A really interesting article about the making of Karate Kid as told by those that made it.

I think the You-Tube Cobra-Kai series casts Larusso as the real villain in the original movie, using an illegal kick to the head to win the tournament, stealing Johnny's girlfriend.

The movie didn't create the karate wave of popularity, it rode on top of it. I studied Shorin-Ryu for a couple of semesters while at Duke in the 70s. Favors flexibility over power, I was a bit out of place.

I believe that argument first entered mainstream pop culture by way of Barney on How I Met Your Mother years ago (although references to Larusso being the villain may have cropped up elsewhere and I'm sure the argument had been made by fans in a less public setting long before that). Both actors actually had fairly significant guest roles in one (or more?) episodes. Kind of wonder if seeing them together on a major network TV show didn't help spark the idea for this Youtube series, especially given the "Larusso as villain" characterization.
