We talked about this in the South region thread but it got swallowed up by the amazing UMBC win, so I wanted to mention it again. UMBC did something I’ve never seen before as a way to milk the clock: when inbounding the ball they would just set the ball on the ground, and the player receiving the ball would stand there and not touch it. The game clock would continue to run, thus burning off time, but the shot clock doesn’t start until the player touches the ball and therefore they are not at risk of a ten second violation (I assume)

I’ve never seen a team do this before. I’ve seen Shane Battier wait for 4.5 seconds before inbounding the ball in situations where nobody was guarding the inbounds, which shaved a few seconds. But for the UMBC play, is there any limit to how much time they can burn? Can they set the ball in bounds and then just wait indefinitely until UVA comes out to make a play on the ball?
