I figure that we will need this at some point this year, so I might as well start it now.

The Expansion Draft was held today for four teams. Andre Dawkins was picked fourth overall by the Clippers with their first round pick. That does not necessarily mean that he will play in Ontario this season, but they hold his rights for the next two years unless they trade them.

The Agua Caliente Clippers... I love the name. The Agua Caliente are a tribe located in Riverside california... they own the Agua Caliente casino in Palm springs. Hopefully Andre can use this as a launch pad to finally make a name for himself in the NBA. Some of his D-league shooting performances over the past few seasons have been awe inspiring. The 3rd best 3 point stroke since I began watching Duke basketball (1. Redick 2. Langdon).

Why is there both a Jordan and a Jordon Crawford? Also, I thought Jimmer was playing in China?

Jordan Crawford has never met a shot he doesn't like. Jordon Crawford is just a generally solid basketball player.

Jimmer will play in China again. The draft was just for returning player rights, so his will expire soon. About half of the players drafted have already signed somewhere and are not free agents.

There are a few preseason games during the abbreviated training camps.

Amile made his Iowa debut on Sunday and had 13 points in 28 minutes in a 107-104 loss.

Matt made his Reno debut with 2 points in 18 minutes in a 107-91 loss on Monday. Quinn was on the other side and had 19 points and 8 assists in 23 minutes. Michael Gbinije is also on Santa Cruz and had 7 points in 17 minutes.

There was plenty of Duke involvement in Ontario's first ever game as they won 94-93. Andre had 15 points in 27 minutes and Marshall had 3 points and 15 rebounds in 28 minutes. Taylor King has a reasonable shot at making their final roster too and had 5 points in 13 minutes.

The regular season will start on Friday and the games will mainly be broadcast on Facebook again.

Relatively speaking, that is.

Yes, because it's more like the minor leagues in Baseball. This is the first year every NBA team has a G League team. Like a real "farm system."

The two way contracts are new as well.

Taylor paid a few bucks to participate in their open tryout and got the training camp invite and now they have enough open roster spots to keep him and everyone else that is still on the team. There are always some cool open tryout stories.

We are not quite at the 30 team mark yet with 26 teams this year and 2 more publicly announced. I think it is a still a wait and see approach with the new branding and other changes. People who follow the league closely were not happy that there was zero movement on salaries for the non two-way players. The stigma of the league within the game has largely dissipated over time. Hopefully the changes help remove that stigma in the mind of fans too. We could approach a time where half of the players in the NBA itself have experience at this level.

Thanks for clarifying. Well, if the NCAA stays on its current course, a farm system could be a valid alternative to a dishonest college system. I prefer college, of course, but should be fair to the players.

It was the first day of the new season. Quinn had his usual game with 27 points and 7 assists in 30 minutes in a 131-98 Santa Cruz win over Ontario. Andre had 8 points in 24 minutes and Marshall had 5 points. The other players of potential interest have conveniently grouped themselves as Michael Gbinije had 21 points in 27 minutes and Taylor King had 4 points in 8 minutes.

It boggles my mind that g league salaries are so low. Such little incentive for players to ply there when they can earn so much more in Europe or China.

Luke got his first snap assignment to Grand Rapids today after Detroit's West Coast road trip. I will update that after Matt's game finishes.

It boggles my mind that g league salaries are so low. Such little incentive for players to ply there when they can earn so much more in Europe or China.

Most people who follow the league (including me) hoped that salaries would tick up slightly as part of the new CBA (50k-75k seems reasonable), but that did not end up being the case. For rookies, it's actually not a bad idea to start in the G League so that you can build your resume and adjust to the pro life. Heading overseas before you are ready can be problematic as you do not want to get a bad reputation early in your career. Some of the guys who toil year in and year out in the league without supplementing their pay in places that play in the summer like Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, or the Chinese second division do confuse me. If you go overseas and do not like it, that's one thing, but to willingly not try at all seems like leaving money on the table.

I, for one, am really impressed that Taylor King is attempting a basketball comeback at age 43. Never give up your dream!

Wait, I'm older than Taylor King and I'm not that old. No wonder his classmate Kyle Singler can't play!

Seriously though, Taylor has been barnstorming the globe and playing at some pretty low levels like the Mexican regional league. Now that he's married, considerations like where to live become more important.

