I wanted to wait a bit before starting this thread to see what would transpire over the course of the season, but it looks like if Bagley continues to put up the #'s he's averaging, he will be joining some elite freshman company at Duke & maybe in the ACC (hopefully more of that to come later on during the season.)

I had to do some digging from thread's from a few year's back, as well as update list's in terms of freshamn point's and rebound's, but as of now (as long as what they have on the team's website includes his #'s from today's game against Wake) here is the list's of most points and rebounds recorded by freshman in Duke basketball history.

He has a way to go in both list's before getting into the top-10, but within the next month he could be there.

Points: (Duke)
Jabari Parker- 670
Jahlil Okafor – 657
Brandon Ingram - 624
Gene Banks - 581
Luol Deng - 558
Austin Rivers - 527
Johnny Dawkins - 506
JJ Redick- 495
Jason Williams - 492
Justice Winslow- 492
Jayson Tatum - 488
Tyus Jones - 461
Kyle Singler - 451
Luke Kennard - 425
Bagley - 353

Rebounds: (Duke)
Jahlil Okafor - 322
Jabari Parker-306
Gene Banks-292
Mike Gminski-289
Luol Deng-255
Justise Winslow-252
Brandon Ingram -244
Shane Battier-230
Danny Ferry-221
Kenny Dennard-215
Jayson Tatum-213
Carlos Boozer-213
Kyle Singler-198
Josh McRoberts-189
Bagley - 188

I know this may not be everyone's cup of tea, but I always like to chart things like this when we have a freshman that is putting up amazing number's.

*Note if anyone finds data of other players that I may have missed, or number's that are not on these list's please feel free to make changes.

and 1st in Fr. rebs when he left Duke. Jahlil came along after, and set a new record.

I guess it comes with the territory of being a OAD and getting bounced in the first round of the big dance.

I'm much (MUCH!) more impressed that Gene Banks was #1 in both for about 35 years.

Me too-- that is really quite impressive (as was Gene Banks).

Meanwhile, the front page article notes that today Bagley tied Parker's record for freshman double double games, at 14--so he is likely to pulverize that.

He also has a better than awful shot at breaking the Duke career dunks record. In one year.

Wait, nevermind. I misread. He has no chance at Plumlee’s career mark of 217. But he should obliterate Plumlee’s single-season mark of 87, and has a decent chance of making top-5 all-time at Duke even with the one year..

I'm seeing 195 total rebounds for Shelden's freshman year on https://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/players/shelden-williams-1.html

So he should appear ahead of McRoberts on the list but not top ten.

He didn't become The Landlord until his sophomore year. Freshman year he was just an RA.

Wow, makes his career totals even more impressive.

Same with Gminski, who graduated as the all-time scorer at Duke but apparently not in the top ten of freshman years. (?)

I think he has 414, so still ahead of Bagley. Am I wrong?

Boozers 443 points his freshman year should also have him listed. I suspect this list of leading scorers and rebounders may be missing a few folks along the way. Still, a good list to have and I bet it is more accurate at the top.

It really is shocking that with the season he's having, Bagley isn't the super runaway national freshman of the year, but there's no denying the year that Young is having (I see no point in arguing about who is better, both are having ludicrously good years).

So considering the Pitt game should and probably will be a blowout, Bagley probably won't move up the list until the Wake game, at which time he will be moving into the top ten in rebounds past Ferry, and past Kennard on the points list.

I mean he Could go off for 31 / 16 on Pitt, but my guess is he will be out of the game before them since Duke will have a 20+ point lead. It's hard to put up massive numbers in a blow out. He needs 60 / 31 to get to the next players beyond, which will probably take 3 games.

What would y'all put the over / under at for the number of HALVES he will need to break into the top ten in scoring. He needs 106 to do that. I would put it at 9.

If DeLaurier and Bolden are still out, Bagley will play a lot by default, so I could see him moving up a spot in the rebound rankings for example...

