There are some all-time greats that I like a lot like Maybelline, Roadhouse Blues, Radar Love, etc. It helps if the song is about driving but for me it’s most essential for a driving song to have some attitude and raw bluesy or rockabilly guitar. Dire Straits and Petty’s Damn the Torpedos in it’s entirety work well for me. Lately I’m partial to some Telecaster twang. My current Google Play driving playlist starts like this:

Ray Wylie Hubbard - Bad on Fords
https://youtu.be/QdZqxIHrunU

Chris Knight - Hammer Goin Down
https://youtu.be/OfwEpUrlQXw

William Topley- Uptown Baby
https://youtu.be/NFDR3zs8xBk

Robert Earl Keen - Amarillo Highway
https://youtu.be/jFd0m5nJ3Mc

The Ravyns- Raised on the Radio
https://youtu.be/jFd0m5nJ3Mc

Kelly Willis - Red Sunset
https://youtu.be/W8oCfG_ZiDs

Mozella - You Don’t Love Anyone ( yeah kind of an outlier I know)
https://youtu.be/e-GTKTmSWO8

The Derailers - There Goes the Bride
https://youtu.be/qhMenoEUSDE

Steve Earle - Hardcore Troubadour

Lucinda Williams - Can’t Let Go

Great topic, will respond in more detail later. Two of my faves off the top:

Running on Empty, Jackson Browns:
https://youtu.be/Vq25ZJwZJzU

Jet Airliner, Paul Pena (he wrote the song, even though he let Steve Miller record it first — Pena’s version is better IMO):
https://youtu.be/Cjr5U7g6aiA

(Would also post Truckin’ by the Grateful Dead, but would like to find a version friendly to those not predisposed towards the band. This one is short: https://youtu.be/qaQ8r-SwR2c )

Yeah me too. A friend of mine used to book those guys at the Music Farm in Charleston back in the 90s. I’ve had an opportunity to talk to them several times. Rick primarily plays a modified Sears and Roebuck guitar for his unique rockabilly/surf-rock hybrid sound.

Add Don Henley, "Boys of Summer."

Mahler's second symphony always revs me up.

Driving at night...Springsteen, Born to Run album

Hmm Born to Run has a pretty good rocker titled “Night”. BtR also has Thunder Road and, of course the song “Born to Run” which are both good driving songs. “Drive all Night” is on The River. It’s an 8 1/2 minute song
that’s a little dark and slow for by driving playlist. “Racing in the Streets” is on Darkness on the Edge of Town

I agree on “Boys of Summer” I hadn’t thought of that one but there is something about it that is suitable for highway driving. I’ll have take your word on the symphonies though.

“Boys of Summer” reminds me of “Driving” by Patty Griffin. Something about the guitar creates tension and sense of desperation or loss.

In my book, road songs, like Homeward Bound are a different category for another day. There are some intersections like , “6-days on the Road” and possibly “On the Road Again”

Restless Youthful Angst is another category that can intersect with both. I fear the connection between cars and restlessness my be lost on current and future generations though. Here’s a couple I like a lot:

Steve Earle - Someday (also a cool cover by Shawn Colvin on Cover Girl)

My playlists is heavy on Prince but otherwise pretty soul deficient. I’m sick of Little Red Corvette and 1999 but I never tire of When Doves Cry, KISS, Tambourine and Alphabet Street. I’d include Temptation and If I was your GF except for the over the top endings that are a little too Prince for my Drive playlist. My favorite Prince for driving is his best B side - “She’s Always in my hair”. I link a YouTube version but you can’t cuz Prince. I like the New Power Generation stuff a lot too. The musicianship was upped with those guys. Sexy MF and Get Off are a blast!!

I was tempted to include this as a guilty pleasure since I love to play this during my extremely annoying morning and evening commute. Ya see, some genius here in Richmond, VA decided it would be a good idea to merge I-95 and I-64 for six miles in the middle of the city. What a freakin daily disaster. This is what can happen when you try to engineer a highway system around a colonial city. It got my blood pressure up just thinking about it so I went with the concept of driving songs on the way to a beach vacation instead.

I've always associated bluegrass music with movement, and have listened to a lot of instrumentals when travelling. A particularly fine one is Foggy Mountain Breakdown. No one can do it better than the composer himself, Earl Scruggs. He was a true giant of American music, and here he performs with a little help from his friends:

That same genius was probably the same person who decided it would be a good idea to put 4 toll gates on I-95 in Richmond and Petersburg, where you had to throw a quarter or two into a basket. Certainly I-295 and I-195 help, but if you work downtown in the financial district there are few options for getting in and out. Richmond is divided into north and south by the James River which only exacerbates the situation. It is best to find a job in the surrounding counties and avoid downtown altogether. It can take 30-45 minutes to get home and only takes 12 minutes with no traffic. A single accident can make it and hour to and hour and a half. This city could really benefit from a mass transit upgrade. Back to the music.....(for some reason I have Zeppelin's Communication Breakdown in my head right now).

Bluegrass fans check out the Mark O’Conner Band first chance you get. Mark has been around since the 80’s playing in super-bands with David Grisman, Sam Bush and Tony Rice. This is mostly an O’Connel family band with his Wife Maggie, son Forest, Forest’s wife Kate. Kate rivals Allison Krause in her prime as a bluegrass singer. It’s a fiddle heavy band as Mark, Maggie and Kate are all fiddlers. Forest is and excellent mandolin player and the the base and guitarist are great too. Probably as tight a bluegrass band as you can find these days.

Has anybody mentioned "Willin' " by Little Feat?

Or "White Line Fever" by Merle Haggard?

The story I heard is that Lowell George wrote “Willin’l while he was in the Mother’s of Unvention, and brought the song to Zappa. Zappa said it’s great, but if you want to play that you better form your own band. So he did.

I’ve got “Think I’ll just stay here and Drink” by Merle on my drive list. What could be cooler than Merle on the Telecaster with some hot sax?? I’ve always thought the beauty of twang was being able to rhyme “drink” with “bank”.

Don’t have any Little Feat on my drive list but I’d pick Dixie Chicken over Willin’. The Commodore hotel is not in Memphis btw.

I’ll just take Waiting for Columbus end to end, and be happy when I get there.

Probably as tight a bluegrass band as you can find these days.O'Connor's Appalachian Christmas (https://www.amazon.com/Appalachian-Christmas-Mark-OConnor/dp/B0050VMJ3K) includes guest turns from Alison Krauss, Yo-Yo Ma and more. It's fantastic.

If you're a fan of fiddle music, you might want to pay a visit to Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia. The Scottish music of the 18th C. is beautifully preserved there and played there all the time. Natalie MacMaster (https://youtu.be/EB5mHI4WXn8) is one popular practitioner. And the scenery is unbelievably gorgeous.
