Thanks for the link! If correct, this would be a pretty tough schedule for Duke as we’d play the CHeats, UVA, and Syracuse twice each along with Wake. We wouldn’t play at NC State which would be nice, as that place has been a disaster for us. Also no homecoming for Capel, as we only play at Pitt. UVA and Duke should be at the top of the league (along with the CHeats), so it is fitting that we’d play you twice.

It seems odd that we have Syracuse twice again so soon (also in 2013-14 and 14-15). I thought they were going to rotate through and you would only have home-home with your non rivals twice in a rotation. Anyone know why?

Kind of like we had this past season.

It would be pretty rough for UVA if they had to play both Duke and UNC twice. None of the schools have to do that.

It's a little too early for the guarantee games. Those usually come from the local newspaper. We still have the ACC-B10 and Maui brackets to keep us interested, but the rest are guarantees in Cameron or Elon. We'll do a 8-5 or 7-6 split depending on where the ACC-B10 game is.

H: St. John's, Maui prelim? (1), TBD
A/N: Maui (3), v. UK - Indy, v. TX Tech -MSG

I think we got lucky to get Syracuse yet again over the other school that we're overdue for a home-home, Clemson. Zion was an added ratings bonus and crowd motivator.

Can it be considered “pulling a Bootsie” when you know in advance it’s coming? Because that guy is totally going off for 30+ in Cameron. If sports gambling is legal by then, I am putting serious money down on that happening.

Plus, generally, if a player went off on Duke the previous season, I tend to think the odds of them doing it again lowers the next season since we'll emphasize him even more in the gameplan. (It doesn't always work out that well, of course. I think Bonzi Colson had several big games on us).

1/24/1999 - Bootsy Thornton goes for 40 but Duke wins by 4 against St. John
2/26/2000 - Bootsy goes for 22 as Duke falls by 1 in Cameron

3/13/2015 - Bonzie Colson scores 17 as ND beats Duke in ACC Semis
1/16/2016 - Bonzie scores 31 (w/ 11 boards) as ND wins in Cameron
3/10/2016 - Bonzie gets 12 (w/ 12 boards) as ND wins again in ACC Tourney
1/30/2017 - Bonzie scores 17 (w/ 9 boards) in a loss to Duke in South Bend
3/11/2017 - Bonzie gets 29 and 9 as Duke wins the ACC title
3/8/2018 - Bonzie finishes his career against Duke (finally!!) with 18 and 9 in an ACC tourney loss to the Devils

Robert “Tractor” Traylor from Michigan had a couple “big” games against us. He got the better of Brand in their matchups. I still remember their win in Cameron (one of only two or three non-conference losses in Cameron over a 20-ish year span) where Traylor put the game away by dribbling right down the lane and dunking on us.

The game winning Traylor dunk was December, 1996. That play will forever be etched in my memory. Brand did not join the team until the following season.

IIRC, Michigan scored the final 10 points of the game to take that 1 point win. It was one of the most surprising losses I can recall for a Duke team in Cameron because we seemed to be in control the whole time.

12/9/1995 - Traylor 3 points, 5 rebounds as #2 Michigan beats #18 Duke by 4 in Ann Arbor
12/8/1996 - Traylor 15 points, 5 rebounds as #7 Michigan beats #10 Duke by 1 in Durham
12/13/1997 - Traylor 24 points, 13 rebounds as unranked Michigan beats #1 Duke by 8 in Ann Arbor

I have not checked, but I bet there are very few non-conference opponents who have won 3 in a row against Duke in the past 30 years.

Duke's schedule this year is going to be brutal.

Between the games against Kentucky, Auburn and/or Gonzaga in Maui, the road ACC games, and possibly one or two unexpected home losses and Duke could have 10 or more losses this season. If Duke finishes the season with 7 or fewer losses on the year, I expect a #1 seed in the NCAA Tournament.

The ACC schedule includes:
Home & Road matchups: UNC, Syracuse, Virginia, Wake Forest
Home: BC, Clemson, GA Tech, NC State
Road: Florida State, Louisville, Notre Dame, Pitt, VA Tech

No matter what style of play they employ, I would argue that whatever Princeton is doing on offense must be the Princeton offense ;)

But, I saw highlights of some of their games last year and they did not appear to be employing Pete Carrill's backdoor-you-to-death approach to playing the game.

We are not going to be the overall #1 with that schedule, but it's not anywhere as bad as it was two years ago. We should probably win 4-5 of those ACC road games and 8-9 of the ACC home games. KY and Gonzaga/AZ in Maui are the biggest challenges non-conference.

We have an extremely long break between TX Tech and the start of ACC season (1/5) like last year, which concerns me again. We need an easier opponent than FSU (Elite 8) after that layoff.

ESPN has been waiting until September to release the rest over the past couple years.

Interesting that we open with Clemson at home. The Zion revenge tour! I also tend to look for quick turnaround games: we have GT at home on a Saturday and then ND on the road on Monday. Also @UVA on Saturday then @Louisville on Tuesday. Similar road back to backs @Syracuse and @VT. State the week prior to the first CHeat game could be a trap game, but at least it's at home. I also noticed that we host both Syracuse and UVA in the same week fairly early, could be helpful to play two plodding, defensive teams in a row.

