He's taking shots at K again because of Zion...give us a break!

Nobody should be surprised. Cal wanted Zion, Barrett, and Reddish. K got all and has clearly surpassed Cal as the premier recruiter in college basketball. Cal has always been a sore loser, and we kinda knew that if this coup happened Cal would lose it. And UK fell completely out of top 25 this week.

If this coaching thing doesn't work out for him, at least Cal's got his swampland in Florida to retire to...

Cal ain't too bright highlighting the Duke approach ("We're preparing you for basketball and life beyond basketball.") and making it clear that he has some different approach.

I suspect the Duke coaching staff would be more than happy having Duke's attitude well and widely known among recruits and their parents.

Keep yapping, Cal.

The Brotherhood is branding at its best that should sustain beyond Coach K. Imagine the likes of perennial Dukies- in-the-NBA all stars taking an interest and looking out for you beyond basketball. That's networking beyond even the best B schools.

These kids can be set for life and is brilliant if the players continue the tradition and pay it forward.

In essence, Cal tells elite recruits that he will provide an experience that will maximize their likelihood to get an NBA contract, and, with that contract, enough money to take care of themselves and their relatives.

Coach Cal accuses Coach K of telling recruits that if they come to Duke that the university and the state will take care of them, which is--of course--ridiculous. If there were a Duke alum payout, my hunch is that it would be noteworthy. Instead, players (from both Kentucky and Duke) report that K underlines that there is more to life beyond basketball, and that--in addition to maximizing their likelihood of getting drafted, which is so obvious that it needn't be emphasized--that recruits will be able to use their Duke experience to develop themselves into men who can happily care for themselves and their loved ones, regardless of whether or not they hit the NBA lottery. Obviously, this message doesn't persuade everyone (and I have been quite impressed by many of the Kentucky recruits, who are often thoughtful and well spoken, and who would likely have done well at Duke--there are many ways to grow oneself into a man), but it's hard to really complain that it is unfair recruiting.

I don't know if K mentions it, but there are plenty of highly touted and hugely productive Duke players who never really made it in the NBA. Some from injury (Jay Williams, Hurley, Scheyer, perhaps Zoubs would fit in this category), and others who were great college players but who presumably didn't bank retirement money from playing basketball (Nolan Smith, Wojo, Nate, Collins, Bilas, etc etc etc) but who have had highly successful careers (in and out of basketball) partly because they actually got an education. It's almost embarrassing to recognize how many espn talking heads once wore a Duke uniform. It's not like a Duke alum is the Commissioner of the NBA, or the president of CBS Sports, or the president of the WNBA.

In Calipari’s defense, Kentucky is the state that he is working with so how much can he claim that the state can provide. 😃

What a big fail on Cal's part.
He is selling Duke better than we do ourselves lol.
His approach towards those kids is failing and he is only slowly realizing it and doesn't know how to handle or react to it and staying relevant.
Take a look at his recruiting success the last few years compared to when he started the OAD thing.
He's getting beat by coach K at his own game.

Cal's comments should be music to all our ears but also never forget that he is pandering to his base.

I love the comments because it shows Duke is under his skin in a big way.

As for the pandering, Big Blue Nation hates Duke with a passion. Anytime he takes direct shots at us, he scores with them. The "socialism" comment, I am sure, also lands in a very sweet spot for a majority of BBN. His comments about the combined salary of the Kentucky alums being a billion is his key selling point.

This is the first time in a long time I have heard him basically admit that we are beating them at recruiting. Up until this point, in every interview, all he says is, "When it's time to eat, we eat first."

If he had real balls, he'd say, "K is 70 years old and probably hanging them up in a year or two. He keeps missing time with injuries, illness and surgeries. If a kid wants to take a chance on an old man's health, good luck". When he enters that territory, you'll know he's truly desperate.

My guess is, this line is exactly what he tells recruits. Softer, of course.

But if you are a OAD, do you really care if K is retiring in four or five years? All you care about is whether he will be there next year, and I assume K gives each recruit and family his assurance that he will be there unless the Good Lord calls him home.

First off, I hope your timeline is accurate but I feel like 2020 is the finish line (hope I am wrong), but this is exactly why his embrace of one-and-dones makes so much sense. I was going to post this in the other thread about the one-and-dones, but we are basically in a scenario where, to quote K himself, "every season is a lifetime". K is going to hoard as much talent as he can and only worry about the year in front of him because his runway is short. To me, we are in the final K blaze of glory era and then comes the "who knows what happens for the rest of time era". Because I don't want to think about the next era, I am rolling strong with his approach to this era!!!

Also, K and staff can use his possible upcoming retirement as an advantage as well... only a few years left to get a chance to play for a living legend and become part of his brotherhood forever. Sounds pretty cool to me!

Can anyone fathom K saying something like this about another human being? And at the same time, it's very easy to imagine Cal saying this about K.

Cal, you sack-of-jawea. Not a speck of class in Cal's entire mess of flesh.

It seems to me that the most logical reason to go OAD is to cash in while you can. There's nothing worse than the serious injury that can end a player's career before it has even begun. Once a player has gotten the contract and banked the cash, doesn't it benefit him to consider what comes next?

I don't know if Duke provides counseling on hiring an agent, evaluating draft potential, and managing money or even if they're allowed to do so under NCAA rules but it certainly would be a great idea. In addition to that sort of thing I would imagine that a Duke recruit could count on K for "life-coaching", at which he appears to excel. I've seen numerous accounts of how former players rely on him for exactly that.

Finally I'd just point out that a Duke recruit, despite having only one year of a Duke education if he opts for OAD, would benefit from the same thing that all students do; an exposure to the vast opportunities that are available to those who apply themselves with diligence.

If Calipari isn't pitching something like that he should perhaps consider a bit of introspection.

I agree. And it's the best kind of branding: the kind that first develops organically as others notice and mention your attributes, as opposed to self-branding.
