but as you suggest- Duke will be a much different team next year and perhaps beyond. The last two recruits are unlikely OADs.

The OP was assuming we got Vernon Carey, sort of a best case scenario (there’s obviously no guarantee we land one of the bigs, but I would hope we get one). Carey is 5, Moore is 22, Ellis is 49.

Both Moore and Ellis are right on the edge of being five-star/four-stars depending on which recruiting service you look at.

Yes, 247 composite ranking (which averages several rankings) and can be a real time surrogate for RSCI has Boogie Ellis at 35. That's before the standard Duke commit bump :D

Dude hit 46% on his threes (taking 144 of them, a large sample size) in elite summer AAU ball. That's really impressive. He can fill it up from downtown and is quite good taking it to the rack as well (possesses a really nice in-the-lane floater). He is rocketing up the rankings (not even a top 150 prospect a year ago) and could maybe end the year as a Mickie Dee. Love seeing him pick the right shade of blue!!

Agreed, adding someone in the 35-40 range doesn't usually get me out of my seat. But unusual times call for unusual reactions. There simply aren't many available players left, let alone guards.

So for that reason, I'm out of my seat! Welcome, Boogie!

PS - I love having someone on the team named Boogie.

We need to disabuse ourselves of the notion that Hurt is a big, at least in the sense that Carey and Stewart are bigs. He's a skinny 6-9, with advanced ball skills but no real inclination to go inside and do the dirty work. He's more Dunleavy than Singler.

That's really encouraging news. While I haven't seen an official measurement, he has been noted for having long arms. That's no guarantee that he's going to be a good defender, but it helps. At 6'2", he's a certainly tall enough to guard defending point guards. With length, he might also be able to defend opposing scoring guards and some wings. That kind of shooting, combined with positional versatility on defense, could make for a deadly combo.

While far from a *done deal*, with one and done possibly ending by 2020, it's a real possibility that the guys this year (Zion/Barrett/Reddish) are Duke's last superstar (meaning likely top 5 draft pick) frosh. If so.... quite a way to wrap up that era.

Welcome to Duke, Boogie! Love this, as he's become a bit of a youtube fave of mine due to his beautiful stroke and NBA range already. (Seriously, he shoots from NBA range a lot in his videos.) I do think Boogie will eventually be ranked as a 5-star because it's not just catch-and-shoot threes that he's hitting. He routinely pulls up off the dribble and smoothly knocks down the deep three. A shooting talent like him that can also be a secondary creator deserves a top 25 ranking, imo.

Yep. Here is a link to his EYBL stats from this past summer: https://www.d1circuit.com/roster_players/24361448

He shot over 6 threes a game and nailed 46% of them.

It does look like the blowout of Kentucky played a role in Boogie's decision.

From the ESPN article about his commitment (http://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/25229762/rejean-boogie-ellis-mission-bay-calif-high-school-commits-duke):

"I really saw the way Coach lets his players play," Ellis said of the Kentucky game. "He told me he wants me to be one of those guys. Do some of the stuff Zion and Cam are doing, scoring the ball. He wants me to come in and score. He really painted a picture, and during the game, I really saw it, the way he lets them play and get up and down the floor."

Boogie has such deeeep range on his shot. I love watching his videos and seeing him launch from beyond the NBA 3-pt line (not pictured usually), swish.

Boogie definitely has an argument for being the best shooter in his class when you combine range + accuracy. He's a 5-star recruit, imo, and hopefully he'll make the McDonald's game along with Wendell.