Dang, I miss Luke's scoring savvy. He's such a throw-back...he looks like Jerry West or Rick Berry out there (or as much as I know their games from the random YouTube clip). He could be so dominant at the college level, just making guys look silly trying to stop him.

Not sure how well that will translate to the NBA, I worry. Come back, Luke!!!!... :p

Since the CBA is negotiated by NBA players and not those in the G league, they don't want to sacrifice their pay for G league players. Basically, G league players don't have a seat at the table...but I wholeheartedly agree with you, especially in light of the fact that current NBA salaries are astronomical so it wouldn't be that hard to pay the G league guys $20k more a year...but owners have other issues that they want to fight for more. Same issue with MLB farm system. Some of those guys get hardly anything and have to give tips and other things to equipment managers when they travel.

Nah SVG just doesn't like rookies.

When they have Luke ~18 mins he scored easily and helped spread the floor. His defense was surprisingly good as well

Still, you can argue that in JJ's case, VanGundy being tough on him early is a big part of why he has had a longer and more successful career than most expected. He could have had Adam Morrison's NBA career, but hasn't.

I'm not suggesting it's the only way but some guys need more game action rather than only practice. I can't stand when coaches base things off of practice because imo it is the most useless baseline of a players skill. Let them play in a game some even if it is short.

So, Quin is like the best player in the G-league. He's leading the league in scoring (26 ppg) while also putting up 6.7 apg and 4.1 rpg. It is almost a pity he is on a 2-way contract as it ties him to the Warriors and no other NBA team can sign him.

I keep seeing Taylor King listed and figure it must be a joke, it seems so long ago he was at Duke, he's got to be 40

He left Duke after the 2007-8 season, transferred to Villanova to play the 2009-10 season, and then played for Concordia in Canada 2010-11. He's played professionally in the National Basketball League of Canada (didn't know that existed), the British Basketball League and the Lithuanian Basketball League. Now the G League.

He's 29 and still chasing the dream. Not the typical path, but because he has a shot, I suppose he's got a shot.

Go Taylor!

That would be Concordia the NAIA school in California. He also played a season in Taiwan and spent some time in a Mexican regional league and touring the Middle East.

Honestly, while the G League is less pay than a lot of overseas leagues, it's still better (and far more reliable) than some of the leagues that he has actually played in, so being able to play close to home for a season could have its appeal even if the point is not the NBA.

Also he has lost out on a lot of money to stay stateside i know before the beginning of last year NBA season he turned down a 350,000$ contract to play over seas... get this man a official nba contract i know he's got the two way deal but i really think he would be a solid back up somewhere.

I feel he's proved his point in the D-league and should have his jersey retired.. lol seriously there's gotta be room for him on a big league club bench somewhere EVERY NIGHT he's proven himself. It's nots that simple. Once you sign a two way deal, you give up the right for any NBA team to sign you unlike full time G League players. AFAIK, for him to get a full NBA deal, he'd either need the Warriors to decide they want him for more than the allotted days from the two way and convert the contract, or trade/release him entirely (though I don't know the mechanics of trading a two way)

We need the GSW to get back to blowing teams out and having Curry sit out the 4th quarter of games....leaving the 4th quarter to be manned by NBA PG Quinn Cook!

Two way players can be traded freely without any salary cap or other issues. Teams just need to have one of their two slots open to add one. They are also fully unguaranteed with several of them already being waived this season (including a few before play began, meaning no pay).

"A pillar of D.C.’s music scene, the Go-Go subgenre was invented in the nation’s capital in the late 70’s by Chuck Brown & The Soul Searchers. The Young Senators, Black Heat, Trouble Funk, Rare Essence, Experience Unlimited and other impactful acts have helped make Go-Go a prevalent part of the region’s unique identity through multiple generations and an influential style that can be heard throughout several musical styles to this day. The team’s identity was conceptualized following a highly-successful Go-Go Night during the Wizards’ post-game concert series last season and in conjunction with local members of the Go-Go community earlier this year."

Golden State might need some depth. Curry looks like he might have sprained his ankle pretty badly tonight.

Definitely don't wish that on anyone, but that's why GS has Quinn on the back burner. Agree, I'd love to see him get an opportunity with this team and make an impact in some victories. There's gotta be a Chef Curry --> Quinn Cook culinary joke in there somewhere.

