Matty will get Defensive Player of the Year. Obviously. And mainly because there isn't another option (Jefferson was really good. But Matt was on another level).

I hope Matt cleans up on all defensive and leadership awards. He deserves it.

Actually the Men's Basketball Banquet is tomorrow night. You made me nervous (which is not hard to do) I had to double check because my husband and I are going.

I can't really think why Sean wouldn't attend since he is graduating from Duke this year and transferring as a grad student. Chase might be a different story, but he seemed to get on well with his teammates, so unless there is some bad blood with the coaches, I suspect he will go as well. No inside info, though, just speculating.

Apparently so. They've been doing it for years. Buying a suit can be difficult and expensive if you're extremely tall. Remember, some of the players come from poor families. It seems reasonable to me to allow schools to buy them suits to use for occasions like this.

My gut reaction is that they rent but given your good point about how hard it is to find suits for very tall men, they might have to buy as it would be tough to track down several matching rentals for 6-8 guys. I'm sure this was thoroughly vetted by compliance and the NCAA wasted their time dealing with this question rather than UNC.

Any feedback on the senior speeches? Do they still do the video tributes set to a thematic song?

The suits are also used for the annual poster. There may be other occasions where players need suits.

They're still doing the individual and team videos. They were great, as always.

I wish they would televise the BB banquet on the Blue Devil Network for those who can't make it in person. I think they would have an audience.

BTW, the catering was a problem this year. It look a LONG time to get the entrees out and they were quite cold by the time they got to my table. The salad (beets, endive and goat cheese) wasn't too popular and the dessert (dried out sponge cake with something even more dried out between the layers) was only borderline edible.

The part in Amile's speech where he talks about the influence of Mason is really telling. That is what experienced leadership brings to the team. Great speech, great kid, great mentor.

Sobering thought: it is very possible that Jefferson, Jones, and Allen are the last three 4+ year regulars under Coach K. With the recruiting landscape changing, it is hard to see another guy in the next class or two being good enough to be in the regular rotation immediately yet not good enough to go pro early. And it is hard to see Coach K coaching another 7 years (which is what would need to happen if nobody in the next two classes is a 4-year rotation player.

Regardless, I can certainly understand the emotions Coach K holds for those guys.

People have been saying that the era of the 4-year player at Duke has been over for a long time. There will be more.

Pretty sure Vrank, Robinson (who likely may spend 5 years at Duke), Javin, O'Connell, and White will all be four year players.

I said 4-year rotation players. Vrankovic has yet to be in the regular rotation. Robinson is a walk-on who hasn't played but 10 minutes in his career.

I didn't say "ever again at Duke." I said "ever again under Coach K."

As I said, 4-year rotation players. White, Vrankovic, and Robinson already are eliminated from the possibility. O'Connell still has a chance, but is unlikely to make the rotation next year (especially if Jackson returns). If he is outside the rotation next year (as should probably be expected), he will thus not qualify.

Jefferson, Allen, and to a slightly lesser degree Jones were all part of the rotation as freshmen, yet stayed four (even five for Jefferson) years. In the era of one-and-dones and with Coach K's tight rotations, that is a rare thing. And given that we are almost certainly down to counting on our fingers the number of years left with Coach K, they might be the last ones to do so for him.

Yeah agree on the catering unfortunately. We were at table 28. We were seated at 6pm, and did not receive our meal until 7:30. It was funny when Coach K kicked off the awards presentation and told everyone to please keep on chewing and enjoying your meals, and at that point our table and several around us had not received our food yet. Not a huge deal to us to be honest, but it was kind of strange. Yeah some of the meat could have been cooked longer and while it wasn't hot, it wasn't cold either. Call it inbetween. I had a piece that was cooked medium well and it was quite tasty. The potato's stole the show for me though. They were outstanding!.

Also, big shout out to the players. They went to the dressing room to change clothes after the banquet ended, and then most of them came back out and very patiently and politely signed autographs and took pictures. My daughter got a lot of pics and selfies, and autographs. I brought my mini 2015 National Title Basketball and Matt, Grayson, Amile, Pags, and Justise all signed it. Justise is one of the best dudes honestly I have ever met when it comes to players. He happily took pics with my daughter and lots of other people and stood there with me for a good 5 to 10 minutes just chit chatting and talking hoops. Just like any other "normal dude'. That was one of the highlights of the night for me. I admit he is by far one of my favorite players but still, he had no issue talking to people, signing, pics, the whole deal. Super impressive.

Shout out also to Chase. I spoke with him for several minutes. very nice young man. Shy but was easy to talk with. I asked him if he had decided on a school yet and he said he was down to UCLA and Cal. I wished him well, told him I would be pulling for him in any game not against Duke and that to me he is a Dukie for life. He was very appreciative.

The Sr speeches and videos were great as was the team video at the end. This was my first time sitting down on the floor for the meal, and it was worth every penny. If you have never been, you owe it to yourself to at least grab one of the $15 seats upstairs and attending one. Just a really fun event and you get a chance to speak to the guys a few minutes after it ends and a lot of people leave.

already looking forward to next year's banquet and Grayson's Sr Speech as a Two Time National Champion :)
