Not to be confused with the general NBA Summer Thread.

In preparation for this one, I read last year's thread. It would be nice to stay more on-topic this year...

Shockingly, the Knicks were actually the first team to make an announcement. Here are Marshall's teammates:
http://www.nba.com/knicks/knicks-participate-orlando-pro-summer-league-0

Rasheed will play with the Hornets after his season at their D League affiliate:

Games start Saturday.

I was looking at the roster and noticed that they think Malik Monk was born in 1988, making him 29 years old. No wonder he had such a good year for Kentucky, he was a man playing with boys.

I also noticed that there actually is someone born in 1988 on the Hornets roster. Kris Joseph of Syracuse. He graduated in 2012... he's kinda old for the Summer League.

Sadly (kind of), BuzzCity announced that Malik Monk sprained his ankle during pre-draft workouts and will miss summer league.

Here are the teammates that Luke and Michael Gbinije will have with the Pistons:

The Pacers have announced a player roster, but not all of their coaches so it is unclear if David McClure will be involved in any capacity:

The Magic only have one team this year as another defection from their league will allow for an even eight teams in the first summer league:

I feel like every fat UNC player gets a ring. Doesn't make me happy.

Is this what Kendall Marshall felt like when he tweeted that every Plumlee has a ring?

I watched the end of this game, when Ellenson took all the long-distance shots and OKC kept cutting into the lead until it was theirs.

There's been a request for my recaps, but I need an angle. I'm not that interested in Kennedy Meeks because he lost the weight -- so skinny you can't see his hand clearly out of bounds -- and stole Gonzaga's title.

I could try Tony Bradley once the Vegas Summer League starts, but honestly, I don't know enough about him to care. Is there an overrated non-UNC player I can cover? Someone Kaminsky-esque?

The Summer League started in Orlando with the Hornets beating the Heat 74-67. Rasheed Sulaimon, fresh off signing with Dijon in France, had 4 points in 20 minutes. Johnny O'Bryant and Jake Odum were the first players to collect 7 fouls this year.
http://www.nba.com/games/20170701/CHAMIA#/boxscore

The Pacers beat the Magic 85-74 in a game with no Duke players and no excessive fouling.
http://www.nba.com/games/20170701/ORLIND#/boxscore

Marshall had 8 points and 6 rebounds in 26 minutes in an 80-75 Knicks loss to the Mavericks. Chasson Randle managed to hit the 7 foul mark.
http://www.nba.com/games/20170701/NYKDAL#/boxscore

Luke had 16 points in 30 minutes in his debut as the Pistons lost to the Thunder 92-91. Michael Gbinije had 7 points in 30 minutes.

The Magic then beat the Heat 81-68.

Rasheed Sulaimon had 8 points in 23 minutes as the Hornets lost to the Pacers 84-77.

Here is Monday's schedule (times EDT, games live on both NBATV and ESPN3):
Knicks (Marshall) vs Thunder, 1pm
Magic vs Mavericks, 3pm
Pacers vs Heat, 5pm
Celtics (Jayson) vs Sixers, 7pm

The Sixers roster is a veritable whos-who of highly touted prospects who went to Kentucky and saw their NBA dreams die. While Cal and the media love to talk about how he has a NBA pipeline there in the Bluegrass state, the reality is that he has had his fair share of misses too. The Sixers roster includes Alex Poythress, Aaron Harrison, and Isaiah Briscoe (who seemed less than delighted at how his Kentucky career went when asked about it (https://www.seccountry.com/kentucky/kentucky-nba-draft-combine-isaiah-briscoe-annoyed-2017)at the NBA combine a couple months ago).

Over rated... honestly, he looked too comfortable out there. I was also very impressed by Fultz. This draft might have been shallow in terms of franchise level talent but it might have more starter/rotation level talent than expected. Kennard and Tatum are on another level offensively when compared to their teammates.

Marshall had 6 points in 21 minutes in a 99-87 loss. The key is that he limited himself to 6 fouls.

To me, the lesson in Calipari's system is that you should go when the time is right instead of believing that you can improve your draft stock because he already has your replacement in the wings whether you stay or go. Briscoe figured it out a year too late when he could have been in the D League or even drafted and given the opportunity to improve the skills he needed sooner. I think the Harrisons would both have been better off leaving after their freshmen years and learning the hard lessons early rather than staying another year and helping their egos, but not their draft stocks. The Harrisons are actually right at around the same career earnings so I think both still have the opportunity to outshine the other.

Ok basketball experts. Since Rasheed has signed to Dijon France why is he still playing for the Hornets Summer League team?