Yes, Cook will probably be brought over. But don't count on a ton of minutes. Livingston is rested due to his coming off of suspension, and he's played very well as the backup PG. Green, Iguodala and Durant can all play point forward. Cook's been a DNP-Coaches Decision in several games. He did play a few minutes, and played well, against the Bulls. But, well, it was the Bulls - GSW won by about 50... That all being said, it's his moment to shine. He's gotta take advantage of it with whatever minutes he gets. It would be best for him if GSW blows out the other team - Kerr tends to rest players and ride the bench, giving him more of the spotlight.

I suspect that Quinn will not officially be with Santa Cruz for a while except if there are reasonable clock timing reasons. He should be at 7 or 8 days on his 45 day clock right now based on team releases in the past. Practices and most travel days count towards his clock but they could try to save a day or two on a home stand by not having him officially with the team on certain days.

Michael Gbinije is also still unavailable to the team, but they did manage a win tonight without either of them.

Andre' last stint in Europe did not end particularly well. The departure was not on the best terms and could lead to issues with him going back overseas. He might also not have enjoyed the experience to the point that he would prefer not to go back. He is reaching the point where he will probably need to make a decision on returning overseas next season as the G League salary is as low as ever.

They may have eventually settled and resolved things, but Torino was pretty publicly mad at the time of his departure. They accused him of leaving without permission. Either way, if his only European experience resulted him leaving a team fighting a relegation battle in Italy (not the strongest league these days), it would definitely be a red flag in him trying to get one of the better paying European jobs. I am hoping that the Australian team that he practiced with briefly in the fall liked what they saw and that he could head there in the future if he wants.

Jabari's rehab has been kept under the radar for a while, but is now a topic of conversation after the Bucks had him practice with their G League team on Monday with plans to also have him there on Tuesday. It is unclear if he will play a game at any point ahead of his competitive return, which is still expected to be further in the future, but it is good to hear about him back on the court.

Lance can shoot outside and Amile doesn't, but there will always be a place for a guy who can convert Oboards or breakdowns on offense into a bucket. Amile has an amazing ability to use angles around the glass. He needs to get a little bit stronger to be able to be able to slide over to PF from time to time. His lack of a jumper is really killing his NBA potential, or the perception of NBA potential. He needs a chance to show that he does/doesn't have what it takes to make a positive impact for a team in the NBA. Rebounding is a skill that translates well between levels, and Amile was a good rebounder at Duke, he's a good rebounder in the G-league, and ought to be a good rebounder in the NBA if given a chance.

It also bears noting that in the a few of these highlight videos, Amile is shown hitting the occasional 15-20 ft jumper. They are clearly not his bread and butter, but he is showing more range than he ever did at Duke. No NBA 3 range yet, but the potential may be there.

It took Lance a couple of years to do anything significant in the NBA, so as long as Amile keeps expanding his range he'll keep himself in the discussion. He's so much better around the rim than Lance has ever been, that it seems like the 2 ought to cancel each other out. Anyway, i would be surprised if Amile doesn't make a roster this year at some point.

Wednesday marks the start of the G League showcase. This annual event is a big deal since it is all played in one location (Mississauga), which allows more people to scout the games in person. For a lot of NBA front offices, these are the only games that their decision makers will watch live. While not as big as some recent seasons with the Puerto Rican league in limbo and the Philippines not needing foreigners for quite a few more months, this is also an event that draws international scouts looking for midseason additions.

The nature of the event also makes it easier to televise so more games can be seen on outlets other than Facebook. Quinn will be on ESPNU at 12:00pm ET. The league just signed a deal with Eleven Sports, which is a channel that is carried by a number of providers in their sports packages. The company that runs it has international reach so the G League will be on TV in several other countries. The channel covers a mixture of domestic and international sports as I keep hoping to find one of Ryan Kelly's games from Spain chosen for broadcast (it is a good place to scout Luka Doncic). Marshall and possibly Andre can be seen there at 4:00pm ET. Amile will play at 8:30pm ET and his game will be broadcast on Twitch, which is also a new deal for the league.

I don't know whether it is better to sign a two-way contract or a 10 day contract at this point in the season, but somebody needs to give Amile a shot here. There's not much more you can ask him to do than what he has done this season.

There is a simple answer for this...

HE DOES NOT BELONG IN THE G-LEAGUE!! Dude is an NBA talent. I actually wish he was not on a 2-way deal with the Warriors because some other team would have picked him up for sure at this point if he was not tied to the best roster in the league.

