From email

"Duke redshirt sophomore specialist Austin Parker has been dismissed from the Blue Devil football program following his suspension from the institution for violation of university academic policy.

Playing in 12 games this season, Parker made 17-of-21 field goal attempts and 33-of-35 point after touchdown tries to lead the Blue Devils in scoring with 84 total points. In addition, he punted 61 times for 2,565 yards and a 42.05 average with 10 boots downed inside the opponent 20 yard line against nine touchbacks. In the ACC, Parker currently ranks fourth in field goals per game (1.42), tied for ninth in scoring (7.00 points per game) and 10th in punting average."

Sad news and a blow to our bowl victory hope. Hopefully he'll work hard and be eligible by fall.

I do wonder what a Carolina player would have to do (or not do) to flunk out. Is it even possible?

You’re assuming it’s an eligibility issue. I’m reading this as he violated a policy. He is suspended from Duke. Am I reading the situation incorrectly?

To add, "dismissed" implies he will not return.

Well, that settles it. We’ll just have to score TD’s on every possession in the Quick Lane Bowl and convert for 2 points. It may look like showing off, but we’re left with no choice. ;)

Why does this never happen in Chapel Hill?

Well, he's no longer a student, so he is -- by definition -- ineligible. He was also dismissed from the football program, which I read as being a "statement," even though it is superfluous as an action.

Why does this never happen in Chapel Hill?

1. They never have eligibilty/cheating/academic fraud issues there. Never had, never will.

2. If there's a discipline issue, that player might miss a half game or an entire game AND not be allowed to choose the site for the next team meal.

So, there ya go. :mad::rolleyes:

Is there any requirements for a player to be eligible to participate in a bowl game? That is, can Duke add a new player to the roster between now and 12/26 and have him play? Or are they limited to players who were on the roster during the regular season?

If the former, then call the entire soccer team (men and women), club soccer team, IM Soccer teams, rugby team, and anyone else who might be able to kick a ball in to try out.

It does ... they call it "business as usual".

What does this mean for our bowl game? Who are our #2s for punting and field goals?

Do they have any game experience?

I'm fairly certain you can't add players in the post season. Also, we have 5 kickers and 2 kicker/punters other than Parker on the roster already:

11 Tim Skapek K 5-8 185 So. Dallas, Texas (St. Mark's School of Texas)
38 Jack Driggers K 5-11 170 Fr. Tallahassee, Fla. (Leon)
48 AJ Reed K 5-11 180 So. Prattville, Ala. (Prattville)
91 William Holmquist K 6-1 190 RSr. Dix Hills, N.Y. (Half Hallow West)
94 Collin Wareham K 5-9 175 Sr. McLean, Va. (St. Albans [Washington, D.C.])
37 Jackson Hubbard K/P 6-4 190 Fr. Dallas, Texas (Highland Park)
47 Will Kline K/P 6-1 190 Sr. Montclair, N.J. (Montclair)

Driggers does kickoffs and Kline has played before.

I believe that Holmquist got in and kicked a PAT our last game, or maybe the GT game. He played at Tufts before transferring as a grad student. Really great story, actually: http://www.newsobserver.com/sports/college/acc/duke/duke-now/article166392422.html

As has AJ Reed who was the Starter last year, though admittedly he struggled mightily and only made 3 FG all year.

You're right, late in the GT game (Senior day), I think after Daniel Jones long TD run.

It was indeed and Cut was very happy for him telling him he was now in the Duke record/stats book after his PAT. It is most certainly a great story.

I think I read from Adam Rowe from one of the links/tweets that Boehme (you know, the "other" Parker :o) would be the punter and Holmquist would be the FG/PAT guy. Driggers has done a very good job this year on the KO.

No.

The next time it happens will be the first.

Not good news for sure. Hopefully, Austin Parker will learn from his mistake. I feel for the young man.

I'm more concerned about punting than kicking. As you say, Driggers is good on kick-offs and there are others on the roster who can kick extra points/field goals. If we are backed up, someone needs to be able to punt it down the field.

I think Holmquist can do an adequate job on FGs. While Parker was a good 17 for 21 this year, Cut didn't seem to have much confidence in his range, as he attempted only two kicks
from 40 yards on out. Having watched Holmquist in practice (I know, but still) I think he certainly has that range, and quite a bit of experience.

As for punting, who knows? Parker's average was pretty good, but too many of his kicks lacked optimal height...maybe we can move the ball enough to obviate this need?

Just throw long on 3rd and long and hope it's intercepted.

And the quick kick would bring me back to the Goldsmith years.