Reasons from Rasheed's perspective:
-He may have a clause in his contract that would allow him to terminate it if he got an NBA deal.
-He still gets the chance to impress NBA and overseas scouts for future deals.
-He would be playing basketball regardless, either doing individual or group workouts or playing in a local Pro-Am or The Basketball Tournament, and this is still the best place to play right now.

Reasons from Dijon's perspective:
-Rasheed needs to stay in shape before he joins the team.
-Rasheed gets high level competition before their preseason.

Reasons from Charlotte's perspective:
-They still want to scout him for the future.
-They still need backups to swallow some of the minutes off the bench.
-He played in Greensboro last season, so he probably knows their system better than other people on the team, which makes him valuable in teaching the other players and also likely knowing what he's doing most of the time on the court.

Wait... what?!?! Sudden death basketball? Like, first team that scores wins the game?

Team USA had a scrimmage in 2010 that ended with a sudden-death alley-oop in overtime (http://archive.usab.com/mens/national/2010_world_basketball_festival_2010_08_12.html).

The teams were well balanced, so well balanced that at the end of ‘regulation,’ the score was tied 47-all.

So, since the rest of the night was hoops with a twist, the extra period also contained a little something extra. Coach K decided that the game should end in a sudden death.

USA Blue won the tip and the ball found its way to Rondo, who moved the ball up the court. The first Blue shot was off the mark, but Chandler leapt up and tipped the ball back out to Rondo. He returned the favor several seconds later with a pin-point accurate, alley-oop pass to Chandler for the ‘golden basket’ and his only bucket of the game.

Interesting to note, team USA Blue that night had Durant, Curry, and Iguodala. Imagine how unfair it would be for a regular team to have that level of talent!

Tomorrow night is the "No Hard Feelings, Right?" Classic: Jazz vs. Celtics. Tokoto Time! If ever there were a time to unleash a wing player that will make Utahns forget about Gordon Hayward, this is it.

The Cocks played solid D all year. They played tough against Duke and deserved the win. Duke played with fire throughout the ACC Tournament with big comeback after big comeback. Against SC they scored enough but just couldn't get the stops they needed to win. That Duke team was just beginning to reach its potential despite minimal contribution from Giles and Bolden but they were vulnerable and just got beat. A couple of foul calls here or there doesn't change the outcome. Thornwell was a very good college ball player. We'll see if he can find a Malcom Brogan type niche in he pros.

Watching the Celts/Lakers game and they showed all the coaches watching. Thibs was talking to Nolan Smith, which was noted by PJ as he announced. Nolan was wearing a Duke jersey...I'm guessing he's networking and trying to work his way up in the world?? I know this happens in a big way at the final four (all the assistants are there hob-knobbing), so makes sense that summer league could be a good venue for this as well, even for a very junior college asst like Nolan.

Sure, that should always be part of it for any young person trying to make it in a new career. But, they also just know each other from USA Basketball training camps in Las Vegas; among the Duke assistants, only Capel went overseas for the actual games, but all of them participated in the Vegas training camp, where Thibs, of course, was also present as a USA assistant.

Tatum does not look afraid out there and is demanding the ball in critical moments. Not sure who is better but Tatum is going to get minutes on a very good team. Fultz will start - most likely- on a promising team so he may have some more opportunities to improve faster.

Other than Brown's first game where he dominated the ball, his offense has been pretty poor. He had an aggressive series against LeBron that lead people to think he's going to be special. He was a controversial #3 pick in one of the worst drafts ever. His absolute ceiling is a less good Avery Bradley.

Yep, but was just more surprised that he's at the Vegas summer league versus being back home while the team is practicing. Seems a bit out of place that's he's there in general given he's a low level assistant at Duke (not even an official assistant), so the NBA seems a bit out of reach for him right now from a coaching perspective. Moreover, all the new guys arrived on campus recently and are starting their light summer workouts.

Not totally unusual to see him there, but a bit surprised.

Quinn Cook had 25/5/5 today vs Ryan Kelly (8pts) as the Pelicans lost to the Hawks in a tight one. Quinn was the leader on the floor and looked like he belonged. Frank was in street clothes for NO, presumably recovering from that surgery still?

Quinn has looked good so far and looks like a solid backup PG. Can someone remind of his contract situation? He looks like he should stick somewhere regardless, but can't remember if this year with NOP is guaranteed yet--IIRC it's not guaranteed at this point and he still has to get through training camp...

Assuming Basketball Insiders has correct information, it is partially guaranteed. If he cut anytime between now and July 25th, he is only owed $25,000. That amount increases to $100,000 at that point. Once he makes the regular season roster, he would be paid normally and if he were to be cut between when he earned $100,000 and the date when all contracts guarantee in January, then they would owe him no further money.

