Well, he's sorta back:

He's coaching pro football, but I've never heard of the Alliance of American Football.

... I've never heard of the Alliance of American Football.

I looked it up the other week but don't recall what I had seen in the news that spurred me to look it up. Experienced folks involved:

Alliance is a startup spring football league. Hines Ward, Troy Polumalu among other have a piece of the action. A disfunctional QB who flunked out with
Browns is playing

Damn!

I saw the headline and thought maybe he was coming back to Duke as offensive coordinator!

Well here's my thoughts on that....as both a Duke fan and a South Carolina fan (long story how that odd ball pairing happened) - I feel lucky to have had Spurrier at both my teams. That said, he peaked while at Duke...as OC, then HC...and the early years at Florida. All during that time he was ahead of the game on offense.

That was not the case at SC. Team was never very good on offense, not consistently. He was no longer ahead of the curve. The curve caught up...maybe even passed him.

I was always a Spurrier fan...I found his brashness refreshing and real. I remember thinking that Jim Grobe at WF is a great coach, but man is he a snoozer of a cliche factory in an interview. Most FB coaches are. Spurrier was real. But his best coaching was done at Duke. By far. I think it was harder for Duke to win an ACC title in the 80s than for Florida to win a Natty when he was there...though his Fun and Gun was still ahead of D coordinators for a while at Florida too.

The league is shutting down. Does that mean that Spurrier ends his career a champ?

Well that doesn't narrow it down very much.