I know K's cone of silence trumps all, but i wonder how serious Bagley's shoulder injury is and if there is any concern about it. If it's not 100% and he has lingering pain or impingement in the range of motion of that shoulder, then i think he should sit out this game, particularly if both Bolden and DeLaurier are available, and even if they're not (or only one is).
I hope the shoulder is 100% already and that he continues to have a marvinlous season, but caution could be the better part of valor.

if it had been serious, i'm sure something would have escaped...that he was having a scan or whatever....given it popped back in on its own mostly, and he continue to play, I doubt there's much of an issue.....given kyrie continue to play too...but it was clear within a couple days that there was a major issue.

Wasn't there a "Johnson" who played backup center at Duke a few years ago? I recall he had to tape up his shoulder pretty heavily so it wouldn't pop out. And he even got used to it popping out and popping it back in. I may be mis-remembering...

Based on those numbers, if Bagley continues to score and rebound at his season averages, he will finish the regular season with 669 points and 355 rebounds.

Also worth mentioning Carter is on pace to finish the regular season with 445 points and 284 boards. Trent is on pace to finish with 455 points.

Anyone know where Duval stands on the freshmen assist chart?

I appreciate your efforts too, but you appear to be shortchanging Bagley. He had 432 points and 229 rebounds prior to his 30 and 14 today. So he is actually at 462 in points and 243 in rebounds.

So with his next rebound, Bagley will tie Ingram for 7th at 244. He is already 11th with 462 points, and 16 shy of Tatum for a top-10 spot.

With a 16 and 12 performance tomorrow, he will reach the top-10 in points (488) and top-5 in rebounds (255).

I think we should start listing Wendell Carter, Jr. in this thread as well. Hi current totals:

Points: 301
Rebounds: 198
Blocks: 43
Assists: 42

At his current scoring pace of 14.4 pts/game, he would end up with the following totals (some rounding):

19 more games: 575 - Make the ACC Tournament Final and National Championship game
18 more games: 560 - ACC Tournament Final and Final Four or ACC Tournament Semis and National Championship game
17 more games: 546 - ACC Tournament Final and Elite 8 or ACC Tournament Semis and Final Four
16 more games: 530 - ACC Tournament Final and Sweet 16 or ACC Tournament Semis and Elite 8
15 more games: 517

At his current scoring pace, Wendell is on target to end up in the Top 7 and as high as 5th all time.

At his current rebounding rate of 9.4 reb/game, he would end up with the following totals (some rounding):

19 more games: 377
18 more games: 367
17 more games: 358
16 more games: 348
15 more games: 339

It's pretty incredible that Wendell Carter, Jr. is on pace to break Jahlil Okafor's rank in total rebounds but may end up as #2 when all is said and done.

And he would probably be #1 in both points and rebounds (easily on the rebounds front) if not for Bagley. I think Carter is a better talent than Okafor, actually. Certainly more athletic, and appears to be getting to be better defensively too.

Another small nit, but Bagley is actually 30 points away from the top 10 and 26 from matching Tatum. Given his propensity for 30 point games (already having broken the ACC freshman record with 6) it's possible he sneaks into the top 10 vs. ND. I think it's more likely to happen against the Johnnies.

Another small nit, but Bagley is actually 30 points away from the top 10 and 26 from matching Tatum. Given his propensity for 30 point games (already having broken the ACC freshman record with 6) it's possible he sneaks into the top 10 vs. ND. I think it more likely to happen against the Johnnies.

Doh! You are of course correct.

Up to 474 points and 251 rebounds. The next game should hopefully put him in the top 10 in scoring and top 5 in rebounds.

Carter is up to 318 and 205.

And the scoring list. If Carter's averages hold then he would likely be #2 on the rebounds list behind Bagley and possibly in the top 5 in scoring.

The scoring will be tough. Or at least it will depend on a deep ACC and NCAA run. He needs 240 points to catch Deng. If we play 18 more games, that would require "only" a 13.3 ppg average. If we play 15 more games, he would have to average 16 ppg (which is above his current average).

With somewhere between 4 and 11 games left, What once seemed a lock for Bagley to set the freshman scoring record is now at least somewhat of a question mark. He's 143 points behind Parker.