I know it’s been explained before but what is the advantage of a two way contract for the players?

From an SB Nation article last summer:

The player’s pay comes on a tiered salary system, which can last one or two seasons. While in the G-League, the player will make $75,000. It’s a significant increase from the current pay structure for G-Leaguers, who cannot make more than $26,000 with a one-way G-League deal.
When in the NBA, a player with a two-way contract will accrue a day of service and make money consistent with an NBA rookie minimum, which is about $816,000 next season. If a player spends 45 days in the NBA, he could make around $204,000.
In total, a two-way player who spends the maximum amount of time in the NBA would make $279,000.

$75K to $279K is a lot better than $26K, the current G League max.

Is there an accounting of Quinn's 45 days? I'm curious how much more we might see him on the big stage this season.

There's no official count for all two-way players. The Warriors have been pretty good about including a tally every time he moves between teams and the last one had him at 18 days so he is basically not going to hit the max where they would need to make a decision on him. All days after the G League regular season are supposedly basically free for the NBA team so in a couple of months he can be with the big club through their regular season without them paying the bigger salary or counting any days. Apparently players that sign two-way contracts after the start of the season have a prorated maximum number of days based on when they signed so Amile and Marshall have fewer than 45 days before they hit their max.

The Warriors had led the game by as many as 16 points behind two-way guard Quinn Cook’s career-high 43 points, five shy of the franchise record.

So it wasn't likely the reason he didn't play (as at least Justin Patton played) but Amile, along with Patton and fellow two way player Anthony Brown were all recalled by the T-Wolves with Iowa off until after the all-star break. Before anyone gets too excited, this is likely for practice purposes only as recalling two way players does not increase the gameday roster size from what I can gather, so the Wolves would have to deactivate current NBA players just for these guys to even dress. Still notable for Amile though as I believe this is the first time he has been called up so he'll be paid at his NBA rate for the first time.

Given the break in the schedule, it's the right thing to do, especially since Amile might have had a shot at a 10 day deal somewhere had he not signed the two-way deal. There is no transactional issues with changing which 13 players dress on any given day. The Timberwolves have carried 14 all season with Justin Patton basically on full-time rehab. Even though he has dressed while healthy, Shabazz Muhammad has not been happy with his lack of playing time. It does seem like they will try to sign a 15th player, which would further block Amile's chances at getting into a game at some point.

First, thanks for awhom111 for the G League Updates. The 'Highlights' link above is just MP3's highlights from the game. There are 3 things that make it worth your time: 2 reverse dunks in traffic and I loved that many of the highlights started with MP3 setting a screen and being a team player.

There was some transaction news as the trade deadline just passed.

Ontario has declared that Andre will miss the rest of the season due to injury.

Windy City trade for the returning players rights to Nolan Smith from Maine in exchange for a 4th round pick. Neither has much value since Nolan's rights will expire soon and 4th round picks rarely make the roster. Maybe the GMs get a bonus for making trades?

The announcers were doing the math during the game. There's a reasonable chance that Quinn could be officially with the big club for the rest of the season as they need a spare guard and they only would need to have him away from the team for a few days to not hit the limit.

Matt now heads to the playoffs while the other teams are done. Obviously, Marshall and Quinn have been with the big clubs since they have had enough days to make it through the regular season. Hopefully the Timberwolves now take the chance to get Amile into a game before the end of their season.

Quinn finishes as the league's second leading scorer and has the first 50-40-90 season in league history. He was also fifth in assists.

Amile clinched the rebounding title.

Hopefully the Timberwolves now take the chance to get Amile into a game before the end of their season.

Unfortunately, this is a side effect of signing with a Tom Thibodeau team. He's notorious for riding his main guys into the ground. The team's first round pick, Justin Patton, has yet to appear in an NBA game, and with the Wolves involved in a very tight playoff race, I'm not sure I see Amile getting into a game barring a crazy blowout or the team being locked into a seed before the final game. FWIW, the star-tribune reported that they expect Jefferson to be recalled with the G-league season over, but he has been up before and hasn't played

Here is the other big news:
http://gleague.nba.com/news/nba-g-league-announces-player-salaries-2018-2019-season/

Salary tiers have been eliminated so I guess there's no salary cap anymore. The full season base pay is now $35,000. The league seems to be stepping up its PR efforts too.