It's going to be interesting to see what the Celtics do with Ojeleye. He has looked pretty good during Summer League, but it's hard to see how he has much opportunity in Boston. They could keep him in the d-league this season and see how the roster shakes out next year or they could try to trade him for a future 2nd round pick. I think that there would be several teams interested in Ojeleye.

With Frank Jackson not playing this summer while he recovers from surgery, it seems almost certain that he will start the season in the d-league. The Pelicans actually love the d-league as both Cheick Diallo and Quinn Cook spent significant time down there. Diallo and Cook have looked really good in Summer League and both should see real minutes for the Pelicans this season.

Quinn's been a warrior to get to this point and have a legit career in the NBA. It's hard to get too excited about summer league results, but no denying Quinn put up good numbers. In one game though, i think the last one, NOLA got spanked, Quinn put up great numbers personally, but led everyone with a -28 +/- while the opposing PG had good numbers. It's not a good idea to read too much into one player's +/-, but that really jumped out at me, indicating either terrible defense by Quinn or terrible defense/chemistry by the Pelicans while Quinn was leading the squad.
Hopefully Frank's development this year takes place primarily in the D-league so that Quinn can solidify his grip on a long career in the NBA. It does seem to me that Frank and Quinn overlap a lot, although Quinn appears to fit more as a PG with shades of "lead guard" while Frank appears more "lead guard" with shades of PG. Frank's taller, stronger, jumpier and more athletic overall. Quinn is a better shooter, passer, experienced and crafty. One wants players with both qualities on their teams, but if NOLA sticks with Jrue Holliday, and Moore, there's not a lot of options for them to keep or play both Quinn and Frank.

I am not an expert but I think that Frank is also a very good shooter. I would not put one above the other. Quinn is definitely craftier and a better point guard. Will frank every get tô Quinn's level being PG is the question.

The Celtic situation is interesting because of the amount of stash that they have from the 2016 draft. You would figure that they need to take care of a player like Abdel Nader since they asked him to play for only $25,000 last year in the D League when he would be worth a reasonable amount on the international market (being Egyptian would mean that he would count under different foreign players limits in some leagues). Semi is probably the priority among second round picks from this year, but it could be interesting if some of the players threaten to sign the minimum offer (1 year unguaranteed). Teams may use two way contracts to try to keep second round picks that they would previously try to stash happy because $275,000 is obviously a lot more than $25,000.

The Pelicans are actually an interesting G League case because the addition of teams to the league this year and the addition of two way contracts may reduce the number of teams willing to help them out by taking on a player like Frank. This is where having a good relationship with other front offices helps. Assuming Frank is healthy by training and that they do not bring in more guards (Reggie Jackson being a rumor), I would expect him to have some role to play to start the season. The G League actually starts far enough after the NBA season that they should have plenty of time to evaluate him. I do not see him as being as much of a project as Diallo was and they had a glut of bigs even if they were afflicted by the general Pelicans injury bug.

Lonzo ball's game will quickly resonate louder than his dad's big mouth. He is so much fun to watch; definitely has showtime flare but his play is built upon a team first foundation. Casual fans are going to be drawn to him in droves... 36pts 11asts 8rebounds... I know it's just summer league but his style of play wold captivate anyone. I love how he consistently attacks the rim. This draft class appears to be extraordinarily talented... we will see how they develop in the long run.

He has a great size & quickness combination and should be a triple threat (pts, reb, ast) for a long time to come. The question is whether he'll be able to shoot when the real games come, especially given that quirky shot.

If he can't shoot that well his floor would look to be like a better version of Ricky Rubio, which isn't bad for a floor.

Because of his vision and ability to anticipate, he has quickness to spare in the open court. In the halfcourt, if he can shoot at a respectable rate( 12+ of 36 from deep as opposed to 7 of 36), defenders will have to play him more closely. This should make it somewhat easier for him to get around people. He also might be intentionally moving his feet more slowly in the halfcourt offense so we can all get a good look at his shoe choice for the night... once he settles on a brand, he'll kick it into a higher gear.

Harry has already signed with the Kings. He probably has approximately $4 million guaranteed over the first 2 years with a team option of $6.6 million over the final 2 years. I am guessing that at some point over the Kings' next 164 regular season games, they are going to have Giles go full throttle.

It will be interesting to see where some of the guys not under contract end up after this summer league. Presumably Amile and Matt have received some feedback on whether teams have any training camp/G League interest. Unfortunately, neither got a lot of time on the court to showcase themselves to international scouts, but their reputations and college footage should help them in that regard. Marshall also has some decisions to make, although I think he might be content with starting in the G League this season and also figuring out where the Army fits in with basketball. Interestingly, there are cases of people serving in the Army in Germany and simultaneously playing in the local league there.