4 games - 35.7 ppg
5 games - 28.6 ppg
6 games - 23.8 ppg
7 games - 20.4 ppg
8 games - 17.9 ppg
9 games - 15.9 ppg
10 games - 14.3 ppg
11 games - 13.0 ppg

You have to assume at a minimum — without even running the risk of jinxing the boys — you’ve got 6 games left (1 win in the ACCT and 1 win in the NCAAT). More than likely you’ve got at least 8, which makes 17.9 certainly a doable number.

Of course, after he drops 58 points on UNC, these numbers will get a little easier.

That, plus the 33 Grayson needs to reach 1900 (if my math is correct after the Syracuse game), should be enough to vanquish the cheats. ;)

Update after the Notre Dame ACCT game. Bagley should become the all-time freshman rebound leader tomorrow. It would be intersting to see where he sit's on the ACC list for freshman rebound leaders now.

I feel like McCants should have some sort of positive asterisk for calling out UNC for their cheating ways. Maybe he should be referred to as "ex-UNC".

I wouldn’t even say 5 more games is necessary, though I would certainly prefer 5 more. At his current pace, 4 would give him about a 50/50 shot. 5 more games would make him highly likely to get there.

Yes, 1990, at the McNichols Arena in Denver (seating capacity about 17,000). As it turns out, I was at the Marriott that was the HQ for Georgia Tech that year. I'd just walk through the lobby in my Duke gear saying, "I'm pulling for Tech." The Tcch fans were quite gracious and very excited to be at the Final Four. The Jackets gave UNLV a much better game than we did (although our win over Arkansas in the semis was pretty amazing).

The talent and level of play at that final four was off the charts especially when compared to today. Georgia Tech was incredibly impressive...

It’s unbelievable we will end up with 3 freshmen scoring in the top 10 in Duke (freshmen) history in the SAME year! I’m aware the times have changed to the one and done era, but Master K has always been bringing in top recruits. This HAS to go down as K’s best recruiting class to date! (I will follow all this up in a year and see where we are then)

But ponder this for a second ... where would Wendell Carters numbers be if Bags never committed? One would have to imagine his numbers would have already shattered the points AND rebounds record!!!

Ona side note, I kinda feel for Trent a little! This dude will end up dropping more points than Rivers did his freshmen year without even a quarter of the publicity!

I need to keep reminding myself to not take this year’s freshmen for granted!

On a second side note, could we add freshmen assists to this board? I’d have to think Tricky is pretty close to the top.

The incredible part about this all is MBIII missed 5 games this season (included Mich State). He would’ve obliterated these records if he stayed healthy. I think he is officially the best freshman in Duke basketball history. Truly remarkable feat for a HS Senior.

NOW ... like I stated above, if Bagley didn’t come, would we be claiming that Wendell is the best freshmen in Duke history? Don’t get me wrong, the one-two punch is AWESOME this year, but I really wish we could have seen Bagley and Carter separately. That would be a very good debate topic if we got them two a year apart! (Still, the edge goes to Mr Bags)

Wow, sour grapes much? Regardless of how today was disappointing, Bagley was one of the best athletes to ever wear Duke blue. If you don't recognize that, I am sad for you.

If you think OADs aren't engaged in Duke sports, looks at Carter in the bench, towel over head for the last few minutes.

Please don't diminish the accomplishments of these kids. They were epic.

Great individual accomplishments sure, we didn't accomplish much as a team though, didn't win the regular season, ACCT, or make a FF. It will go down as a pretty average season (for Duke) with very little legacy to speak of.

Epic? How so? What was the teams best accomplishment? Getting to the Elite 8 is certainly not a flop, but for the preseason #1 to not win the conference, go 1-2 vs. UNC, and not make the Final Four is not epic.

Sometimes I think that us Duke fans become spoiled or even entitled from year to year. Thinking that Duke is always going to win the ACC, ACCT, make to the Final Four and win it all every year because of past success, or because it's Duke.