We already knew that our unbalanced schedule was tough this year. Two games against CHeats, Syracuse, and UVA (probably the three best teams) in addition to Wake. Road only trips to FSU, Louisville, ND, VT which are all historically tough places for us to play, plus Pitt which has its own drama.

Thanks for posting. Interesting that there are zero games on Sundays. And there seem to be a lot more "Time TBA" games which are very frustrating for those of us hoping to try to head to Durham for a game. Mighty TV wins again.

Also interesting that there are no games over Christmas break - they are off from the game in NYC on Dec. 20 until Clemson on Jan. 5.

I'm always interested in the Dec games spacing as Duke always takes off big chunks of time. This year there is the Princeton game between exam break and the NYC area game. Sometimes there isn't a game in between. Then two whole weeks off between Texas Tech and Clemson. If Duke loses to Texas Tech that DBR thread will just be endless.

Duke University promotes the NYC game every year, by hiring an arena (MSG this time) and giving a contract to an opponent. Therefore, it is a Duke home game.

In other words, Duke wised up a few years ago and quit paying the middleman.

^ last year we opened at Boston College, the players completely overlooked them and we came away with an embarrassing loss 8-(

I took my 8 year old nephew to this game - his first basketball game of any type. I wasn't expecting him to walk away from it a Ky Bowman fan.

It is a great schedule because this is going to be one entertaining team. Does anyone have a link they can share to populate our electronic calendars with the Duke men’s basketball schedule?

Young whippersnappers with your newfangled technology... every season I happily add the schedule to my digital calendar manually, one game at a time, like we used to do in the old days!

At the top of the Go Duke schedule page (http://www.goduke.com/SportSelect.dbml?&DB_OEM_ID=4200&SPID=1845&SPSID=22726) there is a blue button labeled Sync to Calendar.

I did it. The dates and opponents are right, but some of the details are incorrect (10 PM starts; "all-day" events), but I can correct these by hand. (I also learned that I have separate calendars for my two Google accounts.)

It looks like we play twice this year, first on January 19 at your place and then on February 9 at our place.

I like playing Duke twice--Bennett calls such games "truth serum"; they tell you the truth about who you are--and particularly on the weekend (both games are Saturday games). I can only surmise the scheduling powers set some value by these games.

What I don't like is playing Duke on February 9 in Charlottesville and then playing UNC on February 11 in Chapel Hill. If we played Duke in Durham on the 9th and UNC on the 11th, the team could just stay over, or if we played UNC on the 12th or 13th, there would be more recovery time.

That said, if you take the travel out of the mix, it has a tournament feel to it: playing two good teams on very short notice.

I'm looking forward to getting the season started and seeing what Mr. Williamson looks like on the playing floor. There sure is a lot of buzz about him.

Trust me, we don't like that either. UVa will be all jacked up for Duke on the 9th, and no way they stay that focused for UNC two days later. This is how Swofford makes subtle tweaks to the schedule to help his Cheats. Face it, they Cheat at every level. Very reasonable to expect UVa to hold serve against Duke at home and then lose at Carolina two days later...maximizing the Heel's reg season title chances at the expense of Duke and UVa...the other expected contenders.

Subtle Cheating, the cheats don't usually try to hide their cheating ways. They're proud of it. GoDuke!

Well, Swofford isn't "officially" on the Cheat payroll - but I've noticed this dynamic for years.....from my observation, many more teams play Carolina right after they play Duke....as opposed to the other way around.

Let’s try to think positive - maybe we’ll beat UVA in a close game and they’ll be so disappointed about the loss that they’ll take out their frustrations on the CHeats.

Two-day turnarounds with travel in between really seem unfair. I believe Duke does it twice this season. I know that the tournament has two-day turnarounds, but there is no travel involved.

Anyways, both games between Duke and UVA will be great. I think last year’s loss was a bit of a turning point for our team that set the zone defense plan in motion. And UVA’s defense is such a great test for any young team to face.

Are we sure he’s not a paid consultant? Couldn’t help but notice he never reprimanded the Cheats for decades of cheating, but has stepped into other school’s issues in the past. The ACC presidents and AD’s are cowards by not at least forcing Swofford to take a stand against the Cheats.

Well, it's hard to prove a negative, so I guess no, we're not sure. That said, two things stick out about Swofford and Duke:

A: That basketball scheduling glitch regarding common opponents with UNC is something that has bugged me for years....
B: He has done Duke a "solid" with regard to bowl assignments....

The above link tells a lot about Swofford - guess the FSU soccer “isssue” weighed heavy on his heart.

Given that he was the AD at UNC when the cheating occurred, I don’t think anyone was holding their breath waiting for him to punish himself.

That's what happened in 2015. UVA was beaten at home by Duke on a Saturday, then went on the road to beat UNC two days later on Monday. (http://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/team/schedule/_/id/258/year/2015)

Also, UVA losing to UNC might actually be more beneficial for Duke's regular season title chances, if recent history is any indication. Not that I'll be rooting for that outcome to occur... but UVA is a regular season monster in the ACC.

Did he become visually impaired?

Wiki reports he had a spinal tumor (no details), so for that I certainly have a great deal more sympathy. We'll always have his quote:

"In 2008, he was diagnosed with a spinal tumor and had to go into a one-year long therapy. After it proved to be successful, Okulaja played one more season for the Brose Baskets."
