Basketball is back! And starting on a Tuesday this year (Friday tip-offs have been the recent norm), so it's more than just a weekend to get things going. Cupcakes abound, with only two teams predicted to have even close games. Let's take a look at the lineups - as always, all rankings/spreads are Pomeroy (which is higher on the ACC teams than many ranking systems, as reflected by 4 teams in the top 8 and 8 in the top 22) and all times are eastern.

Monday is dark. Everyone take care of those last few to do items before they get swallowed up by more important activities until the second week of April.

Tuesday has all the post-voting action a fan could want:

Glad to see NC State is working to improve that strength of schedule this season. ;)

Yuck. I see nothing there not involving Duke to waste time on. I will be looking for other games at the national level, or continuing to get those chores done until it gets better. I get that coaches want a few gimme's before getting competitive, but wow that's bad. Bring on the 20-game ACC schedule.

Florida/Florida St is a legit game. But as it overlaps at least partially with Duke I probably won't be watching much of it

Saturday[8]Syracuse (-22) hosts [208]Syracuse (7:00, ACCNE)

I don't know about the rest of y'all but I am betting the house on Syracuse winning this game.

In reference to the post about the matchups all being lousy. Other than Duke-Ky and the battle for the Sunshine state, there is no other matchup where an ACC team plays anyone ranked in the KenPom top 100. Carolina's match with #121 Wofford is the 3rd best contest of the week. Blech!

They should play that game in Greensboro.

(pfr, thanks for putting the list together. That is always a useful list every week of every season!)

12/20/17: North Carolina 75 vs. Wofford 79

Lightning may not strike twice but I'm sure hoping for an autumn atmospheric upheaval. :D

I don't know if it's wanting the "gimmies" for win-padding sake, moreso to extend the bench and get those younger guys some more experience (assuming that MOST teams aren't like Duke and primarily playing all frosh prominent roles). I know in Bennett's case specifically, he likes to play some of the smaller local schools and give them the scheduling opportunity that most P5 coaches won't. We've played ROAD games with George Washington, VCU, George Mason, and JMU in the last few years alone.

Yeah look for some serious smack talk from the Heels if they win this one. Brave of them to take on their rivals in a road game! BTW my Directv guide for the game says heels “seek revenge when they visit Wofford.” Ha ha

Or perhaps the rest of us need to step up our game so Jason and OPK aren't the only ones being awesome?

I just can't believe you guys aren't enthralled at UVA's revenge tour against every school in Baltimore County except for those guys. I think Tony is on the phone with the Johns Hopkins AD as we speak.

T 10.00, or so, Carolina up by 2. Why does UNC play an away game there? Sure they will win, but attendance, money (except for TV) makes no sense.

Decades of cheating and Carolina can only beat Wofford by 11.

After some first half struggles, State pours it on to beat Mt St Mary's 105-55

Pretty certain that scheduling Wofford home-and-home was done as a (fortunately for us, unsuccessful) recruiting ploy to try to land Zion Williamson.

Right, would have been a chance for all his local peeps to see him play.

UNC was the only team in the conference to fail to win by at least 12 points last night. Shout out to Capel for his first win at Pitt (even if it was against a bad Youngstown St team).

Aside from Duke, obviously, the most impressive win was certainly NC St, which beat a fairly good Mt St. Mary's team by 50. Crazy thing about that game is that with just over 15 minutes left, it was a 9 point game, but State closed the game on a 54-14 run... ouch!

Syracuse's 32 point stomping of a fairly good Eastern Washington team was also impressive.

Jason, Mount St. Mary's was 324 in KenPom before last night. That's not fairly good.

Thank you. State's opponent was not fairly good.

A lot of different lineups tried last night. State has a lot of work to do to figure out what works and what doesn't. Clearly, when it's all working we can be very good. I don't know how many more gimmies we have to figure that out.

I think the “This Week in the ACC” threads are where I will miss Olympic Fan’s posts the most. I went back and re-read some of the threads from early last season, and Al’s posts were so insightful and informative. He certainly would have loved the game last night!

There were precious few tough games, but still worth noting that the ACC is undefeated thus far on the season. As you might imagine, no other conference can make that claim (MSU's loss to Kansas ruins things for the Big Ten while Providence falling to Wichita keeps the BEast from being unbeaten).

Nor is Mount St, Mary's Fairleigh Dickinson.