29-8 isn't a bad season, many other top programs would love to have the season that Duke did. You wanna talk about not living up to expectations, go talk to the Virginia team about expectations.

Some fans need to realize that based on Duke's past success that it's just going to get harder and harder each year to accomplish ACC, ACCT, Final Four, and NCAAT Championships. Every team that plays Duke with the talent they bring in each year, is going to give Duke their best shot just so they can say they beat Duke.

Plus anything can happen in the NCAAT. There has been past preseason #1 Duke teams that were far more talented than this team, not make it to the Final Four or win an NCAA Championship.

I'm proud of this team this year and what they accomplished, I wish you would be realistic and realize that Duke has to go out and earn it each year just like everyone else does, and that championships and achievements aren't going to be handed to them because of what the program has accomplished in the past.

If you can do any better playing or coaching, then I look forward to seeing you on the team next year.

Simply suggesting that this season was not “epic.” Calling people spoiled fans because they make that reasonable conclusion is weak.

Nobody said it was a bad season, it was a nice season, but by Duke standards under Coach K it was decidely mediocre, and that's a standard that has been set by all the players who have come through here the past 38 years. We can't lower the standard for this year's team just because we want to say something nice about them.

For the record there have been 20 seasons in Coach K's career that Duke either went to the FF, won the ACC Regular Season, or the ACCT, or a combination of the three. So at best this team which didn't win any of the 3 would rank 21st out of 38.

Agree, but the 3 Freshman did achieve a lot as individuals while trying their best to achieve team goals. They fell short of those goals so yes as a team it was a good season, probably great season by most standards but judged against past Duke teams it falls only in the good category.

We should not be dismissive of the individual accomplishments because the team fell short of its goals nor because the 4 freshmen are wanted by the NBA right now. But I know many will anyway.

I am a 4 yr player guy. I love seeing 4 year Seniors, but I had to come to terms with the fact the money is big, and playing in the NBA is more important to the best players than leaving a legacy in college. That said, the freshmen this year all seemed all in on being Duke. They were crushed today. It was obvious how much they cared. At least it was to me anyway.

Do I remember Marshall Plumlee more than Jabari? Yes. Am I mad at Jabari for only staying one year? No.

I've always said the money is not the end all be all and were it me or my child, there would be 4 years in college, embracing every second of it, and then go make millions in the NBA. But I have to accept that others see it differently and that does not make it wrong.

I had a similar conversation with a parent just the other night at a baseball game at my high school alma mater. His son was our star player the last 4 seasons on teams that won 2 Eastern Region Titles, 1 State Championship and an agonizing loss in the 4th Rd of the playoffs his Freshman year. He had committed to a local D1 school as a freshman but he got drafted last June. He went Pro based largely upon the signing bonus. I was talking to his dad last week and I stated it sure would have been nice seeing him in college so we could watch him play there for 3 years. He said "Yeah I know, but he could have blown his arm out and ended up not drafted. It was not worth it to us to take that risk. He has enough money in the bank and invested now to have a great start at life if he doesn't make it to the show, and they will then pay for his college and he for certain will go". That's their son and his career/life. Who am I to tell him he should have went the other route?

We need to understand that until the NBA changes the rules, some of our freshmen will leave after one year every year. Like Zion next year. Only when they change the rule will we see good players stay 3 to 4 years. It is what it is. It isn't wrong or right, it's what's best for that individual and his family.

I agree 100% with what you said. None of what I say about the frustrations with OAD situation should be interpreted as anything against the individual players. They are great guys and I don't blame them for their choices. All choices have consequences, though, I don't think me as a fan should sugarcoat those consequences either. The 2018 team will not leave much of a legacy.

To be honest, I'll probably forget about these OAD freshmen very quickly. Bagley ... all time freshman ... blah blah blah ... zzz. Didn't move the Duke needle one little bit.

All were more memorable than many many 4 year guys. Even some that were more recent.

My response was to a poster suggesting that Bagley and Carter as players would be immediately forgotten. If it is true that fans don't recognize and remember their incredible play, then yes, we are a spoiled rotten fan base.
